Adventures in Alghero…stunning views, stereotypical family antics, smiles, sunshine and smuggling. I have been sharing my house in London with a lovely Sardinian woman, L, for about a year now and she has always said that I must come to Alghero with her sometime. Trying to align our busy schedules was a challenge but we finally decided on a Sunday and Monday in mid-October. The direct flights from London-Alghero don’t go on Saturdays and she had to work on Friday. The forecast looked warm and sunny and that with the promise of Sardinian food and relaxation made the decision easy. We were picked up in a taxi at 4am on Sunday morning which was slightly painful but the promise of breakfast in Alghero kept my glass half full so to speak. Stansted Airport is a place ... read more

What an absolutely stunning location for a relaxing Summer holiday. The weather was perfect, beaches beautiful, water crystal clear, and food as always unbelievably yummy. Italy, yet again has not let us down. We must recommend that you try and stay with a fab couple who run a gorgeous little B&B http://raimblanc.it/ - they will be sure to let you experience a real Sardinian lifestyle. You'll be enjoying a delicious breakfast consisting of local produce, and won't have to worry about hiring a beach umbrella or towels... Giovanni and Consolata (the B&B owners) made our stay memorable and made us fall in love with Alghero. We will be back!... read more

We made it to Sardinia! Thank goodness! Wasn't so sure we would, but I'll talk about that later...first, Florence! No Internet access there or Rome. Florence was great! We found a panini shop all the locals go to for cheap eats. And we went there a couple times : ) We saw the Duomo, a cathedral you can't miss because it is MASSIVE. Jo hustled a street salesman for a painting. We met anItalian man named Sirrenzo who may or may not be part of the mafia. But he taught us all about leather and sent us through his leather school. We climbed 1,001 steps to see the BEST view of the city, mountains, and rural area from Piazza Michelangelo. Unfortunately we didn't see a lot of Renaissance art because we had NO clue the lines ... read more

OK, I admit, I am not expecting to win any awards for these titles, but at least they go to show that the week-long stay in Sardinia has put me in sufficiently high spirits. The next location for the hotel stay was in a rural setting perched midway between Alghero's airport and the Mussolini-planned town of Fertilia, stemming from the neo-fascist era of occupation. En route, there was a lot of terrain to be covered, and as such, an entire day was devoted to doing precisely that - a leisurely scenic drive through dramatic landscapes and noteworthy towns and settlements. The first stop-off point was a rural one, and the rocky landscapes of the Valle della Luna (valley of the moon) provided a couple of photo opportunities, as well as a chance to get to grips ... read more

Our 3rd day in Sardinia began in the same manner as the last - pathetic breakfast at the "B&B", then a morning at the beach. This time the beach was lovely, and we were looking quite fit sitting alongside some bulging beauties from Poland. We were happy to see a flag raised nearby where we were sitting that said "Alghero: Catalan Country of Sardinia" - força al català! I should also mention that by this point I looked like I had a plethora of third nipples all over my body thanks to mass-quantities of insect bites that I had incurred during the night. Once we'd had our fill of the beach we again chose to go the cheap lunch route and had another round of oil-soaked delicacies washed down with Sardinian beer. This time we added ... read more

Day two started out with breakfast in our B&B. Now, when I say B&B one might have visions of a fabulous old Sardinian villa with a spread of fresh peaches from the trees outside, pastries from the grandma living down the road, and cheese's made from the cows and goats in the pasture. Wrong. In our B&B we have packaged "breakfast pastries" as well as some jams, juices, and espresso. It's free, so we're not really complaining I guess. Since it was nice outside we sat it fit to spend a couple hours at the beach, some 7 minutes from our abode. Alex and I affectionately refer to our neighborhood as the slums, but its really not bad at all, just ugly residential buildings that look all the same, some cats, and not the best upkeep. ... read more

Our 4:30-ish flight to Alghero on RyanAir went quite smoothly despite RyanAir's brain-damaged check-in policy for non-EU travelers and their Nazi-esque "does your bag ACTUALLY fit in the metal thing?" baggage policy. With our arrival in Alghero, or L'Alguer in Catalan, I have now been to every major Catalan-speaking region: Andorra, Spain's regions of Catalunya, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands, France's Pyreneés Orientales department, and now L'Alguer. Alghero was founded in 1102 by the Genoese for centuries until in 1353 the Aragonese under Bernardo de Cabrera arrived. What then ensued was essentially ethnic cleansing as the population was replaced by Catalans and Catalan became the city's prominent language. By the early 16th century Alghero received the status of King's City (ciutat de l'Alguer) and began to legitimately develop. Eventually it would become know as La Barcelone ... read more

Perhaps I am repeating myself but the place we have discovered is truely FANTASTIC! It is near the beach without beaing in the center of all the chaos during the summer month, granted now is the mid season... The owners of this little holiday rental / B&B had the great idea of giving their home a name La Rosa Dei Venti they are on a hill and can always establish where the wind is coming from. As mentioned in yesterdays entry they are starting up their own website, which I must say so far is looking rather professional. Have a look www.vacationsardegna.com Soon you will even be able to book directly via the site. A few friends and neighbours have joined together and will all be featured on the site. WOW! What a place! I can not believe that we are half way through October and yesterday I was still swimming on Lazaretto beach, a beach near Alghero. Found a beautiful vacation home rented out as a B&B, the house is split in two and the owners live just next door. Only 15 minutes drive from the beach, true bliss. They are currently trying to build their website to attract more people to this great place, and got to hand it to them for the effort. Check out their site http://www.vacationsardegna.com they expect to finish it by the end of the month. Got to Alghero via ferry leaving from Barcelona to Porto Torres, and highly recommend Grimaldi Lines for this. Very professional, ferries are clean and staff are friendly. As the ferry leaves at +/- 22:00 ... read more
