Four days to departure and six to commencing the trek! I can't sleep at night! Wake up in the middle of my dreams! and, dream I do, every night the past week! I never had so many dream nights! Wow! And not all dreams are about the mountains, some are about smaller peaks and valleys, if you know me, you also know what I mean :-P Others are about being chased by wild animals, others are … well … can't write about them here since my family reads it too :-P This past Sunday I run the 'Route du Vin' half-marathon along the most beautiful track I have ever run on - 10 km along and the retrace same path along the Moselle river, amids the vineyards and cheering locals. I was taking it ease, watching no ... read more

Last night was the test drive of the 65+15 liter backpack (it's huge!). I loaded 17 kg of junk (inlcuding a few bokks) and went for a one hour walk. First on the flat road along the Moselle river and then up the steep hills amongst the vineyards. The backpack felt great. It sits on the waist and barely feels to touch the shoulders, it pulls them back a bit, only enough to support the pack vertically. It should be fine to carry it for longer periods! 180 euros well spent!... read more

Learning from the experiences of my esteemed fellow travelers, I have decided to sign up early to the TravelBlog site and get a feel for it from the comfort of my couch, before I am forced to stare at some medieval monitor in the sticks and type on a crunchy/sticky keyboard in a dimly lit cyber café :) There are many interesting features in this site for which there will be no time to learn them on the road, so here I go, begin my travels a whole 10 days ahead of schedule. I also look at it that I extend my vacation by the same ten days. Though not sure how it works, because my whole life seems to be a one long vacation. If one thinks of work as means to live, and I ... read more

We kept postponing this short trip, but finally decided to make it today; and with all the rerouting we had to do, due to road construction, we were on our way in the early afternoon to Luxembourg. Maybe because it’s the city, and just not knowing the sights to see, it felt like being in Strasbourg, but this time, it was another country. We stopped by the Gare, which is smaller than Strasbourg’s, where I bought some magazines in French and German and some postcards to mail home to family and friends; and then went walking around the city. They speak French too, but this time I had problems ordering food because I have been learning German and I have to remember to say ‘oui’, instead of ‘ya’ - which yeah, won’t make a difference to ... read more

Ahh Luxembourg. A tiny little country sitting between Germany, Belgium and France. Until 2005, I didn’t even know it existed! Chris has been to Luxembourg for work loads of times and for awhile there, it looked like there was a chance Luxembourg was going to be home for us instead of London. Thank god for that change of plans! Not that Luxembourg is a bad place, not at all! Just not really a place I could see either of us living. During our short visit we managed to explore some of Luxembourg city. It was much, much bigger than I expected. From Chris’s past descriptions, I was expecting tumbleweeds blowing down the deserted high street! The old town fortifications were really pretty and the residential area down in the valley was as nice as any European ... read more

DAY 127 I take the 8:30 train from Brussels. My travel is only 3 hours this morning and I reach my destination at 11:30. Luxembourg is officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and has a population of under half a million people. Luxembourg is a parliamentary representative democracy with a constitutional monarch; it is ruled by a Grand Duke. It is the world's only remaining sovereign Grand Duchy. The country has a highly developed economy, with the highest Gross Domestic Product per capita in the world. Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union, NATO, OECD, the United Nations, Benelux, and the Western European Union, reflecting the political consensus in favor of economic, political, and military integration. The city of Luxembourg is the largest city, and the seat of several institutions and agencies of the ... read more

Hello, this entry covers the week and a half I spent in Luxembourg. If you think it is a tiny place that takes an hour to drive through, my advice is to try walking it! From Burg Reuland in Belgium, I walked along the valley through forest before climbing a hill to give me my first view of Luxembourg. From there, I decended to the pretty village of Ouren for lunch, the final stop before entering the Grand Duchy. There was only one shop in the whole village, selling a full range of fishing gear and then only a few basic items as an after thought. Picking up the river Our, I crossed the trois frontiers, where Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany come together and followed the riverside walk for 4 hours, meeting only one other person. ... read more

Here are few pics for those who have followed us the last few weeks. We are in Luxembourg, the city and country where I grew up before moving to Asia 14 years ago. The opportunity for me to show Ma'ri a very nice "little jewel" under the sun. Tiffany and Leslie are enjoying there time with there grand-parents...it's barbecue, garden, swimming pool time. You won't have all these pics, but there are full of smiles and love! It's also for us the opportunity to see a lot of friends, here and around. We are back on the road to Belgium and all over Europe in the next few hours. But first, let's get back to my hometown. Luxembourg seems to move at the same speed as the growth of the European Union. I was born there ... read more
