With our eyes firmly set on the coast we rode north from Warsaw with the hope of some beach bumming before heading into the depths of Siberia. On route we passed through Biebrza National Park, a large river delta area, and Poland’s largest national park. Our plans to take the scenic route through the park and spot the elusive black stork (czarny bochin) were foiled when the road we had intended to take was under flood. Nigel attempted to prove to me that it was in fact ride-able, and took his first tumble of the trip, which would have been very entertaining except for the fact that his precious video camera had been submerged, and Cycle Touring TV was nearly no more! A rapid first aid on the camera was performed when the bike had exited ... read more

Tired and cramped we arrived in Vilnius after the overnight bus journey. We made our way directly to our hostel where we went straight to bed for a few hours to recover. A few hours later and feeling better we set out to explore Vilnius. Neither of us knew much about Lithuania, I remember hearing about all the run ins they had with the USSR, when they tried to regain their independence, but I was quite young and didn't really understand what was going on. The city was certainly nice and good-looking, and boasted one of the largest old town centres in Europe. One thing we immediately noticed was the old town didn't seem particularly old. A great amount of work seemed to be under-way in order to (at least from what we could see), make ... read more

I last left off in Tallin Estonia. Tallin was great, it is a real carnivores delight. Everything is meat, meat and more mystery meat. Step outside the old town and you start to feel that everything isn't all that super. As our tour guide Lowry put it when asked "it is safe enough around here isn't it?" the answer was No. Despite breaking away from the Soviets in 1991, the Baltic states have been left with a bit of a social issue. Russians are a major portion of the population and a lot of them are still loyal to Russia and dont want to be part of the independent baltic states. So they pass their time by drinking lots of vodka and going around bashing people. Apparently they leave tourists alone in general though. In Latvia, ... read more

Geo: 54.6896, 25.2799This time we are on Ecolines bus for 4 hour trip to Vilnius and this bus has a tuck shop and the conductress is the waitress and they give you numbered luggage tags, very professional indeed. No customs dogs this time but saw tonnes more storks and they have many windfarms but no mountains. On arrival in Vilnius we walked to our hotel as C. had it all worked out this time and led us there as if it was his home town. Staying in Old town in The Radisson (all I can say is 5 star my ass but they had brekker til civilised time - 10:30am) but it was fine and in a great spot. The weather was now back to being gorgeous and the town is so much more 'catholic' looking (as ... read more

Early morning I wake up - around 5:30 - probably because of my less than pleasant sleeping position: as we put the tent up on a slight slope, my head is actually about 10cm lower than my feet, which didn't make for a great night's sleep. Then I realise: it's 6:30! Forgot about the time difference again, I really must change my clock forward. As Hans is up as well, we decide to just get up, pack away our stuff and flee the still mosquito-infested meadow. In the next town on the way, Eliskes, we stop to get some cake for breakfast which we then, along with the obligatory coffee, have for breakfast a little bit further down the road. The following 30km go by fast: a slight wind from the side, good road conditions, and ... read more

Day 11 of our journey, and the legs are starting to feel tired. A good thing that the road out of Druskininkai is absolutely perfect: sheltered from the wind, flat, and the sun is not too hot. On our way out of Druskininkai, we get lost once again (as we did on the way out of pretty much every single larger town). Two Lithuanian women, dressed up in their fancy car, offer to not only help us find the way, but drive with us to make sure we find it. Once they made sure we found the right junction, we have a little chat with them and they are quite interested in our journey (they speak perfect English). Once back on the way and well out of the town, we notice that (a) not every small ... read more

The last (half) day in Poland! Apparently, our tent was hidden well enough as nobody found us (or was bothered with us being where we were). As usual, we start the day off with some coffee, where I almost manage to set fire to the forest floor because I spill some cooking spirit. We get on our way towards Lithuania. As if someone was trying to keep us from reaching the border, the headwind picks up and makes cycling a real pain. Traffic is perfect though, not even the Nr. 16 route people warned me of manages to come up with much in the way of traffic. Generally, everything seems like it's asleep. It is Sunday morning after all, and we're in a pretty religious part of Europe. On the other side: Lithuania. A new country ... read more

Catching taxis in Vilnius is not as easy as it sounds.... First of all, you can't hail them down: they will not stop to pick you up. Why? I don't know. Second, it costs more (perhaps even double) to catch a taxi before 8 or 9am and after 10pm....Maybe they just see the tourist dollars. I asked a local boy what the story was, and this is what he told me: " The best way to catch a taxi is to call for it. It is cheaper. If you get into a taxi in the street, they will charge you more. And they won't stop to pick you up" It doesn't make any sense. But there you are. You just need to stand next to a vacant taxi, call their number from your handy mobile, and ... read more

Another old town, and to be honest by now we’re a little old town fatigued. Sort of like travelling in Asia and grimacing at the thought of seeing another temple, or Tibet and visiting yet another monastery - we’re just hankering for something different. So to be honest we didn’t spend too much time lingering around here. Instead our Lithuanian hosts Danielius and Grazina took us out to the countryside for a taste of something a little different. We took a day trip out to nearby Kernave which is the site of manmade hillforts that date from the Bronze Age until the end of the 14th Century. The Kernave Hillforts are pretty mind boggling due to the fact that the hills were literally manmade. Large quantities of soil were reallocated to form hills; a place of ... read more

Eateries are a plenty in Vilnius. My favourite was a little tea house that i think was part of a chain of tea houses, but the atmosphere and the food were fantastic. And the prices were reasonable as well. I think it was called "Skonis ir kvapas" on Traku Street. We ate there twice because the place felt genuine, and though the menu was also written in English, as are a lot of menus in Vilnius, it didn't feel like it was catering to the tourist. Indeed, i think on both occasions we were the only foreigners there. The entrees were light; the choice wasn't big, but then again, the food was fresh. They had European cuisine; entre autre, they had russian cabbage pie, dumplings, and pasta as well as a variety of fish. Simon had ... read more
