Thursday, July 14, 2011 Day Tripping Rising in the morning with slight symptoms of a hangover, I dressed and headed out to the train station. Destination: Pisa. Before leaving for Italy, I reserved a time to climb the tower, so I wouldn’t be restricted to whatever time slot was available when I arrived. It was my third time visiting the Pisa train station, and I think it’s the weirdest one I’ve seen. There is a waiting room with benches, but the walls are painted a shade of fuchsia that makes your eyes squint just looking at it. And there are black lights in the toilet stalls. Maybe it was an attempt to be modern, but it only accomplished creating an atmosphere of an Ikea reject. To use the bathroom here, by the way, was €0.60. Which ... read more

Pisa is worth the trip, once. The Field of Miracles is beautiful complex. Seeing the tower was rather surreal. We tried hard to get the right picture!... read more

Once you've seen the tower there isn't much more to do From Bologna I took a one day trip to Pisa. One day in Pisa was quite enough for me. Pisa is just like Bologna an old historical city but unlike Bologna in Pisa there isn't much to see. There are many old palaces around but most of them are closed or at least not open for public. Pisa has the famous leaning tower of course and next to it there is a cathedral. Those two occupied me for a few hours. For very good reasons I can add. Both are wonderful examples of the greatness of Italian art and at the same time a good witness to the fact that Italians aren't the best engineers in the world. But once you have seen the tower ... read more

Spent my last night in Budapest with my two new friends who were also staying and studying at the same Budapest study abroad program. One is from Armenia and the other NY by way of the Dominican. Ironically, we went out for Italian and I had one of the best meals of my life. Three cheese potato dumplings. I also learned that no matter what country you are from, what level of education you have, or you age --that three girls and bottle of wine always turns into boy talk. I then took a taxi to a hotel close to the airport. The taxi was great. I was able to see all of Budapest shining at night which was crazy beautiful. The hotel manager couldn't find my reservation so he upgraded my room. Additionally, I made ... read more

Yes, we joined the hordes of other tourists in Europe this summer and visited the infamous leaning tower of Pisa. It was on the way to Florence, a quick hop off the train followed by a 20 minute hike across the Arno River. The day was hot, but our legs were strong because we'd been riding the train since 5:45 that morning. And nearly every block we walked there was a new gelato place, so we were motivated. You can't see the tower from the train station, nor anywhere in the old city of Pisa. You walk and walk, then cross the Arno, then walk some more, and suddenly there it all is--three white stone buildings, the tower, the baptisery, and the baslica--all gleamingly white on a bed of green grass. It truly is stunning, despite ... read more

Days 10 & 11 30-31st May Levanto - Pisa Day 10 Sky blue, temp 25-29 degrees. We took the bikes & went exploring. Down the coast a little we found a secluded rocky beach scattered with a few bronzing Italians. Established base, jumped off and swam out to rocks, sunbathed and read. We ate a late lunch perched on the pavement surrounded by geraniums & jasmine; we overlooked the piazza and watched the world go by. Barbequed & played cards. Another tough day at the office! Day 11 Another sunny day. Broke camp. El Piloto & I are now pretty slick at this & within an hour we were squeezing Big Bess under the gate & off to Pisa. En route we pass through Carrara, the home of marble. It is to these marble quarries that ... read more

This morning I said goodbye to Florence. The owner gave me a big hug and kiss on the cheek and said "when you come back to Florence, baby?" She has taken to calling me baby since about the first five minutes after meeting her. Come back ... I certainly hope so one day but I think that I will try to get through the rest of this trip first. Then I'll start thinking about the next one!! I of course took the train to Pisa and it is an easy one-hour ride. My hotel is just a short walk from there and I found it with no problems. My room was not ready when I arrived so the girl very innocently asked "can you go for walk and come back?" and then she whips out this ... read more

After parking in a grotty city centre car park and wandering along an untractive urban street we turned the corner to be met with not one but four splendid monuments. We were in the "Field of Miracles" lying to the northwest of the city centre of Pisa. Not only were we admiring the world famous Leaning Tower but also the Duomo, begun in 1063, the Baptistry, started in 1152, and the Campo Santo cemetery ,begun in 1278. Each has a story to tell. Campo Santo contains earth from the Holy Land also as the rich and famous of the city of Pisa. The Baptistry is still used for baptisms as well as concerts as it has unrivalled acoustics. The Duomo has a glorious facade with coloured sandstone decorated with inticate flowers and animals in inlaid marble. ... read more

We started our 2 week trip around Tuscany on the edge of its northern borders and based ourselves in La Spezia, a naval port about one hours drive north of Pisa. Our first day of rambling was around the island of Palmaria and here we followed a circular path around the island and we were rewarded with spectacular views of the Gulf of Poets. At the end of our walk we crossed back over to the seaside town of Portovenere. This colourful town is set in a sweeping bay and was once the haunt of Byron and Shelley. Byron has a cave named after him as well as a few restaurants!!!! Standing over and dominating the town is the 16th century castle. The following day we tackled the Cinque Terre Walk starting at Riomaggiore and taking ... read more

Today we went to Pisa. We walked for what seemed like ages to the bus stop, which we then caught into Pisa - to right outside the famous leaning tower! The tower and the other buildings were beautiful and it was funny to see what it looked like before they restored it. Here are some pics we took. My camera died soon after we got there so I used some of Mum's here too. x :)... read more
