I thought I'd seen it all, until I came to Venice and found out that standard internet prices here are $12CAN per hour!!!! OK, no. That's not happening. I get 15minutes free at my hostel and that's it, so it will be a few days before you hear from me. Sorry! Plus my photos suck because it's really foggy here. Oh well. Bye for a while!... read more

The Winter City on Water Europe » Italy » Venice By BlueoceanJanuary 30th 2007 Like so many millions of travelers, I traveled to Venice for just 2 days after staying in Rome for a week. I actually got to see the city during winter time and I must say it was pretty cold. The atmosphere during winter is much calmer, there are not so many tourist and all the wealthy residents go back to a warmer place during winter. The cold frisky weather can really surprise oneself, because during winter it's close to freezing temp during night and it barley warms up during day time. If anyone has been there during summer they will say that this city is unrecognizable during summer time. I really enjoyed myself in the ca... read more

Venice is AMAZING. That's what I have to say about it. AMAZING. I want to go back considering I only had one full day there and our insane tour guide literally ran us all over town the entire day. She was walking so fast she was loosing members of our group left and right. When I asked her to slow down she nearly had a heart attack and went off on me telling me I didn't have to come along if I didn't want to. Then she'd take us somewhere, not tell us what we were looking at, and then proceed to talk to quietly for anyone to hear her. The only thing i could make out were random sizzling and hissing noises she'd make as I attempted to dodge her wild hand motions. I could ... read more

I will add more later. Internet cafe is costly. Enjoyed Venice a lot. It's a magical city and it hits you the moment you get out of the train station. I met lots of line people here, Sean from China, Stephanie from San Jose, CA, John and Teresa from Birmingham, UK. Lots of beautiful shops and wonderful places to get lost in the back alleys. Went over to Murano as well as seeing the Friari Church, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, San Marco Bascillica and the Pilazzio of the Doge.... read more

Ahhh Italy, what's not to love?!? We've been surviving on a healthy diet of pizza and pasta whilst touring one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Venice warmed us up ever so slightly by turning on the sunshine, and there wasnt a hint of flooding in St Marks square (a regular occurance we're told) so a good time was had by all.....apart from a minor mishap with a bidet. I promised you our 'classy' toilet stories, so here they are..... Mick thought he would test out the bidet in our hotel bathroom, only hindsight taught him that he should have tested the water temperature before placing his backside over the tap, nothing like a bit of a burnt flesh to start the day....hahaha, actually it wasnt that bad, he just scolded himself slightly, not ... read more

If Rome is a city for archaeologists, and Florence is for art, then Venice is a city for miracles. Gasping for breath above its eternally sinking bulk, Venice slowly slides beneath the waves of history. It is a city that defies nature: the city's 100+ islands were built on the silt left by a delta in the river. Massive, wooden pillars were sunk into the clay beneath to hold up the foundations of the city. You can imagine the damage 400 years of sea water will do to wood. To adjust to its aquatic structure, Venices' ambulances have rudders, the taxis cant drive in fog, and public transport is on an antique floating barge. The water is filthy and trash is collected by boat. "Disposables" such as vegetable matter and banana peels are thrown out ... read more

Geo: 45.3374, 12.1379Today I was dropped off at the train station and caught the train to Venice. My plan was to spend the day buying souvenirs to put into dad's suitcase, wander the streets, go into the basilica and see a museum. Got off the train at the end of the line- Venice and wandered around the streets. Came across a local market and today was the first time after many times that I have been here that I saw locals greeting each other- usually the place is full of tourists. Looked in many shops, made some purchases. A hour and a half later of arriving in the city I came to St Mark's Square. The line to go into the basilica was very short, 5 minutes later I was in there. I had forgotten how ... read more

We started our day by getting up at about 8am. I didn’t sleep very well during the night, and I was glad to have packed some light track pants and t-shirts, as the rooms have all been extremely hot so far. You see people rugged up to the eyeballs, and you can’t help but think they are soft. Perhaps it’s being used to the cooler weather in Melbourne! We were stoked at what the hotel had on offer for breakfast today. Toast, scrambled eggs, ham, cheese, cereal…we had some eggs and toast, and the staff made a pot of coffee and hot milk for Kel…he had about 3 or 4 coffees at breakfast this morning! We had 2 serves of eggs and toast because then we wouldn’t need lunch (hopefully) and also, breakfast was free! There ... read more

We ate breakfast in the hotel again this morning as we had to get going, and we had already gotten up a little late. We packed our stuff before we went to breakfast, went back up, called for our car to come back and we did a final inspection before going down and settling the bill. Getting out of Florence looked very scary, however, it was so much easier than getting out of Rome! We worked out that there is only really a speed limit of 100 around corners on the autostrade, but other than that, you can go as fast as your car will let you. At one point, Kel got to about 155km/hr and was put off, and was being a bit of a slow-poke at 130km/hr the rest of the way. Just outside ... read more
