Day 18 : Monday 23 September 2019 : Vernazza to Santa Margharita Goodbye beautiful Cinque Terre, we’re off to Santa Margherita (€25 regional train). It was a very quick train trip just moving an hour along the coast. It’s beautiful, but it was quite a walk (uphill) and we couldn’t find the Airbnb. Found the street. Ella tried to use her limited Italian to communicate with a kind old Italian man that couldn’t speak English who went up and down the hill on his scooter looking for the number. You get to the ‘top’ of the street and around the corner, it gets steeper. I can’t explain the steepness, your knuckles hit the road as you walk up, and oh boy, don’t let that luggage go as it’s a long way back down. Up, down, up, ... read more

Today we are saying arrivederci to the Tuscany Valley and heading further north. We're really going to miss the Borgo San Luigi resort, as it was both beautiful and relaxing. Our first stop this morning is at a little town called Lucca. Lucca is a quiet little medieval walled city that looks like time forgot. It doesn't have as large of a tourist industry as Siena, so there are only a few souvenir shops, and most of the locals are just going about their daily lives. Lucca is about an hour up the road on the way to Pisa , and when we arrived, the coach was not allowed inside the city walls, so we got off the bus, just outside the entry gate. Lucca's city walls are much wider than other city walls we have ... read more

Weather in Italy!! Mamma mia!! That's what Igor, our tour director says, and today he was right! We started out early and toured the lovely town, with Igor pointing out the important places like restaurants, pharmacies, churches, enoteca(wine store), etc . We were heading to the ferry for Portofino. While Igor arranged the tickets, Allan, our art historian, proceeded to conduct a chalk talk on the sidewalk nearby. He taught us some basic architecture principles--regarding types of arches, Roman, Gothic, extensions of principles of the distribution of loads to domes and buildings with flying buttresses and stained glass windows. Then we got on the ferry for a short ride to the little gem which is Portofino, not named for a fine port, but for little dolphins. Portofino's small harbor is surrounded by shops of just about ... read more

Last breakfast on our roof top terrace before checking out and heading to the train station. We were scheduled to get the train at 9:50 to Levanto, where would change for a train to Santa Margherita. Of course our train arrived a few minutes late which meant we need to move quickly at Levanto to ensure we got our connection. We did well and had no problems getting to Santa Margherita. We arrived around 11:10 so decided we would walk the 15 minutes to the hotel, rather than get a taxi. It was actually a very pleasant walk as it was mostly flat, except for the downhill portion coming out of the train station area. The walk took us along the boardwalk of the marina and straight away Janine and I knew we were going to ... read more

It's a hot day today! We took the ferry to Porto Fino and walked around. It is a very pretty little town with some really big yachts. That afternoon we went to the beach for a swim. It is like paradise here! There is the smell of jasmine everywhere.... read more

Walked the Cinque Terre yesterday! Well, not quite all of it. The stretch between Riomaggiore and Manarola was closed due to a slip which was a pity. However we trained this part and walked to Vernazza. Only one of our group continued walking to Monterosso al Mare and it certainly wasn't me or Ad. It was just too hot (35 degrees) with little shade. We were very pleased for having done as much of it as we did. The collection of pastel shaded houses clinging to the hill sides was very pretty and we thoroughly enjoyed this day. We have just returned from today's walk. Four hours from Santa Margherita to Porto Fino - once again over hills but at least it is cooler today. This area is fabulous. Cruise ships ferrying people in to and ... read more
