Ireland the North 2. Dundalk An overcast day with better weather than forecast with the odd spitting and a few heavier showers demanding my cape escape its moorings on my rear rack. Quite an uneventful ride through rolling dairy country, although some may say that some of the hills are definitely not rolling. One nice descent was followed by a rumbling sound from my front wheel which was found to be a puncture. Luckily it was not raining and a quick wheel removal showed that it was caused by a thorn, which was duly removed by my teeth since I had no pliers. I got out my spare tube only to find it had a Schrader valve which will not fit. It must have been sent to me by mistake as I never use schrader. Lorna ... read more

Ireland the North 1 Dundalk Still heading south today to Dundalk in light cloud and very brief shows of the sun. Luckily the wind is moderate and mostly not causing much stress. The countryside is undulating in cow country with beef and quite a few dairy farms plus the odd sheep farm. We notice some of the dairy herds are quite big as we wend our way around the spiders web of country lanes. For our mid morning break we stopped at Cafe Nero at the Quays Shopping Centre on the way out of the bustling city of Newry. This lead us out of town alongside the Newry Canal. The Victoria Lock is where ther is a brief history of the last ships out of the port of Newry almost 50 yrs ago. South if this ... read more

Dear All Greetings on this my third and final blog entry of my trip to Ireland, country number 100. My application has been accepted, and I am now officially a fully-fledged member of the TCC, with badge and certificate to show for it – yay!! Thank you Ireland for being such a lovely country, but also for being such a nice country to make it to this number. It is interesting to see that having travelled pretty much the world, it is our closest neighbour which ultimately helped me reach this goal. This has made Ireland really quite special to me. My last full day on the Emerald Isle was another very enjoyable one, heading even further north than the day before. Swords turned out to be such a good town to base myself in for ... read more

XClare The next few days I stay on the Burren, in Kilfenora and Coisceam, near Caron with two different friends The Burren is a huge limestone pavement covering a chunk of Country Clare. I visit the Cliffs of Moher, where crowds of tourists pour out of buses from as far afield as Dublin and wander round the exhibition, or peer over the cliffs at the stacks, and strata, and height. Apparently it's the most visited tourist site in Ireland. It's impressive how the cliffs were formed, from deposits at a river delta from when Ireland was in tropical climes. Bernie took me for a drive to see a local portal stone dalmen, a burial cairn called Poulnabrone, and for a walk along a beach covered in fabulous interesting stones. I have a collection to take home ... read more

Well hello again! Yes, we have been bad bloggers for quite a while now and to answer the question "where have you been?" the answer is simple. We have been home since May 31st--sort of. It seems that we have terminal jetlag and really do not exist in any known time zone. However, we do seem to be functioning a little bit better the past few days, so hold onto your ales, we are travelling across Ireland today! After yet another lovely breakfast in the sunroom at Lawcus Farm, we pack up and, amidst a trail of hugs, kisses, and promises to return soon, we are on the move. Today we are heading north from County Kilkenny to Drogheda in County Louth. Our friends Niamh and Pierce, along with their fine family of little boys, are ... read more

In researching for this trip, I learned about a World Heritage Site called Newgrange, located roughly half way between Dublin and Dundalk. It is a man-made mound with an inner chamber that pre-dates the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge in England. I thought that it was worth a visit. Wow! The visit experience could have justified the entire trip. I had read that tours can fill up for the day during the summer, so I headed over to the site first thing this morning. You can't go directly there, but have to start at a visitor center. At the center a receptionist asked if I wanted BOTH the Newgrange and Knowth tours - obviously I had not researched this place carefully enough. I took both. We started at Knowth, which was built after Newgrange, but is ... read more

Good direct flight from O'Hare to Dublin. Left on time - arrived early - had nice college age couple as seatmates - even the journey through customs wasn't long or trying. Very pleasant start to the trip. Rented a car from Budget - once again quick and easy. It's a Nissan MICRA - and it is tiny. Considering the narrowness of the roads, that is a BIG plus. Driving on the left side of the road is not really a hard adjustment. Trying not to scrape the side curb on back roads, or swipe parked cars, is the big challenge for me. I did get 100% zero deductible insurance on the rental, so I'm not too worried. The road from Dublin to Dundalk is very direct. I took a diversion through Dunleer and Ardee on the ... read more

Friday began with a full pack march to the bus to Drogheda. A pleasant walk without a pack, we were all glad it was our last long trek with the bags! Ruth Heaney had a wonderful day arranged for us. We dropped luggage at Anne Cassidy's and picked up her daughter Sophie and headed off for lunch in the town centre. Then a guided tour of this old medieval town. Shopping closed the afternoon followed by a dinner prepared at the Scout Centre by Drogheda Guides and Guiders. Ruth further arranged luggage transfers as well as our dorm and breakfast and Sophie spent the night too.... read more

We had great intentions of heading down to Wicklow, south of Dublin for a drive today but woke this morning to freezing winds and rain. We were told it might not be the best day for it as Wicklow is very cold and windy on a great day due to the mountains in the area. We decided to head a little north of us to a town called Dundalk just a few kms from the coast and then dove back south on a very beautiful scenic coast road back to Rathkenny. The Irish Sea is a beautiful and a very haunting sight. I can imagine it very unforgiving and very cold. We drove through a tiny little town, which I think might be closely linked to a very good friend of mine...... The town is called ... read more

Today is the final day in Ireland. We checked out of our last B&B in Dundalk and are now heading back to Dublin and staying at the Radisson Blu near the airport (it is basically in the airport). Today we have a few more places that we want to hit before we turn in the car and are done with our driving around. So we woke up and decided to head back through Newgrange onto Trim. Trim houses Trim Castle which is rather ‘famous’, if you will, because Braveheart was filmed there, also it is very old. It is the largest 1172 Anglo Norman castle. However, again we struggled with the fact that no castles are open before Easter. When we arrived we went to the Trim tourist place where we were told it was open ... read more
