Today I brought my laptop to the villa where I will have school in the fall, and I am now relaxing in the student lounge and using the wireless internet. I thought it was high time to show everyone a few pictures of my adventures thus far....bear with me as I figure out how to do this.... ... read more

I had my first Italian exam for my class today, and despite the fact that I was completely exhausted from being out entirely too late last night, I think I did pretty well. Things are getting pretty exciting, as Siena is preparing for the Palio, a horserace that happens twice every summer in Siena (I'll explain it in more detail after it happens when I know a little more. I've been reading about it, but I won't fully understand it until it happens, especially because I've been reading about it in Italian...). But basically, Siena is divided into seventeen sections, (each section is called a contrada), and they compete in the horserace held in the Piazza del Campo. The different contrade have been having these huge outdoor parties that I've been going to, and they are ... read more

On Saturday, I thought that I might sleep in a little because I had been out pretty late the night before....but Nonna Tina and the Swedish student woke me up earlier than I wanted because he was leaving (for good!) and he wanted to take a picture and say goodbye. Well, I guess getting rid of him wasn't really the worst reason to wake up.... At dinner on Friday, Nonna Tina got really excited and said she had a dessert surprise for us. She went into the kitchen and came back with a strawberry cake kind of thing and a large bottle of Limoncello (spelling?). She poured me a glass and gave me some cake, so I took a big sip and coughed like crazy. I think it tasted like nail polish remover (and, come to ... read more

I can't believe I've already been in Italy for a week. Looking back, it seems impossible that life can change so much in only a week. I've grown in so many ways through my experiences thus far (including the horizontal way I have grown from all of the delicous Italian cuisine I have been consuming- Mom and Dad, if you're wondering where all of the money is going, most of it is for the large quantities of gelato that I pack away every day). This week has been filled with so many different emotions for me-I've been scared to fly for the first time, embarrassed many times (e.g. like when I was on the plane and the girl beside me asked if I could get up to let her out to go to the bathroom. Completely ... read more

Today was market day in Siena, so I got up early to accompany Nonna Tina to the market. It was a totally overwhelming experience. The streets become packed with vendors selling everything--clothes, household items, shoes, delicious food, jewelry, purses.....and the streets are packed with intense shoppers. There was even an outdoor bar set up where I suppose people could stop by and take a few shots if the pressures of shopping became too great. I shopped for awhile with Nonna Tina, then after she left I browsed around by myself. At one point I was looking at some clothes, and an Asian man who worked at the stand came over to me and starting saying something about the items I was looking at. I smiled and told him I didn't understand, "non capisco," so I guess ... read more

Well, after leaving Cham at 9 am on Tuesday morning, a series of excellent bus and train connections landed me in Genoa around 4 pm. The tourist information office was horrified that I had not pre-booked accommodation in Genoa so I suggested I could keep going on to Cinque Terre. Greater look of horror. She told me people were coming back from there to Genoa to get accommodation. Oops. Turned out, the HI hostel had beds so I spent 3 nights there, subjected to the worst bus ride ever multiple times a day up a series of windy roads. Genoa was not a pleasant town. And that was my opinion before I received my first souvenir from Italy - a copy of the police report for my stolen purse! No real damage done, except the inconvenience ... read more

I just ducked into an Internet cafe from my first Italian rainstorm! I'm having an overwhelming but very wonderful time in Siena so far. The language barrier is frustrating at times, because there are so many things I want to say that I can't find the words for, but that's why I need to work hard at learning! The flight went well and I was actually surprisingly calm (without even taking any tranquilizers!). I apologize if there are mistakes or random symbols in this entry; I'm still getting used to the placement of the keys on this keyboard. And, in addition, when I was reaching into my toiletry bag to get my toothbrush this morning, I slit my finger on my razor, as the cap had come off. I couldn't remember how to say 'razor' or ... read more

Happy Father's Day to all of our father's! We all wish you a wonderful day and we will do a toast to you at dinner tonight. We left Cinque Terre yesterday and took the train to Lucca. In Lucca we rented bikes and rode on a 6 A.D. wall around the city. It is amazing that we are seeing such old history. The city was beautiful. After we left Lucca we took the train back to Florence to catch the train to Siena. At the station we realized that the last train (in 15 minutes) was 1 3/4 hours. At 8:15 p.m. we decided to catch a taxi. I think that it was nice to get here straight to the hotel, dump our bags and look for food. Upon arriving in the Plazza we were going ... read more

My friend Veronika introduced me to her friends Alex and Michael Sean who moved to Siena from San Francisco two years ago with their two daughters. They were so great, welcoming me into their home, giving me recommendations on what to see and where to stay, and I actually stayed with them one night. I then headed to a hotel nearby that is actually an old convent and still run by nuns. It even had an 11:30 curfew! But for 40 euros a night I guess I can abide by the rules. Although I wasn’t there during the Palio (look it up online for the interesting story), I did get a great explanation from Michael Sean and also watched the 20 minute movie about it in town. Sounds like a site to see (guess I’ll have ... read more
