Before leaving Northern Ireland, we did not stop in BELFAST, only getting a tour from the bus; seeing a Queen Victoria statue and the Europa Hotel, the most bombed hotel in Belfast and only a couple of streets. I would have loved to walked around but we only got off the bus for a pit stop. Pity. Next was south to DOWNPATRICK where we saw the grave of St. PATRICK (buried in 461) on Cathedral Hill, DOWN CATHEDRAL and a former jail where we went inside and saw the cells. NEWBRIDGE HOUSE was our last stop getting a guided tour. It was built in the 1740's for the Archbishop of Dublin and still contains most of the original furniture. There was also a courtyard and a farm on the grounds. Then off to the largest city ... read more

In the early evening, we arrived in the resort of Bundoran passing some more pretty dark green mountain scenery of Benbulben. The rain had stopped as we arrived at the Great Northern Hotel which also had a golf course. Our rooms were so cute, well for a female anyways. Leanne's and I shared a room and we had pink walls and a view of part of the golf course while Suzi's room had pink lamps, dark green walls, a red phone and a view of the Atlantic. We had some time to explore around the hotel before dinner, so the 3 of us went down to the rocky shore after an earlier storm and walked around. We were out on a rock when high tide started to come in, so we high tailed it out of ... read more

Monday started out with no rain to visit KYLEMORE ABBEY. Built in the 1860's, this was acquired by the Benedictine nuns in 1920 when they left Belgium in World War I and now houses a secondary girls boarding school. It was rather breathtaking when we pulled in the parking lot. I tried to get my camcorder to tape but no luck. I don't know what what was wrong & it ticked me off . So I lugged around a broken camcorder for the next 14 days with only 3 seconds of video from the cliffs. The abbey looked like a castle, which it originally was named and sits on the shores of the lake. The silhouette of the hills and the abbey was a mirror image in the lake. Just beautiful and so peaceful! Inside we ... read more

After an early 7:30am breakfast, our bus departed an hour later for the CLIFFS OF MOHER. They rise 668 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. On a clear day you can see across to the ARAN ISLANDS but we had a cloudy day with a little bit o' rain. There is a castle like structure built in 1835, at the top called O'BRIEN'S TOWER. We were lucky enough to see a rainbow in the distance of the Aran Islands, which we could see a little bit. My 1st Irish rainbow! We walked around and bought some postcards at the visitor center. It was crowded here but very majestic. Our bus then took us up the CLAIRE COAST and also taking in the BURREN. We stopped for pictures at CORKSCREW HILL which is exactly what it is named. ... read more

Continuing on our Sunday tour, we got to spend a couple hours in the city of GALWAY after learning about the LYNCH STONE and how Mayor James Lynch Fitzstephen hanged his son for murder. I guess you could say he was partial! Galway was a clean, pretty city and it was afternoon, so the streets were busy with a diverse crowd even though we had some more rain. There was a street performer who didn't move for the longest time. I almost thought he was a statue. We mostly window shopped. CONNEMARA MARBLE FACTORY, our last stop had some pretty jewelry with different colored stones. On our way to Clifden, we passed the famous BRIDGE where a scene from "the Quiet Man" was filmed. We stayed overnight in the fishing town of CLIFDEN at the STATION ... read more
