Just a quick update. I'm on the computer that belongs to the B&B, so I can't upload any pictures. It was quite an exciting few days. Taelyr placed 3rd (Bronze Medal) in her Solo event!!! I thought Sacha was going to pass out. She also received a Silver Medal in the 3 Baton event. Rumor has it that she placed 4th in the 2 Baton event. The Group (Music In Me) won the Gold Medal!!! ALl the Mom's cried. It has been 15 months of hard work by the girls, and hundreds of hours of volunteer and fundraising by the parents....well worth it after that performance, it was incredible. I'm getting emotional even now when remembering it. We did purchase videos of the opening ceremonies, solo event, medal ceremonies, and the group performance in case anyone ... read more

Early (and long) day today, first day of competition. It looks like Taelyr has made it through to the second round in all 3 events today. There are some pretty complicated calculations that come into play so at this point we are making an 'educated guess'. In the Solo routine, she needed to finish in the top 10 of 54 girls, which is pretty impressive. In 2 baton I think it was more like 24 girls, and in her 3 baton routine, there is only herself and one other girl competing at that level. So the good news is that she will come home with a medal in the 3 baton discipline ;) The second round, and the group events are tomorrow. They don't allow any photography, but I did sneak a couple of the processional. ... read more

Practice today is from 3-7. I think all the girls are ready for this competition to start. Sacha's family arrived this morning. They are staying at a B&B in downtown Limerick. They went off to The Cliffs of Moher today, while the rest of us went downtown to see The Hunt Museum. We tossed around the idea of going down to the Mitchelstown Caves while Taelyr was practicing, but she spoke up and said that she'd like to go too, so I think we will stay with our original plan of going down there on Friday. The Hunt Museum was interesting for me, although a bit boring for the kids (and Mom's) I think. They have over 2000 items from a wide range of dates. A few items from 4000BC up to more modern things from ... read more

The training schedule is getting in the way of sight-seeing ;) Yesterday, Taelyr had a team meeting at 11AM and then training from 3-6PM. Kendall and I went swimming. Went to the pub last night for some "Irish music", but they close up pretty early around here. Training today is from 3-7PM so we got up a bit earlier and went to see The King John Castle right here in Limerick, then we walked to St. Mary's Cathedral. The Cathedral was built in 1168 and is the oldest structure in the UK that is still used for it's original purpose. It is an awe inspiring building, I think mostly because it's still all intact. There was a service going on at the time we were there and the bells were ringing and everything. The castles are ... read more

Today we went south to Adare. There are 3 very old churches there, and the Adare (Desmond) Castle. The castle was started in about 1200 and was occupied up to the middle 1500's. Still raining.... read more

Our last day! The sentiment today was that none of us wanted to go home. Chris made us a lovely breakfast and we packed our things and got ourselves on the road to the airport. This trip has been wonderful. I was lucky to share this experience with my cousin Amy and my mom. We traveled around approximately ¾ of the country and when we returned the car, we had driven 1272 miles in two weeks. Ireland is a beautiful, welcoming country and I feel like it is my second home! I loved the opportunity to see family and the beautiful scenary. We decided that we will plan to return within the next 5 years.... read more

Today Kendall and I drove about 1 hour west to go to Killkee. There is an indoor waterpark there, and swimming is high on Kendall's list of cool things to do. It was the first day of training here for Taelyr. She seems to be okay after it all, but she did comment that it was "dumb". It was threating rain all day, and is finally fully pouring right now.... read more

Today we are going to the shopping mall. I need to set up cell phones for us. Tonight is the "Canadian Team Banquet", I think I'll try a Guiness :) I know everyone talked about this before-hand, but it is very expensive over here. 60 Euro (~$100) at Pizza Hut for the 4 of us last night. Gasoline is about 1.30 Euro per liter (about $2.15). -------------------- Just back from the Banquet. Some fun "team building" stuff. Dinner was okay, Guiness was very good. First day of practice tomorrow. 9AM-2PM, we've been told that it will be 'grueling'. I'm sure Taelyr is happy about that. ;)... read more

Today we took a bus tour West of Limerick to Bunratty Castle and then on to The Cliffs of Moher. The Castle was built in 1425. It was restored in the 50's and 60's and contains many period tapestries and furniture. Some of the tables and chairs are 600-800 years old. The Cliffs of Moher are easily one of the most impressive natural sights that I have ever seen. The pictures don't really do them justice because it's hard to determine the scale. They run up the west coast for about 7 or 8 miles and rise over 700' out of the ocean in spots. Driving is a bit easier today, the GPS has really been helpful, especially at the 'Roundabouts' (of which there are hundreds), because it tells you which exit to take before you ... read more

It was a long day today. We were "upgraded" on our flight from Toronto to Dublin, so that was nice. None of us were really able to get any productive sleep though. After arriving in Dublin, we then got on a bus for the 3.5hr ride across Ireland to Limerick. The University of Limerick campus is very nice, although the rooms leave a little to be desired. Once we dropped our bags off, Kendall and I hopped in a Taxi to the Shannon Airport in order to Pick up our rental car. Shannon is about 20 minutes from Limerick (which equates to a 50 Euro cab ride). I think I did pretty well driving back, especially considering that I was running on no sleep for upwards of 26 hours. Back to the University to pick up ... read more
