Not only did she complain all the way up that short easy walk, but when she was finished, she *leaned* on the guide, red-faced with exertion, and gave him a piece of her mind in French! which he understood, perfectly. It was a terrific day, including the walk. The roads aren't busy at this time of year, and we saw more motorcycles than cars. For motorcycling, this part of the country rivals anything the Kootenay Valley in B.C. has to offer. There are no straight stretches! Anyway, I want to tell you about the toilet, because it was truly amazing. We wandered around this medieval town that was having a sort of medieval festival with wine tasting and stalls of baking and clowns playing games with the children, and onto a back street and found this ... read more

At some point today or tomorrow, Leslie is going to publish a blurb about our day yesterday. You may believe everything she says about the futuristic toilette in Castellina in Chianti, about the beauty of Chianti country and the grandeur of the medieval castles we saw, the friendliness and lovely spirit of Radda in Chianti, and the delightful surprise of finding Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament taking place in Castellina in Chianti. However, do not, for one minute, believe her when she says that we went on a walk that was described in Italian as "facile et corte", meaning easy and short. HAH!! The Italian definition of "facile" means "go up and up and up via turns and twists in the road walking through lovely woods with beautiful scents but always go up and up and ... read more

Margo and I are spending time on our personal pursuits for a good portion of our days here, since she has her research and I am (sort of) learning Italian. I'm attending the Scuola Leonardo da Vinci, ScuolaLeonardo and am enjoying it a lot. The classes are well-paced, and our teacher, Julia, very simpatica. We are a mixed group of different ages, professions and personalities, and now that we know each other a little, it's quite fun. Attending a course of some kind when you are travelling is a great way to connect with a place a little more than you would otherwise. The school organizes other activities, at reasonable cost, that we can be part of, like last night's dinner (buona!!!), and this Sunday's trip to the Chianti region, and, lots of free internet time, ... read more

Leslie is at school and I am on my own right now. Yesterday I spent the morning in San Domenico leaning against the pillar that St. Catherine used to lean against whenever the Mantellata and the rest of the city rejected her or when the priest told her she could not receive Eucharist. I wrote pages and pages in my journal about that experience! I have also found the name of the street on which she had her first experience of God's call on her life and will visit that once I am finished here. Unfortunately, it is way down the longest hill in the city, I think, which means I will have a long climb back up somewhere. Hills here are amazing. I am certain that the Sienese could make a fortune as cat burglars ... read more

Buongiorno di Nonna Margo, Leslie's language lessons are paying off, at least somewhat. She comes back to the room with lots of information and I ask a question about something, generally using a French pronunciation or word or something and she gets this really baffled look on her face and we both dive into our respective Italian books. However, she is getting more proficient every day and I am getting the benefit of her increased knowledge. At least so far I have not mispronounced "penne" and got myself into some kind of bordello!! Thank God!! Mind you, so far I have also managed to avoid saying "penne" at all, just in case. Now, Santa Catarina's house adjoins the guesthouse we are in. From our balcony, we look directly into the entrance to the various oratories and ... read more

Hi from Nonna Leslie! We arrived Sunday, a lovely ride on the Sena bus line, like a greyhound, nonstop from Rome to Siena. We had a very nice driver, very cute, who drove very quickly on the narrow 4-lane highway, with not one but 2 cellphones in his hands. At one point, he was using both of them and driving with his elbows. I decided to look out the window while this was going on, so that I could see how close we came to the trucks we were passing. Margo kept an eye on him. Eventually, he put his headset on and settled down to the journey. Siena is a medieval town, many winding narrow streets that go up and down, and up and down, and up and down, and up and up. Our guesthouse ... read more

The chill of winter was still biting at our bones and we were heading east towards the Italian border along the south of France, hoping, within a matter of a week or two, to reach the warmer climes of Sicily, right down off the toe of Italy. A brief chance then, to ogle briefly at the sights of the Riviera, St Tropez, Ste Maxime Frejus, the Corniche d’Esterelle its red rocks and turquoise sea glowing in the sunshine, and Cannes - incredibly chic against the mountain backdrop, drifting by their sandy ... read more

I've spent in Siena, which is about an hour and a half south of Florence, for the past two days. This week is race week ... so the 17 districts of Siena hang their flags and chant really loudly. And, they show off their horses. Yesterday evening, we wondered down to Il Campo to watch the horses run around the campo. One horse in particular did not want to leave the stable ... in fact he barely moved after the jockey kicked him continuously and the trainer slapped him and pulled him forward. Finally, the jockey dismounted and the horse moved onto the track. Anyway, the whole affair was a lot shorter than expected ... and a parade followed it. I guess it's pretty prestigious to throw flags. Not much else happened in Siena besides laundry and ... read more

Chapter 8 A walk with no pavements For once, Martin was up first, leaving Maya in bed with her thoughts. He headed off to the square to have his morning tea (a tradition he instantly became accustomed too when he first moved to England) and to write his journal. Two pots of tea later, Maya headed over and joined him. They had both wanted to see the Tuscan countryside and had agreed to go exploring. They headed out of Siena on foot, past a mental asylum, where Maya did a remarkable impression which technically should have had her sectioned, or working in a restaurant in Pisa. Once out of the town, the views were spectacular. The Tuscan hills and valleys came together interspersed with small churches every mile or so. The walk was blowing out some ... read more
