Wow, a nice sunny day in Ireland. What a great day to start working. I had to pull weeds out of the garden today and clean the white painted areas on the outside walls. OOh yeah loads of fun, but so worth the free stay here. This a really awesome location in Ireland I think. Easy to do day trips to areas I think. After having good lunch, I took a nice little nap. The fun begins when I wake up. I went to bar with more french people. They work here at the hostel. And we played pool and had a few drinks. Then they invited me back to there house and had some food with awesome crepes with nutella on them. SOOOOO good. After the 4th glass of wine we headed back to the ... read more

Ennis is the capital of County Clare, situated on the bend of the river Fergus. Ennis owes its origin to the O’Briens of Thomond who moved from Limerick and settled in Clonroad between 1208 and 1216. Donnchadh Cairbreach O Brien invited the Franciscans to establish a settlement within his domain in 1240. The Friary dates to the 14th century and at one stage had 350 friars and 600 pupils. It was considered the finest educational institution in Ireland for the clergy and upper classes. In 1615 the Friary became a parish church and the last of the old friars died in 1617. Some returned in 1628 but the Friary was destroyed by Cromwell’s forces in 1651 (there is a recurring theme of destruction due to Cromwell throughout the entire region). Ennis became a thriving market town ... read more

Hello everyone from Ennis! We have had a great day here in Ireland today filled with some experience of all the various climates from heavy rain and strong winds to beautiful sunshine and high temperatures! Such is life in Ireland in the southwest! We head off from Killarney this morning and made our way toward Ennis. Our first stop en route to Dingle (An Daingean ui chuis) was at Inch Beach-we stopped for some quick photos of overcast skies over the beach. The strong winds gave us a little chill as we stood by. We continued on toward Dingle and the skies lit up to beautiful sunshine as we arrived into the beautiful seaside town on the Dingle Peninsula. We head off on the Slea Head Drive and took in some stops at Ceann Tra (Ventry ... read more

We decided to lounge about today and take it easy. This means starting out the day with my espresso, some Marietta biscuits and my Irish Star. Marietta biscuits are flat thin cookies that are just barely sweet. The taste and composition is somewhere between Vanilla Wafers and Animal Crackers; they are perfect with my caffe. The Irish Star is entertaining. It has a National Enquirer side to it that is hilarious and excellent sports and politics pages; go figure. In fact their political coverage writing is far superior to anything that passes for reporting in our country. They do not cut anyone slack and in fact say things that need to be said. Ditto for their sports coverage; I found it thoroughly refreshing. Our goal was to go on an extended walk about the neighborhood and ... read more

When I was in the 6th grade I read a book titled “Red Hugh, Prince of Donegal.” It is an exciting tale about a 16th century Irish leader fighting against the English. When Hugh O'Donnell's father dies, he becomes the prince. At this time Queen Elizabeth I is preparing for war against Spain while trying to quell a civil war in Ireland. England stations troops in Ireland and the Irish don't take kindly to this. Hugh O'Donnell begins to work to unite the clans against the English. He gets thrown in prison and held as hostage in exchange for the cooperation of the clans. Meanwhile his sweetheart and her family are also held hostage in a separate location. He is captured and but manages to escape (twice) and leads the Irish clans in a successful battle ... read more

Geo: 52.8443, -8.98299After some last-day shopping for gifts in the morning, we had another long day of driving ahead of us.Drove at cliff's edge for the 2-hour tour around Slea Head at the far southwestern tip of Ireland (and western most edge of Europe), an area marked by stonewall fences between farm properties, rocky slopes dropping off into the sea, numerous significant archeological sites dotted with ancient beehive stone dwellings, and a stone church dating back to 800 AD, Gallarus Oratory. Then onto the 3-hour drive from Dingle through Tralee to Ennis, including a ferry crossing of the River Shannon. Arrived at our lodging in Ennis, The Old Ground Hotel, just before the kitchen closed. At the hotel restaurant we were treated to a seafood chowder so thick with salmon, cod, and crab that it was almost ... read more

I took a trip to London with my friend Megan, but since I'm coming back to London next semester, I'll leave most of my London stuff for next semester. However, the major highlight of that trip was Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral. Westminster is absolutely gorgeous for non-history folk, but for people who are particularly interested in English history, this was absolutely incredible. I was so excited the entire time that I was in the abbey. It houses the tombs of Elizabeth I, Bloody Mary, and Mary Queen of Scots, three incredibly famous queens. It also has an area called Poet's Corner with tombs and tributes to many incredibly famous poets. Here is a link for more information: http://www.westminster-abbey.org/visit-us. St. Paul's was a beautiful cathedral and provided a wonderful view of the city. Enough about ... read more
