As I am rather busy I just want to let you know what I've been up to, and what there is to come on this blog once I find some good time (right now it is almost midnight and I'm dead tired so I can't finish all the blogs right now) Wine Tasting -- flavors of Sicily (best meal I've had in Italy... and it lasted until 2:30 AM) Two weekends ago I went to Umbria with the program... we saw the cities of Perugia, Assisi, Spello and Cortona (which is actually in Tuscany) Last weekend I went to Paris and Dijon with my friend Luis. It was a blast... and the pictures are numerous! Will get to that, especially after I get all the correct spellings of everything we saw from Luis... This weekend is ... read more

Laura the Liar Italy is turning me into a liar. When I meet people I tell them that I am here to “study”. This is clearly not true as I attend uni for two hours on Mondays and Tuesdays, do not understand a word, frequently leave early, and even more frequently don’t even show up due to “commitments” in Milan, Florence, the Alps, or my local café. But there are also plenty of other lies, particularly to my roommates. This is not because I am a bad person, it is more a case of an inability to communicate properly in Italian, and also sometimes laziness, when saying “I understand” or “si” is so much easier than saying “no, because…” and then explaining something really complicated. For this reason one of my housemates thinks I have a ... read more

Moran Freeman narrating "Yes, the pilgrimage. Today, being March 13th 2008, was the day that we would arrive at the place where it all began..." Disclaimer: Sorry ladies, there's lots of cars and driving in this one. Hoo boy I do love driving! Salzburg (Austria) to Venice (Italy) was the next leg of our trip. 500-odd k's of long highways and longer tunnels. There is still lots of snow on the mountains and I still struggled to keep my eyes on the road. The highways carved between mountains like an ice-skaters blade, seperating everything in its path. Where the mountains got in the way, the Austrians proved their tunnel-building skills with some 8km-long monsters. I can never get sick of this! All these countries - except Germany - tend to have motorway speed limits of 130kph ... read more

Ferrara, Day 1 The bus ride took about 5 hrs, and when we finally got here, we went straight to touring. This lasted until around 4pm, so we wre all crabby and tired since we didn't get lunch. In Ferrara, we visited the city walls, which were necessary for protection in the middle ages since Ferrara is located in a flat, lowland area much like nothern Indiana; the Palazzo Schifanoia, the d'Este playhouse; the Cimitero Israelitico, or Jewish Cemetery, where Gorgio Bassani's tomb is located; and briefly visited the d'Este Castle and Duomo in the city's historical center. Ferrara is a much smaller city than Rome or Firenze, and this difference is very noticeable in all aspects of city life. For example, during the day the city seems like a ghost town, probably because everyone is ... read more

Hello everyone! So I've been here for almost a month and thought I'd write and let you know a bit about my life in Bologna! The tearful farewell back in January turned out to be an anti-climax because a suicidal bird decided to fly into our plane’s engine, delaying our plane for three hours. Upon arriving in Hong Kong we discovered we’d missed our flight to Munich. So after a great day in Hong Kong, we left for Paris, and after getting kicked off a plane from Paris to Bologna, we were allowed on another one and finally made it to Bologna on Saturday, 66 hours after leaving Sydney. House hunting! Looking for accomodation was a great way to learn about the city. Bologna is a gorgeous but tiny city enclosed in a wall (it only ... read more

Ah so cooking lessons on Monday nights... we basically get together, are taught by a cook that looks like a surfer boy straight out of California, then we enjoy lots of aperitivo, and then we eat whatever we just made. It has been a lot of fun. The first night we made Cappalacci which is the Ferrarese specialty, which is acorn squash/pumpkin pseudo-raviolis. Other lessons have included gnocci, cotoletta (a breaded veal filet), and melanzane alla parmigiana (eggplant parmigiana). Always a fun night which it randomly spotted with Fabio accompanying me, Riccardo (one of our student directors) and his jokes, and random host-family members (especially the adorable lil' brother of David, one of the students in my program). Don't worry, when I get back I'll make sure to make some of these for you! ... read more

So yesterday Caleb and I (the two token Americans) went to a real Italian soccer game with our new Italian buds. Parma vs AC Milan @ home here in Parma. Parma is kind of an underdog team in the league but # 22 on ac Milan, Kaka was voted the best player in the world last year by helping Italy win the world cup...so it was very cool to watch them play. Fortunately and Unfortunately the final score of the game was a 0-0 tie, but at least Parma didnt lose!! We were standing in the SERIOUS fan section of the stadium so we stood up on our seats the entire game and listened to these crazy people scream and chant their various Parma songs. It got so ridiculously cold I couldnt feel my feet. It ... read more

Just a quick bit about my Valentine's Day... so Fabio cooked for me an EXCELLENT pasta dish with clams... the recipe: in a pot, add some olive oil, chopped garlic, peperoncini (hot pepper flakes). After some bit, add the clams. Add some white wine and cover to let them steam. After they are opened up... they are cooked and ready for some freshly cooked and drained angel hair pasta. Mix all together and serve --- absolutely scrumptious! We also dined on prosciutto crudo with bread and cheese. We were going to eat salad, but we decided to skip it and go straight to the dessert: pineapples, toast with nutella, spumante, espresso, and baci perugina. Che bella giornata di San Valentino!!! ... read more

Well, nothing says a bounce back into happy reality like a gorgeous waiter that doesn't speak English. Last night, my friends and I went to a bar/restaurant called I Merli (the crows). Last night was the second night in a row that we had all gone there...reasonable prices, good food, etc. Anyway, there is this one waiter there, who's name i've learned is Francesco (doesnt that just have an illuminating ring to it!) who was talking to me about my stupid drunk friends who I repeatedly appologized for. Anyway, apparently he thought I was funny because tonight he remembered me and even bought me a glass of wine! how nice....He asked me how I learned Italian and then I proceeded to tell him about my background in spanish...and THEN he started speaking to me in SPANISH! ... read more

This is the first of many assignments my program has given us, I think I did a damn good job Dear Friends and Family, Having never been to Italy before, my preconception of the Italian landscape and architecture of Parma were based off images made familiar by classic Italian artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo. Before coming to Parma, my only first hand encounter with true Italian culture was at the Giovanni’s Pizza place I frequent back at home. That being said, actually arriving here to see the multicolored stacked houses and winding cobblestone streets for myself was a sight both surreal and extraordinary. While Parma is a relatively quiet city in comparison to Italian metropolises like Rome or Florence, it is by no means lackluster in beauty and culture. The town is split ... read more
