Ciao! Today is a holiday here in Torino. I believe it is San Giovanni day or something close to that. A lot of the stores were closed, but I didn't see many people celebrating. I slept for almost 24 hours! I must have been very tired. I walked around a bit more today. There is a nice park several blocks from my hotel. I sat there for a while and people watched. There were also some young boys playing soccer which was entertaining. I went to a supermarket to pick up a few things and made it very obvious I was a tourist. I walked up to the register with several pieces of fruit, not realizing I was supposed to weigh them and print out the receipt. Luckily people are very nice here and a lady ... read more

We have been busy trying to transition out of the hotel (as nice as it is) to finally moving into our apartment. That has turned out to be a little bumpy but not too bad. I'll explain in a little while but first, as I promised, the Shrimp Boil party! Its been almost three weeks now since we got here officially and on the first Saturday we were invited to the home of one of the Lockheed Martin leaders here in Torino. He and his family have been here for two years already and they decided to reside in a more suburban setting. The town is called Pino Torinese and it is located east , northeast of Torino central beyond the east bank of the Po River. Torino sits on very flat terrain west of the ... read more

Day 7 27th May Bellagio – Lake Viverone via Lake Orta (the long way round) Our last evening in Bellagio was one full of electrical storms that rolled around the lakes and mountains. Hours and hours of sheet lightening and heavy rain preceded a very short night’s sleep in the lorry – safe in the knowledge that our four tyres would surely save us from uncertain death we tried to hunker down but the noise on the roof was akin to a rock drummer having a practise session. So, it was an early start and we bid farewell to Elizabeth and her husband who had been so good to us. We were loaded onto the ferry following the usual exclamations and shrugging of shoulders – this necessitated a tour of the lorry and reassurance that we ... read more

Hello everyone, Sorry for being so quite. Arrived in Italy (Milano) last Wed (18 May) in the morning. Debra met Joe (my youngest son) and me at the Malpensa AP and we took a taxi to the hotel. Spent most of the day recouperating and getting used to the new time zone. We are just now getting into that groove. Did a little site seeing on Thursday in Milano while Debra attended a couple of immigration meetings to get all the particulars finished for her and started for me. I didn't have to do much of anything and we are trusting that the laywers know what to do to help us out. Left out of Milano Centrale train station at 1600 on Thursday for a 1:30 minute ride (express train) to Torino, Porta Susa. Fianlly got ... read more

A second wind ... that's what going to bed at 9:30 pm and waking up at around 8 am will do for you ... it will give you a second wind. With only two days in Turin, I needed it so that I would be able to at least get a taste of what the city had to offer. My visit would start at nearby Piazza Statuto to see the Al Traforo del Cenisio-Frejus. It is a beautiful fountain of which I know nothing about (except that it is pretty). I just came upon it by playing around with the map that I downloaded on my iPhone (which are so ridiculously useful by the way!!) but there are no descriptions. That would take me down Via Carmine and my first church for the day (there would ... read more

I woke up this morning and I think that the hectic-ness of the last couple of weeks had finally caught up to me. I was definitely travel weary. Even after a hearty breakfast, I was still a little sluggish. I figured that I would head out and just see how it would go. In the end, I did get quite a few things done but it was a slow start. I had no sense of direction and my legs felt like lead. I knew that I was going to have a few of those days so in Turin it was. It did not take away at all from enjoying what I did manage to squeeze though. The first stop was another thing that I been looking forward to and that was the Museo Nazionale de Cinema. ... read more

Finally After two very full days of looking all over Torino we have chosen our most likely home away from home. It will most likely be an apartment in the northwest corner of La Crocetta district at 5 Via G. Bricherasio (brick-a-raz-eo) in a building on the corner of Via Vincenzo Vela and via Giovanni Bircherasio - all 3 bathrooms are being re done new as we speak (we hope to have some say as to how - but it is a rental so we don't hold out too much hope - but you have to ask and we are going to do just that). It has Central Air (a very rare find indeed)a full very new and nicely appointed kitchen (cucina) - two very large balconies and quiet garden spaces as well. Three bedrooms, 3 ... read more

Bella giorno Debi and I went to a British Pub for dinner last night. The birre (McFarlands Golden- From Ireland on tap) was great, the burgers not so much. But I suppose we couldn't expect much. We wanted a break from pure Italian and now we know (at least until we find a place that is better food-wise) not to stray too far from the local fare, which BTW has been awesome so far. We ate at about 2100 which is the norm here, and got there just in time for the last period of a football match between Roma and Ulrechia (I think) - the crowd was decidedly rooting for Roma so I guess now I will as well - They won 2-1 with a great goal by Tutti at the last second. Finally arrived in Torino. Started Thursday, 7 April at 1400. Orlando > Washingtom Dulles > Roma > Torino. Debra met me at airport at 1430 on Friday, 8 April. Took taxi to Principi Di Piemonte, our home away from home until we find an apartment. The city has its beauty and its not so great areas but overall I think it will be great here. The Alps are ever present - sort of like CoSprings but the city skyline with its old world feel certainly differentiates the view. The hotel room is comfy but we know it will get cramped soon. We are already bumping int each other, that's not so bad. I'll post some pictures of the room when we get it cleaned up right now its sort of a disaster area. We had a ... read more
