The raucous calls of seagulls all night did nothing to interrupt my ten hours of sleep. Great draughts of water helped me overcome the dehydration of flying, and breakfast at Ann’s restored my energy (black pudding and mushrooms today). As forecast, the sun shone again - great exploring weather. Across the Liffey River and past Trinity College, I found Grafton Street, recommended for buying a SIM card for my phone. Grafton Street was astonishing! A long stretch of the wide street was a pedestrian mall bordered by Irish and international big brand names. People hustled and bustled, whether tourists or locals. Later I learned it has been a pedestrian zone for forty years. The only phone company I saw was Vodafone, but their package that included the UK as well as Ir... read more

For a day with no sleep, I have seen a lot. Yesterday I left home at 7:20 to catch the bus to the airport and ate a splendid eggs-and-bacon breakfast. At 10:30 I departed for Toronto and was soon surprised that the “free snacks” in Westjet Plus meant a full Chicken Caesar wrap followed by a decadent brownie, accompanied by a beer. In Toronto airport, after running between far-flung gates, I had to ask the gate attendant if there was time to go to the washroom. The clock said it was about dinner time, so on the way to St John’s, I received another Chicken Caesar and brownie, with green tea and Glenlivet. To my surprise the flight from St John’s to Dublin was under four hours. With considerable effort, I shut down my mind and ... read more

Our friend Kym for her 30th birthday wanted to do a day trip to Dublin. Rather than do a day trip, Fiona and I would have preferred to have gone for a long weekend, but with moving house the following Friday, we decide a day trip is better as we need time to pack before our big house move. It's funny the other two times I've been to Dublin have been day trips as well, but only work related. To make the most out of our day trip meant catching an early flight out of Heathrow. Our plane journey is a short 1 hour flight. When we get to Dublin, it is still early in the morning. We buy energy drinks to wake up and then grab a bus and before long we have arrived into ... read more

7thMay 2018 Ireland – Only for the Brave 5 ‘Where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea’ Continuing the Grey Haired Nomads’ 2,200 mile journey by motorhome, clockwise around Ireland Belfast to Dublin and beyond Bank holidays can be a pain for retired folk like us when we’re on holiday. We don’t do crowds. And campgrounds can be full if you don’t pre-book. That’s never easy when you don’t know exactly where you’ll be when it’s time to stop play for the day. Inland seemed to be the best bet and we ended up for the night on a small site at Rathfriland, near Newry; very convenient, as it happens, for a tour around the Mountains of Mourne. To the east, boulder-stone walls fringe chess-board fields: bright green meadows on hilly slopes, ash and ... read more

It is light until 10pm, so the previous evening we wandered slowly in the pleasant evening air, snapping a photo here and there, and finding ourselves drawn, again, to the Fisherman’s Harbour, exploring an area we had not set foot upon previously. There is just something about the sea, a harbour, a town backdrop, the boats and the buildings associated with such scenes. We were virtually the only ones wandering about while others, not many, were enjoying a drink or food at the various eateries that remained open. All was calm so the reflections of the lights and boats onto the water was just beautiful. We sat on the edge of the northern sea wall gazing out to sea where an overhang of deep bluish cloud formed a backdrop. We commented on where we were, how ... read more

Endlich in Dublin! Überschwemmte Wege voller Matsch wohin man geht.

We awoke early at about 3am. Our flight was not until 10:25am, but I saw that the final Shannon flight had diverted to Dublin the day before due to the storm. It would fly empty to Shannon, and then continue to New York. It had a lot of open seats, so why not try it? It was leaving at 7am. We returned our car hire and went inside the airport to ask. Well, the flight did not have a gate, and was remotely parked. In that case they had no way for us to board it. Oh well, at least we tried. I would have loved to have just slept in longer though instead. The weather today was great. Sunshine and no wind. That was a fast moving storm! We had a quick breakfast at Dublin ... read more

"That which does not kill thee, had better run!" -every Dubliner over the age of 50 yrs. We learned of SO much beauty of the history of Dublin from our four-hour city guide, Sean Finnegan. A beautiful man of magical story-telling and joy of heart that measures beyond the shades of green in the countryside. Did you know the generosity of the Guiness family and the big love the Irish people have for them? Did you know that Central Park is modeled after St Stephen's on the Green, in the middle of Dublin? Did you know Dublin/Ireland has a rich economy from the transformation from Farm 2 Keyboard? photos video from our tour guide, Sean. https://photos.app.goo.gl/eTrOfQCbk9gBFwLT2... read more
