Hotel: Radisson SAS Riga +Trakai +Siauliai We got off to a slow start out of Vilnius this morning. We almost missed breakfast after sleeping in until nearly 10:00. The restaurant had tiled images on the walls of stylized Soviet workers. There was a basket of beautifully decorated Easter eggs sitting at the bar. The breakfast at the Scandic was Ok and had the basics of fruit, sausages, and Lithuanian pancakes (blynai or blintzes). We had planned to rent a car today and drive up to Riga via the Lithuanian towns of Trakai and Siauliai. I had made a reservation with Alamo but when we arrived back at the airport, not only was there no Alamo booth, but all the other car rental places were closed as well! Today (Easter Monday) was a holiday in Lithuania and ... read more

I'm staying with Santiago's wife's sister and her family here in Kaunas. Renata and her father, Sigmund (sp) were so nice and they picked me up from the bus station last night, at 4am. 4 AM! I felt so guilty... but I couldn't help it, that was the only bus that was available. I'm going to be making them dinner in a little bit. Oh the pressure! They fed me this morning a yummy beet soup with kefir and eggs. And tea and bread. I gave them the contraband mushrooms from Taiwan and they asked me to cook it. So here I am, in the hot seat again! ;-p They took me this afternoon to see the churches around here. I saw 3 or 4? They're not so ornate or ostentatiouis on the outside but all ... read more

So far we have had two concerts in Lithuania. They were both sponsored by the same church. One was in thier city and the other was at a school in a neighboring town. At the first concert one of the dancers hurt her foot right before the concert. We all prayed for her and she was able to dance for half of the concert but the next day found out she tore a tendon in her foot and can't dance for 3 weeks. So be praying for her. There were also even more obnoxious mockers but that is just a sign to us that there are definately unbelievers in the audience which is what we have been praying for. And God is so good because 80 people sought salvation. Then the next day at the school ... read more

And now the change of plans….I don’t know if I’d mentioned that I was planning to go directly to Moscow from the Ukraine or not, but that was the original plan. However, as I was sitting in Lviv and considering my options, I realized that about anything was a better option than a 33 hour train ride from Lviv to Moscow. Now if you look at a map, you’ll realize that Lviv is incredibly close to Poland; and if you travel north from Poland, it takes you to the Baltic states which then in effect connects to the Western-most part of Russia, namely St. Petersburg. Ah-ha, I think I have hit on something there. So to add a little spontaneity to my mundane traveling life (HA!), I decide to switch things up a little bit and ... read more

Country Count: 35+2! Rides: Parnu to Riga: One motorhome all the way to the centre of Riga. Riga to Vilnius: Two cars, one truck and a Lexus! Weather - Sun! We've had sun! At last! You meet strange people on the road. While we were standing on the road outside Parnu waving our "RIGA" sign at passing traffic, an older gentleman with long white hair came up to us, asked us where we were going, gave us a photocopy of an article about himself from a German newspaper, and then stood 15 metres behind us with a large "BERLIN" sign. We all ended up getting a lift in the same motorhome, and spent the next 2 or 3 hours discovering that we had the privelege of meeting Germany's most famous hitch hiker. He has been travelling ... read more

technically no longer in Vilnius but I figure that since i just got here in Warsaw that I would tell you about my time there. I would have to say that it's not as good as Riga, but only because the place I stayed wasn't as nice. I would still have to say that its a good time, though. Beer is really cheap and I had a filet mignon dinner with two beers and a dessert for like 12 dollars! Went to a small town about 30 min away called Trakai. Really great little town with a castle in the middle of a lake. The castle was kinda lame, the Russians destroyed it in the 17th century and then the soviets rebuilt it in the 60's, so not really an authentic castle. I guess that i'm ... read more

Vilnius, city of cobbled streets and numerous churches. Architecture from every influence; Gothic, Romantic, you name it it's here. Watch the world go by outside one of the delightful cafes in the old town. Gaze in amazement as impossibly tall thin women manage to negotiate the cobbled streets wearing impossibly tall thin heeled shoes (even in winter) I arrived here on a wet and cold evening, and found my apartment, which was tucked away in a typical old-town location, narrow cobbled street and tall building. I'd reccommend picking up a copy of the now essential In Your Pocket guide, at 5 litas. There are other guides given out free of charge along the same lines as In Your Pocket such as Exploring Vilnius, which can be found in hotel lobbies and tourist information centres. The whole ... read more

Bus rule number one If there exists one rule about travelling in buses besides rule number one which says that you always arrive later than expected, it is that you arrive too early that one time you definitely don't want to arrive early - as experienced in windy Vilnius. Our night bus from Warsaw which we happened to catch after a dramatic last minute run through town was all but leaving late. And there was nothing which could delay us. Traffic was running smoothly and the border crossing was a matter of minutes. So it happened that we arrived in Vilnius at 4 am already instead of the scheduled 6 am arrival. (We had a suspicion though that they had known it all along but didn't want to tell.) Late March mornings in Lithuania can be ... read more
