One day we made a trip to the city Šiauliai in northern Lithuania. Outside this city is one of Lithuania's most remarkable places, the Hill of Crosses. This is a place we have wished to visit for several years and finally we now had the time to do it. In the countryside a few kilometers outside Šiauliai is a a place called the Domantai Hill, though it is known better as the Hill of Crosses. There are actually two hills there and they are practically covered with crosses. Nobody really knows when people started to place crosses on this hill. It is well established that the locals have used the place for worship and as a memorial for their loved ones for over 150 years. Wikipedia states that it is believed that this unusual way of ... read more

So I am now in Lithuania and there is so much to say. So much to say. I am staying here in a student Dormitory, on the first floor were stays all of the foreign exchange students and visiting professors for the University, 'Kauno Kolegija'. I have my own room, with a shared kitchen and shower with one other room. When I arrived a Turkish couple, both professors, were staying in that room. They left this morning, so now the apartment is all to myself. As I was writing this blog, the ‘house mother’ came to my door to give me the list of house rules in English. In fact I did not know there was such a sheet of paper, and for the past three days I have been learning bit by bit the ... read more

We had four days off from work and decided to go on a trip to one of the lesser known neighbouring countries to Sweden, namely Lithuania. Lithuania is the southernmost of the three Baltic countries. Up until 1990 Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union. The formerly strong ties to Russia is something you can notice still today when you visit Lithuania. For instance the hotel we stayed in has furniture that looked like it came from a storage house in Novosibirsk, the supermarkets sell several different brands of Russian vodka but only rarely Western ones, in the restaurants you can buy Georgian (Georgia in Caucasus, not the US) mineral water but not Evian. Don't get me wrong. We absolutely love this. We both have a soft spot for Eastern Europe and the way things differ ... read more

Hello friends. We have been to Vilnius A couple of months ago dad took us to Tallinn in Estonia. We only stayed there for one day but we liked it very much. But now that we have seen a little bit of Tallinn we wanted to see more. But mum and dad refused to take us there again. They said that they have been there before and that there really isn't much more to see than the old town and we saw that when we were there with dad. We still tried our best to convince mum and dad to take us to Tallinn again but we soon realised that it was pointless. But we are not only cute little cuddly toys, we can be tricky too. We had a look at a map and ... read more

Unfortunately our stay in Vilnius wasn't long enough... We arrived from Riga on Monday afternoon after a long bus ride. We've decided to not plan our trip which meant that we hadn't booked a hostel before arriving in Vilnius - this caused a bit of frustration, but everything worked out in the end. Vilnius is a beautiful city. I loved the Old Town in Riga but I have to say that Vilnius' Old Town is even more gorgeous. Like the streets in Riga, the Old Town in Vilnius is made up of old cobblestone and I can't get enough of it! For you Europeans, you probably don't think cobblestone streets are that big of a deal, but when you come from a country as young as Canada, you really appreciate how much more charming a street ... read more

29 April 2007: We woke up early only to find all cafés in Palanga do not open on Sundays (or any day for that matter) until 10am. Odd for certain for a tourist town.... So, off to the Curonian Spit. After a 30 minute drive, we arrived in Klaipėda and took the car ferry over to the peninsula. The peninsula is 97km long, but only 52 of them are in Lithuania (the southernmost portion being Kalingrad and Russian). The Lithuanian maps uniformly do not show the remainder of the spit below the border south of Nida. The four principal Lithuanian towns on the spit (Nida, Preila, Pervalka and Joudkrantė) all united in the 1960s into “Neringa,” and the spit was named a UNESCO world heritage site for its “cultural landscape” in 2000. At Joudkrantė, we ... read more

28 April 2007: Siauliai to Palanga. The drive to the Baltic Coast was a combination of newly constructed two lane highway and under construction road, so it took probably twice as long as needed but the arrival in Palanga made it all worth while. We walked the main Palanga promenade to lunch in very blustery but sunny weather. The fishing pier at the end of the promenade sticks about a quarter mile out into the Baltic, but few people other than the fishermen made it all the way out. The beach sand is probably the finest (smallest grains) I’ve ever felt. If I were in the business of making hour glasses, I would definitely want to use Palanga sand. We strolled through the Palanga Botanical Gardens which runs for 1.5 km along the beach front. ... read more

Leaving Vilnius; Siaulai Europe » Lithuania » Siauliai By carnellesApril 27th 2007Eric 27 April 2007: On the way out of Vilnius we visited the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in the 17th century and decorated by two Italians with over 2,000 reliefs on the interior. The details were fantastic. Driving along the A2, we stopped at the Burbiskio Botanical Gardens where the tulips were 3+ weeks behind the Skaggit Valley in blooming. And we saw storks nesting along the way. The Hill of Crosses, literally thousands of them, is a national moument it seems. In Siauliai, we passed by the new basketball arena under construction with a glass exterior that... read more

26 April 2007. Started out the day walking around Vilnius on some of the other main boulevards we missed on Wednesday. The morning light on Cathedral Square was auspicious and lasted throughout the day. I was intrigued by St. Helena atop the cathedral and can’t recall many other cathedrals topped with a female figure other than perhaps Mary herself. Now to figure out what St. Helena’s claim to fame was…. We had a coffee on Gedimino prospecktas across from the National Drama Theatre with its dramatic sculpture of the three muses overlooking the theatre entrance. We also stopped at a cool record (and some compact discs) jazz and classical music shop called Thelonious (www.thelonious.lt). The basement door was locked, but the owner quickly opened it and was clearly excited to tell us about his favorite ... read more

25 April 2007. Arrived in Vilnius almost 24 hours on the dot from getting up to leave from Seattle, mostly on account of a 5 hour layover in Frankfurt and delay on our flight due to “a suspicious liquid in the cargo hold left over from the previous flight, which arrived from Lisbon, that the fire brigade had to inspect wearing HazMat suits, which turned out to be antifreeze.” That account thanks to the LH captain; surabundance of information…. It begs the question though: who needs antifreeze in Lisbon or when its 80˚F+ in FRA? We’re staying at a 3rd floor apartment in the center of Vilnius Old town on Traku Street. Headed out at 1500 for a walking tour of the city in fantastic weather; warm and sunny sky with plenty of contrasts. Walked ... read more
