Our complementary motorboat takes you to St Mark's Square, the Doges' Palace and Bridge of Sighs. See glass and lace-making demonstrations, wander the fascinating canal side-streets and why not treat yourself to a gondola ride. Amazing day in Venice, absolutely loved it. Got up at 6.45, still drunk. Had breakfast of cereal, yoghurt, and omlette thing with bacon, and juice that tasted off (or like cheese and bacon balls according to em). Caught the 8.30 scarfie into town, which took about half an hour. Dave and Nat M spent the trip chucking up off the back of the boat, and thus began Dave's tour of the garbage bins of Venice. Venice is such a cool place, it was built on 117 islands in a virtual swap by banging in huge tree stumps for foundations, then ... read more

A city built on water well, not really, it was built on little islands, but... whatever. anyways, it was nice. the first day was great, and the second day it got muggy and rained. eh, oh well. it was still nice when it rained. i kind of liked it. we took a boat ride, not a gondala though... it seems that only tourists ride gondolas... and it's like way expensive too. our boat was like a big waterbus. it was cool. the pictures i took at night, i took alone, walking around. it was cool. the streets were so skinny, and the buildings tall, and the feeling you get walking through them --even in florence and all that-- is interesting. "calles enganosas" i called them, "decieving streets." this because it was hard to tell weather a ... read more

After docking in Trieste, we drive to Verona, home to Juliet's balcony. LAter we make our way to our accomodation for the evening. Ate so much for breakfast on the ferry this morning - corn flakes, peaches, a croissant with cherry jam, a bolied egg, tea cake, ornage juice and tea - it's no wonder I'm putting on so much weight. Arrived at the port at about 9.30, which is 8.30 Italian time. Drove to Lake Garder (Lago di Garda) for lunch, which is a possible new Contiki stop. As the ferry now docks in Venice, and we can't check into the campsite until 6pm, they have to find stuff to do in the day as well as going to Verona, so it was our job to check it out. The town was really cool ... read more

Got up just before 9 so I could make it to breakfast, then went back to bed as there was nothing else to do. Got up at 12 and had a shower and stuff, then wandered to the bar to find people as the other girls were still sleeping. Found everyone just hanging around playing cards and reading and stuff. Chatted to Ange for about 2 hours, then read her Elle magazine when she went for a nap. Melissa, Nat and Brigitte got up at about 5, and we sat round the bar waiting for dinner time. Had spaghetti bolganaise for dinner at the self service restaurant, then went back to the bar (for something different). Had a Mythos beer, which isn't as nice as Amstel. Went to bed at 11, tired from doing nothing all ... read more

As if the italians need more time off, theres a train strike tomorrow so apparently most train service will be delayed. Right now im in a campsite about 30 mins outside of venice called Camping Fusina, its a nice break from hostels. Im actually traveling with someone I met in Cinque terre which was awesome. The first nice we got a few bottles of wine and just watched the sunset over the water. There was no crazy nightlife or anything so it was jsut pretty chill all the way around. Someone I met in florence and cinque terre recommended this campsite because its where all the contiki tours stop so theres quite a nightlife here. Theyre mostly aussies...shocker. But actually theyre pretty cool and its been a good time. Today I left venice for a town ... read more

Ciao readers, So, since the last blog entry, we've actually been pretty productive...some of the highlights: -Our two days in Rome were frenetic and jam-packed. We saw all the Rome-y things, walked for hours, and only treated ourselves to gelato once (a day, that is). Towards the end of our second day, we decided we wanted to see Old Pope's tomb...however, we were stopped after security found my swiss army knife (Liz, after: "What? He's already dead!"). So that was sorta disappointing, as was discovering at 10:30 p.m. that the Metro was closed for repairs. I would like to say that we instead walked back to the hostel, but that would be a lie...we took a cab. -Next day, we boarded a train for Florence. Twenty minutes into the ride, this sour-faced man trudged down the ... read more

These are photos from my last trip to Venice. I like taking unusual pictures of unusual places. So, you won't find Saint Marco's Square photos, nor a gondola's photo in this blog. Anyway, I took pictures of some tipical Venice alleys ("calli"). I hope you'd like it.... read more

It's been a very long day. The night train started off well until a fourth person joined us in the middle of the night, and continually woke me up by turning on lights and then with hideous snoring. The real kicker is that all the rest of the rooms in our cart were empty -- but all the doors locked. Adam stood around with me in the early A.M. and then we went back in to go to sleep -- he gave me his i-pod to listen too 3 It took awhile, but I fell back to sleep for a couple of hours. Our train arrived late to Munich, so we missed our train to Verona, but we caught one 2 hours later. We had a little compartment, and I slept for the first few hours, ... read more
