Day four was another whirlwind bus day. We are beginning to dislike the bus rides; way too long! We loaded up and headed to Siena for another day of sightseeing and food. Marzio could only drive us as far as the main parking area in the new part of town. We had to hoof it to the old town and the main sights. We first meandered our way to il Campo (the building with the tall bell tower) and its piazza. This is where the different neighborhoods will race horses twice each summer for the distinction of flying the neighborhood flag in their neighborhood. Otherwise, no flag flying! Let me tell you, this would be no easy race. The piazza slopes from the outlying shop buildings down to il Campo. We heard the piazza is lined ... read more

Ciao a tutti! Our three week intensive language course ended Friday, and this week is the beginning of our regular semester classes. I am taking four classes, but one of them actually counts as two classes, and my schedule looks really great. I will continue to have an Italian language class, then I also have an introductory Art History class, complete with field trips to Florence, a class on Italian history, and a class called Education and Linguistics. The education class is about Italian Sign Language and it's going to be pretty challenging. Part of the class is taught by a woman who speaks only in Italian, and with her we learn more of the history, methods, and cultural context. The other half is taught by Roberto, who is deaf and therefore instructs the class entirely ... read more

Day 9 - Rome to Florence via Siena After brekkie it was back to the bus and on our way to the Tuscan hill town of Siena. Siena is reknown for being the best-preserved medieval city in Italy. This is largely due to the fact that very little modern building has taken place inside the city walls since the 16th century, leaving it's character relatively unspoiled. The city centre of Siena is enclosed by walls and gates and is made up of narrow, winding streets and plenty of old buildings and palaces. Our first stop was at the Basilica of St. Dominca which has on display the sacred head of St. Catherine. I'm not sure if the head on display was actually the real head, but it looked pretty creepy. Then we made out way towards ... read more

Hello everyone, well we are in Siena and its raining again. We have had some problems since our last entry. We had a good visit to Radda, Judy and Don, we loved it.Had a little trouble copying photos onto a disc but its done! Small village really with those wonderful cobbled streets and again surrounded by a wall. On the Friday we parked at Montervacchi and took the train to Florence. What a wonderful city, the architecture is incredible, sorry haven,t time to post pictures yet! We had tickets booked for the Uffizi and Accadamia where we saw David by Michelangelo. Word cannot describe this magnificent statue! Even with reserved tickets for both we had to line up for about 1/2 hour. We were exhausted after the Uffizi , again words cannot describe all these wonderful ... read more

Last week, I spoke with Miriam, the director of my program, about finding a place to practice the piano. Up until then, I hadn't played the piano at all in Italy and I really missed it. Luckily, Miriam's brother owns a hotel in Siena and, after clearing it with him, I am now allowed to go to this beautiful hotel and play on the 9 ft. Steinway grand piano in the living room. I went for the first time on Friday and, while I was kind of nervous because the piano is not in a very secluded place and guests often have to walk through the room, I had a wonderful time and look forward to going often. Guests would stop by and listen and talk to me, and I had fun playing and chatting. When ... read more

Just a quick update on an entirely strange and exciting afternoon yesterday.... So, after class ended, I was walking with Hannah, my new friend from Bryn Mawr (we didn't really know each other before coming to Italy, but she's wonderful and I'm glad that Italy introduced us to each other!). We are in the process of making plans for a trip on Saturday. We think that we would like to go back to a beach while the weather is still nice, so we were heading to a travel agency to ask about the best places to go and the transportation. While on the way to our destination, we ran into a group of people looking for a different destination- a group of very tired-looking religious pilgrims carrying an enormous cross. Before I knew what was happening, ... read more

I have to try to remember some of the interesting things that I have done since the last time I updated this...apologies for the disrupted temporality of my thoughts.... Yesterday was my first day of school! For the first three weeks of the semester, we only have intensive language classes, so I go to school every day from 9:30 until between 4 and 5 (with a pretty hefty Itlalian-style lunch break) and only learn Italian...I think it's going to be pretty intense, but my professor is this really fun young woman and the class is very small, so I really enjoyed myself a lot. My Italian is improving very quickly and, although I still obviously make tons of mistakes and still don't understand many things (the other day, I was in a taxi and the driver ... read more

Florence - Siena (Bus) 2-3 September Its un-salted bread is a fitting metaphor for Tuscany. The appearance and the texture of this area, like that of bread, is universally recognisable because this region has been superfluously described in any number of newspaper travel sections, magazines or the glut of “a day of my life in Tuscan …” (insert cliché here - eg: sun; rusticos; olive groves; chianti vineyards), that are crammed into the travel writing shelves of bookstores the world over. Immediately upon biting into a piece of Tuscan bread, I noticed something was amiss. The bread, at first, seemed rather bland. After searching for the explanation to what was missing, the absent ingredient was, in fact, salt. After a feud with their neighbours in Pisa, the coastal city cut the salt supply to the Tuscan ... read more
