What ho and top of the morning to all - feeling chipper as just back from a great gym workout. I really must keep this up when I get back (famous words......) - I think over 60's get good gym deals as there aren't many applicants, or, perhaps, survivors. I'll need to fill the time up somehow. In the middle of the Med currently, in Palermo tomorrow where I've booked a coach trip. I think there's more to Sicily than a volcano, - Mafiosi and machine guns if the rumours are right. Let's find out. This is the 6th sea day - these days pass in a state of mindless pleasantness, until rehearsal rolls around at 4.30. Tonight it's a Tina Turner tribute - she of the big hair, legs, strutting etc. - we get the ... read more

Tuesday was an at sea day so we were able to relax on ship and take in some of the activities offered. The ship is very nice and in comparison to other ships we have been on, the Brilliance of the Seas has a much different layout. Even though the ship was sold out it feels like most of the passengers are staying in their rooms. We both entered the slot tournament but only Lisa made it to the final round. She did not win the big prize but did get a t-shirt. Later in the day the casino held a free raffle and Lisa won a prize, a free facial massage in the spa. Jim had fun playing a game where quarters are dropped into a slot and then a moving shelf stacks up the ... read more

There was a long free weekend December 5 through the 8th. We had Friday off like normal and we also had Monday off because it was an Italian holiday. (Though I have no idea what holiday it was) I went with many other people for a few days to Sicily to see the far south of Italy. I left on Thursday night for the train station because I was planning to spend the night in the airport along with some other friends that had an early flight out of Rome’s airport. When we arrived at the train station the train we wanted to take was running an hour late (yes, an hour) so we had to find another route to the airport, otherwise we would miss our flight even though we left the night before. We ... read more

November 27, 2008 Happy Thanksgiving! We made it to Palermo after an exhilarating day at the Valley of the Greek Temples in Agrigento yesterday. We were able to explore several Greek temples overlooking the Mediterranean outside of the city. It was spectacular! It is truly amazing that such structures could remain fairly intact after 2000+ years! After hiking around the ruins, we were able to take a nice cappuccino/gelato break down by the lido. After snacking, the kids put on their swimsuits and went for a dip in the sea! There is a real advantage of touring this time of year because there are not many people and the temperature, although not hot, is really quite pleasant! The beach was deserted with the exception of a handful of other tourists doing the same thing as us! ... read more

04 Oct 2008 With a bit of forehand experience of the A19 and other roads, our trip across to Palermo was quicker and easier than the drive out. Kylie's sense of direction worked pretty well - even in the traffic madness in the older part of Palermo that we had to traverse to get into the port area (possibly almost as bad as Naples). At the port, thanks to the magic words "Maggiore rental" we got past all the security and were able to park at the rental place, where we left our luggage still locked in the car and went walking up into the city. On our walk we found a number of excellent ceramics shops and clothing shops, although being their siesta time many were closed. We ended up resting at the Piazza Pretoria ... read more

Woke up at 0630am on Wed morn to torrential rain. With a 40min walk to the train stn I had a slight sinking feeling - perhaps this was not going to be the easiest trip? Luckily, Keith our host had also heard and offered a lift. The drama really started when we arrived in Cosenza. In keeping with ancient Paul tradition lack of planning would feature heavily throughout the journey. We got off the train, fully expecting to jump on a taxi straight to AVIS and our car. Unfortunately, there were no taxis outside the stn. And, according to staff, we were unlikely to get one. A number 26 bus was suggested so we waited in the pissing rain sharing umbrellas with two amused students who, upon leaving, pointed out the bus shelter 10yards behind us ... read more

Well since Iceland, I’ve had a busy couple of months. My trip to Italy has been and gone and I loved it, and over the coming blogs, by the photos you will be able to see why. I originally thought I would only need one for the whole Italy trip, but due to over 1,000 photos taken, that made that a little ambitious! But first things first; a week after Iceland, I moved into a new flat with (originally) two South African girls, Kim and Meg (sisters), one Aussie girl, Ally, and a French couple, Ben and Kat. But the French couple are no longer a couple so it’s just me and the four girls. It’s a pretty fun place to live and bigger, closer to the centre and cheaper than my last place so I’ve ... read more

Roaming along the various beaches and coastline of Sicily and southern Italy, sampling the local cuisine all made with the freshest produce and offering endless gelato ice-cream flavours, stopping only to take a swim or take shelter under a tree from the hot sun whilst looking through ancient ruins which have captivated mankind for hundreds of years. Thinking you could get used to this? Well this was our life for 10 days as James and I travelled through Sicily and up through the southern Italian towns until we reached the mecca of Rome. So come and join me for the first of three instalments of the Italian Adventures of Hannahlina and Jamesone!* *(Hannah-lea-nah & James-oh-knee) We started our venture in the Sicilian town of Palermo, where James’ friend Laurel kindly gave us a bed for the ... read more

Hi there from beautiful Sicily, land of sunshine, music, great food, Greek ruins, volcanoes, mud pools, endless olive trees, and enternal heat.....the last being the death of me.....an exageration but I have to say the heat is never ending. Day and night it seems like the temps are in the 40s. Since the last blog I sailed from Malta where I stayed with Maria and Karl for 10 days and had a wonderful stay, I arrived in the south of Sicily and after a week of camping and cycling around the sites, I then headed north via the cape to visit Syracuse and further north to Taormina, pearched overlooking the ocean and with Mt Etna blowing her stack in the near distance. Catania a few miles south was the next rest stop where I did a ... read more
