Hey everyone, here is this week's blog which I know you have been anticipating so eagerly! Haha ok so I'm hyping myself up a bit, but I definitely had a pretty cool weekend. I've been working a lot during the week and now that I'm full-time I'm so tired that I hardly do anything exciting during the week, borringgg. I am definitely making up for it on the weekends however and trying to cram as much sight-seeing as possible into two days. I seriously need a vacation from my vacations! So this week Colleen and I decided to do an awesome tour of Galway and the surrounding countryside and it definitely turned into an epic adventure! The forecast all week was looming with pouring rain and horrible weather, but we decided to persevere and take a ... read more

The last 12 miles! The road from Corofin to Ennis was easy to ride. We were able to enjoy a side trip to Dysert O,Dea, a medieval tower house/castle. This was the site of a famous battle in the 13th century where the Irish Chieftains defeated a large Norman army. We were able to explore all the floors of this structure and see what life was like back in that time (definitely not the Hilton…I want a heavenly bed…just being honest). Brian and Geoff especially like the ‘kill hole’…a hole in the floor where residents could pour boiling water or boiling oil on the doorstep of would be intruders…home protection system’s early start I suppose! Actually that would make a great advertising campaign….anyway, cool to see but we were ready to find our way home. Now, ... read more

We took a bus ride from Dublin to Galway that took about 4 hours. The roads are skinny here and full of pot holes so sleeping on the bus is almost impossible. While we weren't ping ponging our heads off of the windows or the seat in front of us trying to get some shut eye we were enjoying the beautiful scenery. Everything is so green here, beautiful plants flowers, daffodils are EVERYWHERE, it's absolutely gorgeous. We arrived just in time because all of us had to use the bathroom by the time we got there. We ran to the use the bathroon and noticed that we needed 20 Cents to use it. We all scrambled through our purses and pockets for a 20 cent coin and found one for everyone. We only had to walk ... read more

We left Castlebar early this morning and headed south toward Limerick with a quick stop in Galway. Galway is currently Greg's favorite town thus far. It is very compact and we were able to park at the Galway Cathedral and walk everywhere. We first went into the Cathedral and were able to view beautiful stainglass windows and a huge cathedral. It was also very very cold in there. I'm wearing a skirt today and we first had to make a stop at a department store so I could get tights to keep my legs warm! It was sunny, but still cold for us thin blooded Floridians. :) We first make our way to Eyre (pronounced "Air") Square which is also known as the JFK Park, in commemoration of JFK's visit here in 1963, only a few ... read more

I'm just going to write about some randoms that Greg and I have learned, laughed about, and enjoyed during our trip..... Terminology: Craic - It has a number of meanings... the latest discovery was a poster in a pub that said "Enjoy Craic on your plate, Enjoy Craic on the stage, and Enjoy craic on the telly." Craic = fun, food, beer, etc. Take away - Also known as "To go". Would you like that take away? (Greg was asked that and he said "huh?".) Pint = Beer (duh) Toasties - These are ham and cheese sandwiches the pubs make every morning and then stick in a toaster when ordered. Yummy! To let - No, it isn't missing an "i". It means "For Rent" Ticket Towt - When asking a pub owner about the upcoming 6 ... read more

Hello again. I finally got a picture or two of myself, so I thought it was time for another update. Before I do that though, I'm having some computer problems, so if you need to get in contact with me please email me at 10148108@studentmail.ul.ie So this past weekend was our first trip without the supervision of Arcadia (our program provider) Some of the girls wanted to go to Galway, so the rest of us decided to tag along. Galway is a city on the west side of Ireland (right against the ocean) and considered one of the more 'traditional' area's of Ireland. Our plan was to go to the Aran Islands which are the most Irish location in Ireland. The population there still speaks Irish (Gaelic) and some people still haven't learned English. However, when ... read more

The next day in Dublin Mary and I set out to check out one of the biggest parks in the west of the city as well as a bar our Irish friend Fitzy recommended back in DC. We got a late start so we never made it all the way to the park, but we did stop at the bar. It's called the Brazen Head and is one of the oldest pubs in Ireland, founded in 1198. One of the reasons I love Europe is the history everywhere, and where else can you drink a Guinness in a pub that was founded at the start of the Middle Ages! Before returning to our hostel we did pop into another bar (shocker) that I had really liked on my last visit to Dublin, the Porterhouse. Unlike the ... read more

It's hard telling what could happen when you take four Americans, two Irish and one German and put them in a gorgeous coastal town in Ireland for the weekend. Things could get crazy. This is exactly how I spent "reading week" last semester. "Reading week" on campus, meant that we didn't actually have any classes, so some of my couresemates and I decided to celebrate by spending the weekend in Galway so we could relax, refresh and regroup for the second half of the semester. Though we didn't have classes, we still had hundreds of pages of readings to do and a thesis outline to write, so we were all in the library more than we would've been had we had classes. By Friday, we were ready for a break. And a break we got. The ... read more

Another gray day. It looked like the whole island was wrapped in fog. Yesterday was exhausting, partly because we stayed up late. There was a live band playing in a pub, and we met some interesting people who were here for "canoeing." Something similar to water polo except in boats. We had our first pint of real Guinness which we're told is mainly a drink old men have. I don't know how true that is; I've seen a few other younger people drinking it as well. It was hard to drag ourselves out of bed in the morning, but we had an early start on a tour of the Burren and the famous Cliffs of Moher. Our guide was hilarious. According to him, every town, no matter how small, has at least two pubs. That way ... read more

Ok everyone, us twins have decided to do this blog thing. We're both going to write stuff but we will probably switch off every couple of days. As you all know, we arrived in Dublin yesterday morning around 8am. Our hostel was a little hole-in-the-wall place down a dark, narrow alley, and we shared a room with around 8 other people. It was pretty decent, the sheets were clean, the other guests were quiet and respectful (especially coming in after partying late), and the staff was helpful and friendly. We were able to walk around a little bit and see a couple streets around the hostel. We are going to explore more when we go back in a week, but yesterday we were way too tired to do much. Unfortunately, neither one of us slept at ... read more
