Today 6 of us decided to go out and about around Cork County and visit a costal city called Cobh. It was a 30 minute train ride to the city and a game of cribbage was won by myself and Kali. It was a rather warm day, but the sun was unavailable for the entire trip. The city was a very cool, a bit small, but it had a lot of history of the harbor there. We immediately found the big atraction in Cobh which is the cathedral there. It was build about 100 years ago and has 49 bells in it! It was beautiful both inside and out. After we explored the small city and checked out a nice garden area where I ate my first lunch. We processed to actually eat in a small ... read more

So these entries are about two different events over the past two weeks! The first is The Super bowl. Now normally i'm not really into American football but with being friends with so many American's it was inevitable that I ended up in a pub in Limerick watching the game and "jumping on the bandwagon" so to speak. It was a really great night! The game wasn't on until 11:30pm here and didn't end until 3:30am and by the end I was practically falling asleep on the table but it was well worth it! The pub (the only one we knew of showing the game) was packed for the game. A lot of the American students from UL but also quite a bit of Irish people a well. The Irish American Football team from UL was ... read more

Carson, Kyle, Mark, and I took a early bus today to a nearby coastal city, Kinsale. It was a great time, the best part about it all was the weather. There wasn't a cloud in the sky for most of the afternoon which made the scenery amazing. We first tried to rent bikes, but since it is winter here, they were closed until it warms up(40 degrees and we can't rent bikes?). We first stopped at the national church of Ireland, a small landmark in this touristy town. It was pretty and had many gravestones around it, but it wasn't anything special. We talked to some local about going to the most famous landmark: Fort Charles. We opted to walk and it was an excellent choice. It was a very hilly hour walk to the fort, ... read more

This weekend I came to Ireland to visit Tanya. We had a lot of fun. Here are some highlights. The first night we went out to a pub (i forget what it was called...) and then on the way back we decided to go to this fast food resturant called Hillbillies. They serve fried chicken there, and I need to point out that I don't think that either Tanya or I enjoy fried chicken. haha. But we ate like savages in that resturant. There were four of us (Tanya and I and her two flatmates Kathryn and Gina) and we ordered a family bucket. There was a lot of food. It could probably feed like eight people, but we ate it all. We were burning our fingers on the chicken it was so hot, and we ... read more

To be honest, it’s been so long since I updated that I don’t even know what to write (I bought a Journal though so this won’t happen anymore!)! So the Monday after we got back from Dublin, I had a little “date” at the cinema to see Role Models. It was pretty funny, but not as good as I expected. Tuesday we didn’t do anything since we were still recouping from Dublin. Wednesday night we went out with the intention of participating in “Band-a-oke” aka Karaoke in front of a LIVE band! However, we got there too late and had too large of a group for the bouncers to “let it slide” that we were under 21 (some of the pubs are 21 and over to keep out the college drunks). I basically told the bouncer ... read more

Today some of the group and I went on the Jameson experience in Middleton. It was an easy 30 minutes by bus and it was a blast. The tour showed us the old Jameson Distillery and how Jameson Whiskey is made. It was a long process and I can really appreciate the effort that goes into making it. Even on the lowest end, not a drop of jameson leaves its barrel for 5 years before selling! The tour wasn't too long, but after it was over we all a nice drink of Jameson. Afterwords we watched a bit of rugby in a pub in Middleton, before waiting in the rain for the bus back to Cork. What a great day trip.... read more

I am sooooooooo sick! Ugh. I say “as a stray dog” because there are so many roaming the streets of Ireland! Apparently Irish dog owners do not like neutering their pups? Therefore, lots of dogs with no homes :( They might put in a law soon that you MUST neuter your dog. I want to take all of them in cause it’s so sad! Anyway, I have whatever Irish virus is going around right now. I mean, it was inevitable considering I was out late, adjusting to the time difference, and being exposed to every single person in every one of my classes coughing? Yuck. But now I’m one of them. I couldn’t sleep Monday night because I was coughing waaay too much. It was awful but now I’m just super congested so when I eat ... read more

Alright, lots of updating to do so bear with me! On Monday I had my first Irish Traditional Music class and we got to listen to various harps and fiddles which really got me into the Irish spirit. Our lecturer also played a little jig for us on the Irish Whistle (I believe that is what it’s called) and I just wanted to jump up and start dancing…except for the fact that I have no idea how to step dance or anything like that! For that class I only have two essays that are 1000 words each. One of them is based on a “session” vs. a concert. A session occurs at a pub and is very relaxed and just a bunch of people playing the same tune on various instruments. She told us this pub ... read more

Our first time traveling to another place in Ireland was County Cork. It was the first time we got to see the countryside outside the city and the sheep! (my fave). We got into Cork late Thursday and just checked into our hostel and went to sleep. On Friday we went into Blarney which is a cute little town and checked out Blarney Castle. It is actually really tiny compared to other castles we have been to. The grounds were really pretty and they had a little nature walk with legends about witches. The pictures kind of explain, but there were some wishing steps that said if you walked up and down then with your eyes closed the witch would grant you a wish. She lived in a cave at the top of the hill which ... read more
