SEPINO At first glance, this town seems like a contestant for Italy’s most unremarkable town competition. But I took a second look, and see that from its hilltop position the town looks down across rolling agricultural hills of Italy’s Molise region, and the town is well maintained showing a healthy social and economic outlook. But there’s treasure next door. We stumbled on this treasure by wandering around the countryside. Just three kilometres away from Sepino is the archaeological site of old Saepinum. Sitting amongst some farm buildings there are ruins. At first, it seemed like the ruins were fake, almost too well preserved. The roofs of the buildings are long gone and so have the upper parts of the walls, but building foundations, city walls, and roadways present as if complete. We were able to talk ... read more

Today we sadly said farewell to the Amalfi Coast line and head North East though major hay and grain farm land. We keep seeing a sign on the road to watch out for cattle but have not seen a single farm animal, looks like they are all closed to produce hay. The fields are very dry which gives a yellow colour to the landscape. We came across an Ikea shop in the middle of nowhere (just to the side of the national highway in a small town) just so out of place. Candela is a wonderful old town up on the top of a hill with wonder views over the country side. We found a wonderful B&B – A Casa Nostra (Our House) got lost getting to the property ended up a very narrow dead end ... read more

OK this is it! The big day! We have been very excited about this one since the day it was booked! Docked at Ravenna then off to Florence! The heart of the renaissance period. First a bus ride to Bologna then a winding walk through the train station to our track (19) and our coach #7 for reserved seats. At the exact scheduled time the train pulled away from the platform and such a nice smooth ride. Out of the train and into the melting heat. We are on foot from here through some winding streets to find the main cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore. Stunning red white and green marble. Sadly the Baptistry in front of the church is being renovated so the view was a little distracting. This was designated as our meeting place ... read more

October 4-8 We spent four nights just south of Sulmona in a guest apartment owned by a British couple. They live in Bristol England in the winter and then spend the rest of the year in Abruzzo where they spend time hiking, growing grapes and apples and running the guest apartment. It was a very comfortable accommodation and we enjoyed relaxing and preparing some of our own meals in the well-stocked kitchen. On our way to Sulmona we passed through the village of Capestrano. This old town sits high on a hillside and as we entered the piazza we saw that it was market day. We bought some produce from one of the venders and then she added some parsley and carrots to our bag - in all we got lettuce, three large tomatoes, 3 giant ... read more
