A great surprise whilst in Umbria was the film festival im Montone with Terry Gilliam, last night we wnt to the beautiful restuarant on the piazza. we enjoyed the meal while awaiting the film festival of kids shorte to begin. The first film was the Fox and the chicadee from the Canadian director, second was a delightful short from Holland Mina, about a girl who wanted to be different from her constrictive society where everyone wears green. She is obsessed with Minnie mouse and loves to dress as her. Before the films began we enjoyed watching the outdoor set up of the screen, van from where the projector sat and the seating. Thankfully the rain held off but the fog did come in bringing the temperatures down a little colder than we expected. just before the ... read more

After an early start we left Sorrento via ferry, where they tried yo charge us again for the baggaes, i was told it was for the return trip. you must be careful they do try to swingle tourists. And we certainly look like them. Not the Griswalds but not far off! From the train we caught a taxi from yhe station to the car rental office. the queue was so long so after over an hour wait we were hot and bothered. Finally we got the paperwork to go and oick up the car another hundred metres down the road. So now in the new car whose controls are like an airship we set off in our Ford Kuga which obviously isn't quite the euro car brand, but certainly spacious and safe. And it needs to be ... read more

Assisi- it was the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in the town in 1208, and St. Clare (Chiara d'Offreducci), the founder of the Poor Sisters, which later became the Order of Poor Clares after her death. The 19th-century Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows was also born in Assisi. Perugia - was one of the main Etruscan cities. The city is also known as the universities town. Perugia is a well-known cultural and artistic centre of Italy.... read more

Hi! We’re currently just outside Ravenna in a dead posh campsite; its been a while since we stayed in a proper campsite that has things like showers and toilets and we needed one because we haven’t done any washing for over three weeks! We ran out of underwear a week or so ago and ended up washing clothes (as well as ourselves) in the trusty bucket. If I was writing hitch-hikers guide to Europe (as apposed to the galaxy) it would be a bucket not a towel that was my number 1 accessory and it has served us well. We just stopped at the first campsite we came across and its lovely, has a posh (and open) pool bar, restaurant, shop, fruit n veg market thing, clean showers with hot running water; I’m in heaven! It ... read more

As the title may suggest to you we were to be reminded that even at our venerable age (Gretchen is almost there) we can still learn valuable lessons on the road. More of that later. We woke in Teramo to a partly cloudy morning which looked substantially better than the thunderstorm and rain from last night. The road sweeper was out keeping the streets cleaned which we are finding is more obvious now we are further north in Italy. Shame that the towns in the southern part of the country haven’t invested into these machines. Breakfast was good and the coffee strong (one morning coffee Ruth and Owen and you would have your equivalent for a whole year!) We knew that the journey from Teramo to Spoleto was going to take over some lesser, country roads ... read more

Geo: 43.1281, 12.0463Most of Wednesday was spent in the car. One of our objectives was to visit the tiny Republic of San Marino which is one of the smallest countries in the world. Over a delicious breakfast we plotted our course, choosing to go over to the Adriatic coast and drive up from there. Only one problem, there are mountains in between where we are staying and that coast. The drive was very scenic but the roads were narrow, twisting and challenging for a little Fiat 500. Fletcher drove well, enjoying the challenge but we could not drive quickly so it took time. We drove through Umbrino to the coast and then up to Rimini. Naively we thought we would check out the beach there. This is a famous Italian beach resort but imagine Surfers Paradise ... read more

Geo: 43.1281, 12.0463After an unremarkable and uneventful flight we arrived at Fiumincino airport on a foggy morning.Quickly through Customs etc we collected our car, a tiny Fiat 500 which meant most luggage is on the back seat. We followed some back roads, me with the map on my lap and Fletcher as usual making all sorts of noises and comments as he got used to the car and my navigation was not always perfect! (If only it was as easy as for Dora and her map!!)We headed north along the coast to avoid Rome and drove through Civitavecchia to which we will return on Thursday. Our aim was to find a base in Tuscany for a couple of nights to explore the surrounding countryside and ultimately to visit San Marino (to rack up a another country). ... read more

From Florence we drove a couple hours deep into the Italian country side. Unfortunately we were driving at night and couldn't see much of the view but the roads were windy and dirt. It was a little scary, I was definitely pumping the passenger side brake. We arrived at our destination which was in the middle of nowhere. The sky was beautifully clear, full of bright stars. The air was incredibly fresh and crisp. The home we stayed in is a bed and breakfast owned and run but a sweet Italian couple who knew little English. It had all the character and grandeur you could ask for in a 3,000 year old Italian country mini castle. We had our own villa that was impeccably clean and full of modern amenities including a wonderful fireplace. Upon checking ... read more

Dear Max and Dominic, As you know, our plan is to work hard during the week and then spend the weekends exploring parts of Italy near the city we are living in. One thing that makes this very easy is that most of the train lines in Italy go through Bologna, including Speed Trains that go faster than 200 kilometres per hour. Last weekend we decided to explore two cities in a region of Italy called Umbria. This part of Italy is very hilly so quite a few small old towns have been built on hills. The two Hilltowns we wanted to spend time in were Orvieto and Assisi. These towns have been here for a very long time. Orvieto was built on an ancient volcanic hilltop at least 2200 years ago before the Romans had ... read more

Our friends, Sam and Phil, arrived a couple of days ago for a 3-week trip through Italy, bypassing Rome. We had made arrangements prior to the trip to meet up on Sunday in Orvieto, in Umbria. We hopped on a train again at Rome Termini and in just over an hour, we arrived in Orvieto. Sam and Phil were staying near Assisi, and drove the hour to meet us. The train station is at the bottom of a big hill, where the newer part of town is. The old town is several hundred feet up on top of a volcanic outcrop. There are cliffs surrounding about ¾ of the old part of town. We had to pay to ride a funicular up to the top. It was a first for both of us – a funicular ... read more
