Cinque Terre on the western coast of Italy 8 & 9 October 2013 Cinque Terre is a stretch of coast line on the northern section of the western coast of Italy. It is known for its stunning scenery of the Mediterranean coastline against the cliffs and ancient farmland of 5 villages which provide a lovely experience when wandering around the little streets. There are no cars in the villages and the only way to get to most of the villages is by train or walking up steep steps over headlands. The 2 days we spent walking and training up and down this stretch of coast line was magnificent weather. On the 1st day we spent all afternoon, until 8.00pm exploring Riomaggiore, the furtherest town (caught a train to this village) then caught a train back to ... read more

Off to the Cinque Terre again but this time planning to visit the towns by train and wearing comfortable footwear! Perfect sunny weather again. Took the train to Riomaggiore, the furthest of the towns & enjoyed a walk around the town. We found a bar/café with a great view over the marina & stopped for lunch. Back to the station to catch the train to the next town, Manarola, but the train took off and went through the next 3 towns without stopping – apparently it was a train that was running behind schedule but no explanation from the station announcer. Never mind – we were back in Monterosso where we finished our walk yesterday. Another walk around the town and along the beach was very pleasant and, after a coffee, (very good for a change!), ... read more

We checked out the local market in Levanto prior to boarding a train to Corniglia, the third of the Cinque Terre towns. Our intention was to walk from Corniglia to Vernazza (1½hours), then from Vernazza to Monterosso (2½ hours), then catch a train back to Levanto from Monterosso. After alighting from the train in Corniglia, we had a 20 min walk up steep stairs just to get to the town before the walk even started! We had lunch in a pizzeria with amazing view of the sea prior to heading off. We also had chats with a few people who’d just completed the walk in the opposite direction…they were exhausted! Most sections of the walk were steep and rough but the beautiful coastline scenery and the sights of villages appearing hugging the rocks made it worthwhile. ... read more

I spent the first week of September in the Cinque Terre (literally, the “Five Lands”) region of Italy located south of Genoa in the Liguria region. A UNESCO world heritage site, the Cinque Terra National Park is composed of coastline, cliffs, terraced hillsides and five coastal villages (Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore) that are connected by trails, trains and boats. Having read the Lonely Planet and Le Routard guide books about the Cinque Terre, I decided to follow their suggestion and book a hotel (which I found on the hotels.com site) in the city of La Spezia. From here, I could take day trips by train, boat and on foot into the five villages. This turned out to be a great solution because not only was my hotel more modestly priced than in ... read more

So, this morning we head off to Cinque Terre but with poor access to the internet, we are not as set up as we want to be. No matter. The info centre doesnt open till 10 so we are off to the stazione at 9.30, and throw ourselves on the mercy of the ticket man at the station. In broken english he couldn't have been more helpful. Armed with a day ticket in the national park and return tickets to get there, we head off - although we didnt know where to start. We neglected to validate our national park tickets so had to get off the train - and of course, couldnt get back on again. While we waited for the next, we bumped into 2 Brissy guys who had been there for 2 days. ... read more

Interesting start to our last morning in Nice. Left the apartment to find some breakfast. Went the opposite direction of the last couple of days thinking we would explore some new territory. Bad move…..no shops, restaurants or boulangeries! Turn around go back to our old stomping ground and took a new street. Oops….cafe au lait only - best and strongest we've had on this trip and then across the street to the boulangerie. Pain au Chocolat for me, sausage rolls for Trev. Got back to the apartment to eat them and Trev realized that "sausage" was actually "hot dog wiener" HE HATES HOT DOGS!! Wrapped up in pastry though he said they were pretty decent. Spent some time confirming our plan of attack for the trains to Corniglia and found a place to actually book them…tried ... read more
