Ferrera seemed to be close and there was a trip organised by the school. Nobody showed up. So on the Sunday, I went by myself, a 4.90 euro train trip. I managed to stamp the wrong ticket, and get all the times of the return trains wrong. That didn't stop it being a most memorable visit. Ferrera is consistently voted into the top 3 most liveable cities in Italy. It is not hard to see why. It has about 130,000 inhabitants, and all of them ride bicycles. This city doesn't have car parks, it has bicycle parks. This is the city with the most bicycle journeys undertaken by its inhabitants. It is walkable, surprisingly touristfree, and for any event likely to draw a crowd, free buses are laid on. On the 3rd Sunday ... read more

This is Italy, so all the men are good looking and clean and well dressed. Every one of these gorgeous creatures would be considered "metrosexual" and his sexual orientation very suspect in Australia.....mmm....most of them are married, and ride bicycles with baby seats, just in case you don't get the message. There is a belief in the land of Oz that Italians are fat. Not true...not here, anyway. They walk and ride bicycles everywhere I tossed a coin and went to Italy to learn Italian, Portugal and Portuguese was too near to the awful kids and much worse monitors in this year's camp. As a teacher of English, there are a few things that are constants in a good place to learn English. The same should apply to Italian I thought. The city should be small and ... read more

Every now and then a person finds themselves in the right place at the right time whilst travelling and a unique experience happens. One such memorable night came together for Kris and I while we were in Bologna. The trip up to that point had been a success. We had climbed towers, drank cheap cold red wine, and followed Bologna's porticoed streets up in the hills to see the church and the view. Unfortunately this blog is a bit overdue (2 months, acually) and I have forgotten the names of some of the sights. We also took a train to Venice to enjoy the tiny streets, the cramped (yet charming) restaurants and sit in the back of a water bus much longer than our tickets allowed. However, although Venice really is a one-of-a-kind city, I know ... read more

It’s too fast. Too fast. I can’t control it. I know it won’t do any good to try and brake. It’s too fast. The blue Renault is 20 cm from me and I have no control over the speed!!!! Never again I’m gonna stay at the driver seat after loading a car on the train. The train was fast, it was dark, and all I wanted was to slow it down… Never again!!! Made it to Italy. I was driving as fast as I could - about 80 KMH. The truck’s drivers saw me only as a minor problem if they saw me, driving at least twice faster then I was. Some of them found the fact that a woman is driving this funny slow thing funny and kept trying to get my attention. Sometimes, a ... read more

So it appears that I have been absent for a while. Let me fill you in a little on what I’ve been up to. Let’s start with the most fun part. Last week I went to Italy to visit my darling parental units. Stupidly I chose to fly out of Paris on the day of the grève. Grèves (commonly known as strikes) occur often in France, but this one was supposedly particularly bad as all the transportation unions in the country were staging a strike on the same day. This basically means that in Paris, none of the buses or the metros or the RER (suburban trains) were running, however, business is as usual. The whole of Paris just walks to work, or borrows their kid’s scooter, or puts on a jogging suit and gets up ... read more

Ciao tutti! I have some fabulous updates about last weekend, which was spent in Rimini. Rimini is a town on the eastern coast of Italy, in the region Emilia Romagna (known for its cheese and its capital, Bologna). Rimini is a beach town on the Adriatic Sea, so it was kind of cool to be able to say that I swam in both the Mediterranean Sea and the Adriatic Sea within a week. Rimini is supposedly a really happening town for nightlife and clubbing, but even though it was 80 degrees and sunny it was still off-season and therefore most of the clubs and a lot of the hotels were closed. But that’s okay, because we made our own fun! We didn’t make plans to go to Rimini until Friday afternoon, so instead of rushing out ... read more

After the sprint round the Uffizi we bumbled off to Ostiglia which is the ancestral home of Dean's grandfather, and something of a pilgrimage for him as he was very fond of his grandfather. He had attempted the previous night to ring Ricciardo - a relative who owns a hotel in Ostiglia- in order to book us in and alert him to our impending visit. This he was not able to do due to difficulties with Italian Telecom (he says) - OR Ricciardo's receptionist - he wasn't quite sure which....Anyway, we decided we would give it a go anyway so away we went, turning off the big motorway into the countryside, not quite sure of what we would find..... Well, it turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip (and my, doesn't your Italian ... read more

Europe » Italy » Emilia-Romagna » Parma August 1st 2007

An adventure. Sunday night Kim and I encountered a couple, trio, of inebriated, forward, and persistent English speaking older gentlemen. The one who had his eyes all over me offered us a ride to Parma. Kim decided we couldn’t resist because it would save us travel fare and I couldn’t argue against it strongly; even though they gave me the creeps. We were ready and waiting for the guy at 8. By a quarter to 9 we turned into the house, bade Iris farewell and walked down the hill to Gotra to catch the 9:25. In the house, in front of the seven guests, Iris put her hand condescendingly on my head and wisely told me to “Never trust Italian men.” I pondered this thoroughly as we walked down the dewey green hills filled with bright ... read more

There were 7 guests from France. Beautifully dressed ladies, one who played piano and guitar, and serenaded Kim and I as we seeded the ground with carrots, lettuces, and radishes. It was hard work setting up the irrigation system; crawling on our hands and knees to measure the perfectly straight lines. In a little time the plants will sprout and grow vegetables to sustain Iris and Gianluca, their guests, and clients. I was in a terrible mood and the only thing to keep my mind off of it was to imagine the ground and rake were my personal zen garden. Two Australian boys came and infused a light gay air in the camper. We shared travel spots and stories of life on the road with WWOOF. Brad and Paul, a lovely couple were making the WWOOFing ... read more
