We spent 2 days hiking in Cinque Terre. The trip did not start as we expected. 18th Sep happened to be a train strike. So we could not get the train to go from La Spieza. After waiting hours at the train station with lot of mixed information, we joined another couple and took a taxi to the first village. The day was looking cold and rain. We bought our tickets and headed out on the hike. The beginning was really nice. The hiking trail huggs the sea coast. The sea was really stormy this day and it made the hike lot more beautiful. As we headed out of Riomaggio, some slight rain started falling. We took a leasurely hike to next village Manarola. By now, it was a good drizzle. We were also very tired. ... read more

Today we set out to hike the rigorous, 5 hour hike through all 5 villages. Starting at Riomaggiore, we look Lover’s Lane to Mangola. The walls are covered by people’s signatures, couples that have come to Cinque Terre. It’s also called Lover’s Lane because couples put a lock on the fence and throw the key into the sea. The path between Mangola and Corniglia was closed, so we hoped a 2 minute train ride. From there, we had to climb over 300 steep steps (so hot) to reach the village. It made me wonder how , or if, people in wheelchairs visit the place. Moving onto the next town, “ BEACH” was scribbled on a rock with sharpie pen, which is a little shady but it seemed like a good idea at the time. We didn’t ... read more

Another travel day… Needed a cappacino badly once we got to Ventimiglia, Italy, which is a town just over the border. Ordering was quite difficuly because we know absolutely no Italian. We got on the train to Genova and shared a cabin with 4 Italian guys about our age who were heading home to Milan after a 1 month backpacking/camping tour of Europe. They were quite animated and talked very fast, which started to make me nervous about being in a country where I don’t know the language. They told us a funny story from their trip: in Barcelona, they were camping and had put their shoes just outside the tent. In the middle of the night, 2 of the guys woke up individually and put their shoes back on so they wouldn’t get stolen, purely ... read more

Well, well, well, it seems that I have mildly failed on the Blog expose of mine. Or it could be thought of as a success that I was having SUCH a good time that I just couldn’t fit it the time. Or we could think about the reality of the situation…who really thought that I was going to make it all the way through? If any of you said yes, Kudos to you! As of now I am recovering from a violent fever that left me sleepless for two days, so while everyone is out downtown for our last week, I am a pale, medicated student. As awful as it sounds, this is the first time I have been alone since my arrival, and my alone time is greatly valued. Therefore I look at tonight as ... read more

I don't remember what my last post was about, so I'll just start from Friday. We had our midterm (which I got a 96 on!) and we watched a weird movie (which I just remembered I told you about). Then we just spent time in Florence's center until dinner. For dinner we made pasta with red sauce and about 6 of us gathered with our individual dishes to have a semblance of a group dinner. Then pretty much everyone went out to a club called Red Garter, where there happens to be karaoke, but I'll get to that later. Saturday was the first day I got to sleep in since the second or third week, I believe. It was great. Once Liana and I finally got up and dressed, we met Sarah at the food market ... read more

Hi Folks! Time to catch you up on our comings and goings in Italy! Our first port in Italy was Livorno, from where all the excursions to Tuscany and Liguria departed. This time the blog is only about Jim and I in Cinque Terre. I will do a separate blog for M&K and the T’s in Florence. Jim and I hopped on the bus to the Cinque Terre. These are 5 tiny Italian Riveriera towns where the buildings hang precariously off the sea cliffs or perch on top of steeply terraced hillsides. We only visited 3 of them. Manarola, Riomaggiore and Vernazza. Manarola was in my opinion the most beautiful. The weather was mild and cool with the hint of rain hanging in the air. This made the cliff and vineyard vistas even more dramatic as ... read more

I woke up early -- by 6:15 am -- so that I could do an early morning hike before the girls woke up. My plan was to take the train from Monterosso to Vernazza, then take the sentiero (path) to Monterosso. By catching the 7:10 am train to Vernazza, I would have 2 hours to get back to Monterosso, wake up the girls prepare the bags for checkout and shower. I had a bit of an adventure on my way to Vernazza. I told you earlier that you have to have a ticket for the train/park access. Each ticket is for a single day, and I had purchased 3 tickets for the day before. I intended to buy 3 more tickets at the station in Monterosso before catching the 7:10 am train. But when I arrived ... read more

We arrived in La Spezia just as the sun was setting. It was pretty easy place to find. Out hotel was a very small place tucked up amongst some rather rough looking housing blocks. It was right next to a school and it had a restaurant, which is great as they were a little hard to find in La Spezia. The railway station was only a 15 minute walk and the first of the Cinque Terra villages were only a 10 minute train ride through a tunnel. We bought a two day pass which was great as we didn't need to queue up for tickets. The ticket covered unlimited use of the trains and the walking tracks. Well worth while if you want to make the most of your time here. We got a train ... read more
