After dealing with all the hassles of Rome, I was happy to be on my way to somewhere smaller and quieter. Siena fit the bill perfectly, but first we had to get there. Our train left Termini station about 10 minutes late at just after 9 in the morning. We had tried to secure reservations for the train, but the agent insisted that we did not need them, and so going off my previous experiences I figured we'd be ok. We ended up getting on one of the last cars on the train and it was one of the older compartment cars. We found a couple of empty seats in two different compartments and sat down. Patience was thrown out of her seat with mom almost immediately so she came and joined me. When the train ... read more

I think that to really get to know a culture, it’s quite necessary to pay a nice visit to their medical facilities. For the past little while I’ve been having this problem with my eye where I really can’t see very well, especially out of my left eye, which is definitely kind of a problem. The school decided it was time to take me to the hospital to have it looked at, so I was driven to the hospital right outside of Siena, to the ‘pronto soccorso’ or emergency facility. They directed us downstairs to the eye specialist and, after explaining my status as an American student and filling out the necessary paperwork, I took my seat in the waiting room (ok, so it was actually quite more of a waiting hallway, but anyway..). Now, from ... read more

Just a short entry, to supplement the previous entry. Firstly, the answers to some questions asked in previous entrys. The Italian national horse jumping was held in a town called Arzignano. No right answers (infact, no answers at all). Secondly, the international sport event held in Rimini was indeed the 2006 European Duathalon Championship. well don Bill and Dom, Nice try Ed. Shame none of the sports guys sent an answer. Anyway, 2 more questions (see pictures). The first, is one of me holding my hand in a famous drain cover in Rome, but what is the reason for doing this (according to legend). The second is for you engineers. Can you name the agricultural vehicle in the picture?... read more

The weeks are really just flying right by and I can’t believe I’ll be home in almost exactly a month! Although it will be hard to leave, it will be really exciting to come home and see everyone (and I’m also looking forward to chowing down on some foods I haven’t eaten in awhile...really high on my list are Chinese food, Mexican food, bread and butter instead of olive oil, eggs and bacon, and definitely cutting back on the pasta for awhile). A quick update on my plans for Christmas: my flight doesn’t leave Rome until December 26 at noon, so I had been planning on either spending Christmas here and taking a really early train that morning, but I wasn’t exactly sure how that would work....but....one of my best friends here, Sarah, is from Austria, ... read more

Today we took at day trip to Siena mostly because it was a recommended place to visit according to a few people. I, however, didn't find it perticularly interesting. It was a lot like many of the other places we had visited before then. Maybe I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have because we really didn't have any idea what there was to do there and how exactly to get around once we got off the train. I didn't like how we were pretty much guessing the way to go the whole time. We came up with the bright idea of looking at the horizon for any big churches and then going towards them. Luckly it worked pretty well, but I still wonder if there was a shorter way to get to where ... read more

The weather feels like it's 30 degrees! I made a day trip to Siena tody, the most scenic train ride for me so far with the views of the rolling Tuscan landscape. Sienna is south of Florence and is smaller than Florence but not without its tourists. Most of my time was spent at the Campo a sqaure that's different from the other squares in Italy in that it concaves making it comfortable to lie down on and picnic. The pigeons also have their own bath so they're occupied doing their own thing. I mostly wandered about in attempt to soak in as much rays as I can in hopes of a tan. Hard to believe it's the end of October! The late summer weather has inspired me to check out the Cinque Terre later this ... read more

So, last week I got home from school and went into the kitchen to say ciao to Lucia, and she was cooking dinner. She was explaining to me what she was cooking, and I thought she said ‘cavallo’, which is horse. She was telling me that because it has an odor after you cook it (una puzza), she had to put the pot outside. I was absolutely terrified that she was cooking smelly horse for cena, but little did I realize that, instead of cavallo, she had said ‘cavolofiore’ (I had only heard the ‘cavolo’ part), so I was quite relieved when she brought in a pot full of steamed cauliflower. Everyone had a pretty good laugh about it at dinner. So, when we sat down to dinner the next night, Lucia put a platter of ... read more

Now for my first entry as my 21 year old self. Hopefully my writing will sound more mature, as I think I have gained much experience and insight since turning 21.... The weekend before my birthday was a very relaxing and beautiful one. On Saturday, I went with school to a vineyard in the countryside to participate in the vendemmia, the grape harvest. We arrived, energetic and ready to get out there and get some grapes! We had a warm, sunny day, and armed with ‘fornice,’ the clippers, we went out to the fields with the workers, who were all very friendly and welcoming, happy to talk to us about our experiences in Italy thus far (some of them called me ‘Regina Elisabetta’ ‘Queen Elizabeth’). Now, if you will all recall, in the personal profile of ... read more

This morning we woke up, checked out of the hotel, and hopped on a charter bus (hired by the school) to Siena. I am such a dope. On the bus, I was looking at the gorgeous scenery and I was sitting by Emilio, so I asked Ïs Siena close to Tuscany?¨Grant was like, Mary, we've been in Tuscany! It's a region, not a city, silly. Yes, that's what a silly billy I am. Don't worry though, my silliness is not a measure of my competence in Europe by myself. Anyways, I loved the bus ride because it was gorgeous and it only took about an hour to get to Siena. We looked around, went to the Cathedral, and the Campo. We climbed a huge tower, I forgot the name of it. It was bit scarry, because ... read more

Geo: 44.0964, 11.7963Ended up sitting with two Spanish ladies and a Brazilian at breakfast. It was a good opportunity to practice my crappy Spanish - turns out that they were all going to Siena as well, today. Alejandra and Carolina were both from Buenos Aires and Beatrice was from a town in Brazil (the name of which I've forgotten). They had all met on this trip. I found it amazing that they could understand each other perfectly - Beatrice spoke solely in Portuguese and Alejandra and Carolina stuck to Spanish. Though I've been told that Spanish speakers can easily understand Portuguese, I've always been pretty lost with the language. On the train ... I saw someone that looked like the Italian version of Kate Beckinsale!!! All I can say is "WOW". Other than that, the train ... read more
