Naples is the closest airport to Sorrento, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast area. Liz and I hopped a local flight down to Naples Fri afternoon to meet Paula in Ischia for the weekend. Crazy how a little cheapo 2hr flight from Paris and you can be in the beautiful Mediterranean off Italy for the weekend. We had a slice of pizza in the airport, which turned out to be amazing, and our only slice in Naples, the supposed birth place of pizza. Naples has a reputation of being a crime-ridden, poor, and dirty city. I can't offer anything to disagree. We were swindled in the cab as most tourists are (despite the clear posting of prices, he insisted it was old and that there were extra fees and taxes. BS). If I had it to do ... read more

I hadn't meant to devote my day to the Giro, but Ischia basically shut down to everything except the race. Buses were not serving any part of the island where the race was for the whole day apparently. So, I was stranded, but that made the day easier. Ischia is a sweet resort town, with thermal spas which we unfortunately couldn't visit easily. We instead walk in the shopping district, eat gelato, and partake of the crowds. This was a team time trial, so each team starts together on their own, spaced 3 minutes apart. A row of young ladies stand on the stage, and their job is to hold the bikes while the cyclists perch at attention on their bikes on the countdown. Further down the road a policeman on a motorcycle waits until given ... read more

Bagged myself a boat ticket to the island of Ischia which I have never visited before and was very much looking forward to. Picking up a map I began a nice long and slow walk from the port through the main streets into the island. There were beautiful plants and flowers lining the shops and cafes. Huge amounts of shops sell ceramics which are made on the island; I would have loved to have taken them home. Having a light lunch to refresh myself I then headed back to the bus station and picked up a small bus along the north coast of the island to Casamiccola with its pretty coloured houses and park. Then further along to lacco at the next bay. Lovely hills surrounded it but the most important site is the blast of ... read more

Here we are in Ischia and finally were able to get online. This is a very strange place but the bruschetta is wonderful! The service industry definitely caters to Italian tourists and does not appreciate our inability to speak the language. Everyone stares at us all the time and does not seem to care when we notice. Tropo caldo! The sun has been wonderful, if not a bit overwhelming. It must be 40 degrees everyday and it is intense. Otherwise it has been lovely to relax at the pool. We visited a thermal park called Negombo and enjoyed a sandy beach day with tropical drinks. Tomorrow we are on our way to Switzerland to visit Jody's family and see the alp and their farm. I'm looking forward to it. For now we will enjoy our last ... read more

Howdy! I survived my first weekend trip. Shocking, I know! We traveled to Ischia, and it was a weekend of firsts. Now begins the story of Katie's Ischia trip. We left the JFRC (John Felice Rome Center) at 7 AM on Friday morning. Some of you are aware of how much I am not a morning person, so you can imagine just how pleasant of an experience that was. Getting to Ischia was an experience in itself. It began with a taxi ride to the metro station (subway), a subway ride to Termini (one of Rome's two main train stations), a train to Naples, a bus ride from the train station at Naples to the port, a ferry ride to the island of Ischia, and a bus ride to Forrio where our hostel was located. From ... read more

Friday afternoon and we were flying from Gatwick to Napoli. Summer in London has been shocking so we were looking forward to some Italian hot weather. We sat in the departure lounge waiting to board and Ian Wright walked past! For those that haven't heard of him, he's a well known ex-soccer player! We arrived at around 9 and took a taxi to the Grand Hotel Europa in the city centre. Taxi was 43 euros, we discovered later it should have been more like 15! Great introduction to Italian driving - almost airbourne on more than one occasion, as we sped along at 140 kph in 70 zone! Hotel was very nice. We were on the 3rd floor. Unfortunately, the lift only went to the 2nd floor. Feeling quite guilty as the elderly porter struggled with ... read more

I wasn't even suppossed to be here. I was kidding myself, self trickery to make me think that i could afford to take a 'vacation' within another 'vacation'. I did follow her though, all the way to bloody Ischia. "I'm taking you to an island, off the coast of Napoli. You're going to love it, you can't say no." I supposse that random invitations are the best thing when encountered during travelling. Fearful at first, I know now that one must leap. And so I did, and landed firmly on the platform of a ferry leaving busy Port Beverello in Napoli, heading for sunny Ischia. To be perfectly honest, the only thing that I remember most clearly...are the ferry boats to and from the island. Its not just a saying, whatever REALLY happened on the ... read more
