Palermo (Sicilian: Palermu, Greek: Panormus) is a historic city in southern Italy, the capital of the autonomous region Sicily and the province of Palermo. The city is noted for its rich history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its existence; it is over 2,700 years old. Palermo is located in the north-west of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Palermo in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The city was founded by the Phoenicians, but named by the Ancient Greeks as Panormus meaning all port. Palermo became part of the Roman Republic and eventually part of the Byzantine Empire, for over a thousand years. For a brief period it was under Arab rule where it first became a capital. Following the Norman reconquest, Palermo would become capital of a new kingdom ... read more

As our family, way back when, moved from Palermo Sicily, to New Orleans Louisiana USA, my brother requested that Sicily be a part of his Italian vacation. We passed two days in Palermo, and walked a good bit of the central and port areas. We woke up early to make it to the Cappuchin Catacombes. It was basically a crypt with preserved bodies and skeletons everywhere. Most of them were skeletons, but there was the occasional body that still had hair, or skin, or there was the baby who is over 80 years old, who is still perfectly preserved. check it out! . It was interesting, to say the least. On the way, we went to the many sites, some churches, the cathedral, and such. We went to the Market La Vucciria, where we walked around ... read more

evening all, right, last entry from palermo, and thought i might as well take advantage of the free net access for the last time as 2mo we head for the deep south of italy, mazara del vallo, and we are staying on a campsite, so im pretty sure they wont have net access there! 2day we had another ace day, the weather was amazing again, and i was in my shorts, and kerry, looking like a true brit abroad with my milky white legs out. after going to the station to get our coach tickets for our journey 2mo morning, we hit yet another market, and as much as i enjoyed it, it wasnt as big and varied as the other swe have seen, but the street food was just as good if not better. i ... read more

Hey all, For the first time on this thing, kerry is sitting next to me, so she can censor the funny things that she did today. (i usually stay away cos its painful to watch him type - KA). We've had another ace day of 26+C sun in the island's capital, one of my favourite days of the trip so far, after the best nights sleep of the whole trip 2! After a slightly bad start (the loud 15 americans we are sharing the place with had eaten all the pastries), we hit the streets and walked up to the Cathedral, which was totally different to anything we have seen so far, as it is very strange to see a church surrounded by palm trees! after doing that inside and out, we walked up to the ... read more

Hi all, so, first entry from palermo, sicilia, and i must say, i think i would put this city at the top of my list so far. it is amazing, such a contrast to anything we have see so far. and the way we arrived was a new one for us too. we opted out of getting the ferry from napoli to palermo, and get the train instead, as it was 10 euros cheaper, and took 2 hours less. however, i was pretty unsure that it was possible to get the train to sicily, as was pretty sure there was no bridge or tunnel connecting them (to stop "the unmentioned" bringing "unmentioned" powers over to the mainland). our journey was pretty interesting, me and kerry sharing a cabin with two football coaches taking 20 odd 13 ... read more

so, i have finally pinned myself down for long enough to sit and write a new entry. im in sicily at present, i think i mentioned that i was on my way here whilst writing and sitting in that lovely little airport in london. well here i am. sicily. a town called palermo to be exact. a town where no one speaks english (and i mean no one) and traffic lights act as only a suggestion, not an actual law. beautiful beautiful. there is a magic here, i can feel it. being somewhere so embedded with such an intense culture is a truly stunning thing to behold. how can i even begin to explain what i see when i step out of my hotel every morning? even the everyday, mundane details of life are not mundane ... read more

Today was our day on Sicily - the huge island right at the tip of the boot of Italy. We docked in Palermo and decided to take a double-decker bus tour. Again, this is sometimes the best way to see a city in such a short period of time. We won’t lie…we did not care for Palermo at all. It was smelly, crowded, hot and poor. We stumbled into some very unsavory neighborhoods looking for the churches, catacombs and museums on our tour. It just didn’t do it for us. Two redeeming things: 1) Sicilians make the BEST bread in Italy - Gus had a great sub-style sandwich and Jen had a very interesting and spectacular dough stuffed with cotto ham (yes, the love affair continues) and mozzarella which is then topped with fresh tomato slices, ... read more

On our last day full day in Sicily we grabbed an early morning taxi and rushed to Marina Lunga to catch the ferry to Palermo. The only problem was all ferries to Naples and Palermo were grounded due to bad (windy) weather. We exchanged our tickets for a hydrofoil ride to Milazzo, which is a straight (short) shot back to the mainland. From there we boarded a train to Palermo and enjoyed the 2.5 hour train ride along the coast. It allowed us to see a bit of the countryside paticularly between Cefalu and Porticello. Sabrina gratiously picked us up at Stazione Centrale and we were wisked off to our hotel. Later that afternoon as a farewell tribute to Sicily we visited Museo Archaelogica Regionale and the Ars Siciliae exhibition held in the Palazzo dei Normanni ... read more
