After waking up and having breakfast in La Morra we loaded up and started toward Turin. This is where the shroud of Christ is stored. In the Domo, last time I was here I was unable to see it due to the cathedral being repaired. I hope to see it this time. We arrived within 2 hours; we walked around Turin and had lunch. We saw sights but couldn’t see the Shroud. Not open, so I read about it, I’ll just have to come back another time. Bea suggest we stop at a café and have a Bicerin, you say what it’s pronounced “Bitch Er In”. It’s a coffee that has chocolate and cream. Very rich and unique to Turin. As were leaving we get lost trying to get out of the Turin, I think we ... read more

On our way to Isola Bella we passed the small but pretty fishermans island. Perhaps another day we would visit it but today it was our visit to the gardens on Isola Bella. Isola Bella is one of the Borromean Islands. The island is situated in the Borromean Gulf 400 meters from the lakeside town of Stresa . Isola Bella is 320 meters long by 400 meters wide and is entirely occupied by the Palace and its Italianate gardens. Upon Isola Bella we stumbled on the usual stalls selling leather bags, scarves of every shape and colour - scarves I cannot resist , ice creams again something I cannot resist , fridge magnets and T-shirts. And more restaurants and cafes than you could shake a stick at. The castle itself was grim and austere from the ... read more

September 2009 A MINI TRAVELOGUE by Brian William Carter CHAPTER ONE I’m not sure whose idea it was. My wife, Janet, mentioned that as it was our fifth wedding anniversary in September, it would be nice to revisit our honeymoon destination of Stresa on Lago Maggiore in north-west Italy. Well that set the old mental wheels whirring into action, and I reviewed my imaginary list of things to do (we all have one), and there it was, number three, between visiting New Zealand and a cruise round the Norwegian fjords. Drive across Europe. This seemed a perfect opportunity to tick this one off the list. Now, I have driven in Europe before, but not to any great extent. There was the day trip in January 1998, when Janet and I took advantage of a special offer ... read more

Another sunny day dawned over Lago Maggiore, and not being the type to sit still, we plotted out an active agenda for our transition day between Stresa and Firenze. Since our train didn't leave until mid-afternoon, we had plenty of time to hike part way up Mt. Mattarone, through the small hillside villages of Carciano and Somerano to be blessed with killer views of the lake. Then back down to Stresa and a bit of time spent exploring town and the back streets, which had only received a cursory glance from us so far. We boarded the Eurostar at 3:30 and experienced first class travel for the first (and probably only) time on this trip. Large comfy seats, plenty of leg-room and drinks and snacks served. The airline industry should get some pointers... The highlight of ... read more

Stress-free Stresa lived up to its reputation today, as we found out that YESTERDAY was the last day many of the tourist attractions were open, including the famous Borromean Palace and Gardens on Isola Bella, and that starting today the ferry schedule and destinations served are now much reduced. Although we were disappointed, the situation allowed for a more mellow day, and we found enough to amuse ourselves... We caught the ferry to Isola Bella, anyway, and had a look around. The island felt deserted, save for the ubiquitous booths selling flea market goods lining the street leading from the ferry. We wandered the narrow, cobblestone streets, and found the only things open were the tourist shops. Since the ferry didn’t return for an hour, we were “forced” to have a look, and ended up making ... read more

The day dawned gray and drizzly-what else is new? Despite the weather we decided to head into Interlaken a little earlier than necessary for our train connection to Brig in the south of Switzerland (where we would then connect with the train to Stresa). Thought we’d check out the town and maybe get in a little last-minute Swiss souvenir shopping. See Interlaken scenes below. We also had a bit of time to explore Brig between trains, so we headed for the historic section at the top of the town, where wandered around a bit, discovering the unique architecture of the 17th century Stockalper Palace. Back on the very crowded train, we were dismayed to see raindrops hitting the windows again, but just about the time we arrived in Stresa it stopped. (By the way, we noted ... read more
