I went to Akropolis, the mega-mall here in Kaunas, to see the film ‘La Vie En Rose’, a film about Edith Piaf, the famous French singer from the early 20th century. I went to the film with Jolanta, my girlfriend’s sister. And it was on our ride home that Jolanta told me the story of the last moose in Kaunas…… Not so long ago there were many deer and moose that lived in the forest across the highway on the outskirts of Kaunas. Viktorija and Jolanta grew up on Asygilys Street, a street that parallels highway A1, the main highway in Lithuania going from Vilnius (the capital) through Kaunas, to Klaipeda on the Baltic Coast. On one side of this highway is Kaunas—high-rise apartments, trolleybuses, taxis, concrete sidewalks and parking lots—and on the other side of ... read more

For the past two months I have been working at a summer camp called Mercurijaus, which is in a small village about 15 kilometers northwest of Kaunas. I have been working as a ‘sporto vadovas,’ or, (sports) camp counselor, teaching baseball to a group of around 20 kids for two hours each day. The camp is smaller than summer camps I have been to the US……it is situated in the woods on about 10 acres of land……but each week it attracts anywhere from 300-400 campers. As many things I have experienced in Lithuania, this summer camp is just like summer camp in the US, and also nothing like it at all. As you walk through the camp you feel the same energy of children running around, many of them playing sports or doing crafts, playing games, ... read more

Arrived early morning in Vilnius, the captial city of Lithuania and booked into the Old Town Hostel, just outside the city walls. To enter the town you must walk through the gate of dawn and past the St Theresas church where there was often mass crowds out in the street preying below it. Again the city had beautiful old buildings with plenty of character around. Spent the first couple of days exploring the city which included multiple churches from the Dominican church to St Paul and Peter Cathedral. Walked around the old Jewish ghettos and around the town hall, to the cathedrial square and up to the castle and museums. On the third day in lithuania I took train out to Trakai and after a beautiful but hot walk past numerious lakes I came across the ... read more

I decided to go and check out the website for the Bois-Guillaume Woodchucks, the team with which I was playing towards the beginning of the season for two months. I had seen on the French website that they were falling in the standings, in fact I am not sure that they have won a game since I left France. So I just wanted to check in. The front page of their website was an account of a meeting team officials had had with the Mayor of Bois-Guillaume followed by an open letter explaining the bleak situation of baseball in Bois-Guillaume. Apparently the neighbors next to the baseball park filed an official complaint to the Mayor, that balls were flying into their yards and windows were being broken…that it was disturbance to the neighborhood. The mayor, for ... read more

Today we played a doubleheader against a University team from Vilnius. We were small in number—only Shaq, Kisa, Marijus, Draugas, Yagi, Gedas, and myself were playing from the first team. The team was filled out by Simas, a player for the second team, and Edgaris, who plays for the Senior League team. Nevertheless, we won 19-0 and 23-0. Both games were stopped after five innings because of the 10-run slaughter rule. In the second inning, Marijus Dargus, who is arguably our best pitcher and, before his knee injury and surgery, one of our best hitters, hit a shot to right field……one of the furthest balls I have seen hit in Lithuania. It was absolutely crushed. Marijus is just back from his injury and this is only the second weekend of games he has been hitting, and ... read more

So it has been a long time since I have written. This entry is simply to state the obvious, to say that I am still alive and well and here in Lithuania. For those of you who don't know, I was back home in NC for my grandpa's 90th birthday. While home I was interviewed by the News & Observer, a Raleigh newspaper, about my experiences in Lithuania. here is the link: http://www.chapelhillnews.com/sports/story/8934.html (just cut & paste into your web browser) I was also coming home to help with the estate sale, to sell all of the things left in our house from Pleasant Green Road (did you know we moved??). Here is one of our last pics at the house, 'welcoming home' the new family that would be moving in. More blogs are on their ... read more
