I made a mistake on my last entry, and neglected to publish it. So I could see it, but nobody else could. Well, Nancy and I thoroughly enjoyed our REI trip, which ended yesterday. Now we've moved on to Siena (or Sienna, in English). We'll be here through Tuesday morning, and then move on to Orvieto. September is the time of the Palio, the big bare-back horse race around the piazza. But the festivities are winding up. One torré, or team, just marched by in their colorful medieval costumes and drums. I believe that next weekend the teams are chosen that will actually compete in the Palio, so this is a big week for them.... read more

So let's see, what's been going on? First off, the end of V-day was nice. We went to see "The Libertine" and yep, it was all dubbed in Italian. I got about 50% of it, but at least I got the gist. It started at 10:30, and right after I had to head back to the apt. to finish my oral presentation that I had yesterday. I had to talk for 15 minutes on the history of Siena, I don't know how long it is, but I think it was long enough. The rest of yesterday was awesome. We had a little art tour with Richard (program director) and he is the craziest person ever! (This was after class) We walked around in the Palazzo Pubblico, the duomo and the catedrale. All the while he was ... read more

Well, it's Valentine's Day, and not much is going on. I don't have a date, but I could if I wanted to! Haha, The guys here, especially the ones that go to bars like The Red Baron are all about the American girls. I don't think I mentioned Lorenco before, but I met him on… Friday night, I think. I got him to buy me a drink, but he made me have it in the back of the club at a sort of secluded table. Luckily friends came back to check on me, and eventually I was able to get myself out of the situation. Not without a kiss though… :-P Actually, it was as I was busy losing him in the crowd that I ran into Ali, but that is a story for another time ... read more

So yesterday I had my first class (Italian, of course) and the teacher was very cool. Her name is Fiora. Afterwards I headed to the AHA building for a little internet-age and then back to the apartment for homework and dinner. Class doesn't feel like class, it feels like sitting in a small room chatting with 6 friends and an slightly older woman. Anyway, dopo la cena I met up with Becca to head over to the Pub to get Dave, Alex, Sarah and Catherine to go to the Red Baron (the bar/club we had decided on). When we got there there weren't many people so we started out with a shot and then Becca and I got mixed drinks and everyone else got a beer. We sat and talked and had a really good time ... read more

We started the day right this time. Woke up early (still only 3 hours of sleep...I think this might be a jet lag record ) and had breakfast, stopped at only one shoe store for, guess what, boots on our way to the train station to catch a late afternoon train to Siena. Siena was recommended to us by several peeps and my Loney Planet guide. It was a very short trip, but we enjoyed the scenery and took lots of pictures. We visted the Duomo of Siena and it was crazy fabulous inside. We visited the Piazza del Campo which is just a cool little square where they hold this semiannual horse race. The preserved head and part of the thumb of St. Catherine is displayed in Siena but we decided to forgo on this ... read more

For our last night in Siena we all decided to go to a great restaurant Prof. Arena recommended. We had great wine and the caprese salad was amazing. I ordered grilled chicken alomg with five other people at our table. At restaurants, the waiters and waitresses bring the food out as soon as it's prepared. In America we know that most restaurants bring out meals when the whole table's foods are ready. So, two hours into waiting for my meal I began to get very frustrated. I asked the waiter where my food was and he told me he forget to write it down! Now if I were in America I would have demanded to speak to the manager, probably received my meal for free along with free dessert! Waiters and waitresses don't have to work ... read more

Today I had quite an experience as I tried to send postcards to some friends and family back home. I bought stamps a few days before at a tobacchi, which is like a little cigarette store that sells everything from magazines to cigarettes to stamps and sometimes food. Buying the stamps was a challenge in itself because I do not speak any Italian and had to show the man at the register my postcards and point to the place where the stamp was. After writing out my postcards, I went to the post office right across the street from our hotel. When I walked in I was so overwhelmed by the building itself. It looked as if it was an old church. There were high ceilings with beautiful paintings on them and the floor was in ... read more

Two days ago we arrived in Siena and let me say, it is beautiful! It is much different than Rome. There aren't many cars and I think there are only a few main roads. It is much more relaxed and what I expected Italy to be like. There are so many little shops which makes it so difficult to not want to shop. Especially when they say "SALDI!" all over! It just draws your attention inside. Something very interested happened today at the market. I bought a can of pringles and a 1.5 liter of water (by the way, it was only around $0.25!!!) and the cashier asks if I wanted a bag. Obviously I did because my water was huge! So I said yes and she charged me for it! $0.04! I know that it ... read more

As I write this we are now in the beautiful town of Siena. Yesterday we all boarded buses and headed to Assisi where we toured the church of St. Francis of Assisi, which was an interesting experience because of all of strong religious presence in the town. I was able to learn many things about the Catholic religion and St. Francis in general that I did not know before. After visiting Assisi, we got on busses again and headed to Siena. As we drove, I tried to stay awake and look at the scenes outside of the window. I was amazed at the beautiful scenery all around the countryside. There were tons of mountains with snowy tops and fields of grapes, which I assume are used to make wine! When we arrived in Siena, I was ... read more
