Here are some pictures of Klaipeda, Juodkrante, and Nida. A really beautiful place; I was surprised by how few people there were on the beaches, in the towns and villages, etc., but I guess the tourist season was coming to a close. I had written a longer more descriptive entry about these two places, but it somehow got erased. ... read more

9/21/06 So I have been meaning to write for a while and finally the time has come. And though I have a million things that I was going to write about, the following was not one of them Today I was reading Margot Schaal’s blog; for those of you who don’t know who this is, she is the mother of my friend Kaneza from Wesleyan, and she is right now living in Rwanda. Among other things, she is teaching yoga/feldenkreis classes for a UN group there (I think that is right). But in her short email to a group of friends she mentions very briefly a developing friendship between her and a guardian of a house near where she lives. The relationship began one day when the man offered Margot some food, knowing that she had ... read more

It was another magical week of baseball in Lithuania. I played in four games while I was there, part of a best of five series, we won 3 games to 1. The first game we lost; it was probably our most poorly played match all summer. I struck out in my first at bat, I wasn’t even close to touching the ball with the bat. Striking out is probably one of the most singled-out moments there are in sports. When you strike out, the strike three is called and there is a good sixty seconds before the next batter steps in to hit. And that whole time, there is little else for anyone else, and yourself, to talk about or think about than YOUR strikeout. I hate striking out. Probably the only think I hate more ... read more

Go to this link, http://www.baseball.paysfoyen.com, it is the Pineuilh baseball website (where I was coaching for a week). There are two funny pictures of me, and then an interview (in french) between myself and Jean-Marie, the Vice-President of the club, talking about the week and my reflections on their team/players, etc. (Hannah, you can translate it for mom/dad :) ).... read more

Jagshemash! It's hard to explain how important doing these journals are. They're very theraputic for me to clear my mind of important information that shouldn't be there anymore, as I need to take in my new surrounds. As I type this one up, well begin to, with my 30 mins free access at the Tornio library, it already feels like Im doing my job and informing everyone at home who cares to read, or had the time. So, after 6 months now, im still doing this thing for you and for myself and it's always been of great importance to find the time to get it all down. It takes longer for updates because I tend to type too much and not every place I go has USB access so I cannot upload photo's when I ... read more

The bus was actually on time, I couldn't believe it. I left Riga to the minute and was on my way to Šiauliai (Prenounced Shou-lay) in Lithuania. When we arrived at the border, we had to wait for 20 minutes while the passports were processed. This begun a theme for the day, waiting. Once at Šiauliai I headed to the Information Centre to find out ways to get to to my destination. I had to wait in line for 10 minutes while the only girl on the desk was finnished helping someone. She gave the details I was after and since I was only interested in doing a short trip I left my bag there. Another girl appeared and followed me around like a little dog begging for attention. She grasped a few sheets of paper ... read more

Arrive in the Vilius airport in the early evening. Lithuania is 1 hour ahead of Poland. So it is 5 PM in Warsaw, it is 6 PM in Vilnius. Flying from Warsaw to Vilnius with AirBaltic. There are no complimentary drink on board. Bottle water, snack (Springle), coffee, canned pepsi, tea, ...are sold for 5 litas (less than 2 dollars) on this short flight. The service is very basic ...to bring passengers from point A to point B. Exchanged some cash at the airport with official rate 2.7 litas/dollar and 2 litas commision. The bus ride to town (5-7 km away) is 1.1 litas but very infrequent. We missed the bus at 6:08 PM and the next bus is 7:25 PM. Not advise to get on a taxi at the airport. I talked to a backpacker ... read more

So I finally figured it out, why my host brothers' room smells so familiar. It smells like Adam! Yep, that sweet-smelling boy that many of you know, and that I got the privilege of smelling on a daily basis for two out of my four years in college. It was really getting on my nerves not being able to figure it out.... and it is actually kind of comforting getting a wiff of Adam Hetland. every time I walk through Mendaugas' (host brother) room. You smell great, Adam.... read more

So this evening I went on my first ever blind date. And by blind, I mean that I didn't even know I was on a date until I got into the car and it was only I and a girl I was meeting for the first time. Those of you who know me know that I’m an extremely positive person (most of the time), so I’m not going to say that is was not a worthwhile experience. But it was awkward, and I was a bit frustrated with my host mother for arranging such a meeting. So here’s the scenario. Usually after baseball practice the whole team goes to a local bar and has a beer or two, just relaxing and talking. But somehow I was unable to communicate this to my host mother because she ... read more

This has been a flurry of blogs, none of which have had much substance. But here is one of substance. Just an update of my plans. So this weekend are my final two games with the Kaunas Lituanica team, and then my pro ball career ends abrubtly (unless of course I return next year). But seriously, it is sad for it to be ending. It has been an incredible experience and I just appreciate so much getting to know the team, and the people who have taken care of me for the past month. On Monday I leave for Riga, Latvia, from there take a ferry to Stockholm, and then up into Sweden, through Finland, more boats, and down into St. Petersburg for a good old Russian time. The only plans we have for now is ... read more
