We chose Palermo as our base for this trip to Sicily, because there are so many day trips possible by both train and bus, meaning we did not need a car. We took a bus to the hill city of Monreale, only 8 kilometers from Palermo, on Tuesday, to view the splendid mosaic-covered cathedral and enjoy the panoramic views from the town. When we arrived, the cathedral was of course closed for the mid-day break. Any of you who have traveled here know about the strange opening hours of churches, even those with bus loads of tourists and school children arriving all day, like this one! While waiting for the afternoon opening, we visited the Cathedral museum and then walked down a touristy street, looking for a cafe that was not crowded with school kids on ... read more

Cefalu is our first stop in Sicily. It is a very photogenic seaside resort which has an old town and a towering hill complete with Castillo and old archeological ruins. The hill, called La Rocca, provided us with a steep morning walk and spectacular views. In fact, Etna and its snowy peak could be seen in the distance along with the Aeolian islands which will be out next stop. Despite the distant snow it is quite hot and I enjoyed a swim in the crisp and clear ocean this afternoon. Other tourists are spending the day baking their already burnt red skins. I have managed to avoid the gelato today but it sure is tempting! We lunched on local bread filled with sweet cherry tomatoes.... read more

Tek başına g... read more

As we walked down the track towards his shelter, Giulio was busily raking goat scat very evenly over the dusty path. I was in open-toe sandles. The Antipodean contingent were in sensible shoes, having been forewarned by Carmelina. Only I had to hook out goat droppings lodged inbetween my toes. Giulio is our resident shepherd and today we were going to see him make ricotta "the old way" which means that there were no EU inspectors in the area that day to check up on things. "We've been making it like this since the dawn of creation", he said. He has 250 goats and sheep scattered over the mountainside but a good number of them were in the pen this morning and they had already been milked. You may already know that goat's milk is a ... read more

Meet me by the rubbish bins, said Carmelina. We were off to recee a walk in the Nebrodi National Park in the Province of Messina. Carmelina is my walking companion, or rather I am her walking companion as she runs an eco-sustainable tourism company from the village of Sant'Ambrogio near Cefalù www.sicilianexperience.com and also leads walking holidays. We recee new walks all over Sicily together. Generally, we are regarded as two weird english-speaking ladies who obviously have nothing better to do than walk along overgrown tracks looking for that turn-off which has invariably disappeared over time. Nothing like Ordinance Survey maps exist here. Just totally incomprehensible military maps which we are convinced the military has never actually used, otherwise we would surely have come across some crazed wandering soldiers trying t... read more

Our trip over from Malta to Catania in eastern Sicily didn't quite go as originally planned. Our early morning flight from Malta was delayed, and delayed and further delayed......because of volcanic dust from Mt Etna. Air Malta finally conceded and cancelled the flight mid afternoon. So, an unexpected night in Malta and onto Plan B! We managed to get a booking on a fast ferry the following morning from Malta to Pozzanno. The catamaran was huge, modern and finished the 60km trip in just over an hour. A shared taxi trip up to Syracuse meant that our travel plans were back to normal. We had three nights in the fascinating town of Syracuse. This town figures prominently in ancient history with significant buildings going back to the 6th century BC. Much of this is to be ... read more

After having absolutely zero sleep on the ultra uncomfortable night train, I found my hostel and then went straight back to the train station to go to Cefalu to get some more use out of my interrail pass. Cefalu is the second most popular beach resort in Sicily after Taormina. The sky was murky, but I perservered up the mountain trail to get near to the summit of La Rocca on which sits the medievel ruins of Tempio di Diana from the 9th century BC. Then the heavens opened as I suspected they would and it started to bucket it down! I was there in my silly floaty summer dress and silly slippery sandals trying to find shelter. I eventually found a little bit of shelter in a ruined alcove but got bored and wanted to ... read more

We woke up this morning, and made our way to Cefalù, as I happened to have some American friends from the program vacationing there. We decided to lay out... and the guys decided to take a dip in ICY cold water. After swimming out, they wanted me to come into (at least waist deep) to take a picture... gullibly I accepted this offer, even though the entire time I was saying "I don't trust these guys" and "don't touch me! you're freezing!"... they go to take the picture... and DUNK me into the freezing cold water. Thanks guys, for my first swim of the season... I owe you one. After drying off, we went to a beach front restaurant, and ATE our lil' hearts out! I dined on risotto with sea food, then mussel "soup" (which ... read more
