9th Mar: Holiday time again! Since the Icelandic banks had recently collapsed, now was supposed to be the best time to visit Iceland. So I found some flights on the internet with the budget airline Iceland Express leaving form Stanstead, got fairly priced (for England!) train tickets. My mate, Michelle was coming a long, too. The hostels I found online was expensive, over twenty quid for a dorm room and very far from the centre of Reykjavik. I then found a complete steal on some random website, a twin room in a hotel, still not city centre, but closer than the hostel, for about 25 quid a night between us, including breakfast. A complete bargain, though I was dubious about the website as it seemed too good to be true, but I still booked it. Train ... read more

... From the Midnight Sun where the Hot Springs Blow! Led Zeppelin definitely knew what they were talking about when they wrote that song. I had that chorus going through my head for the entire weekend! This is the first entry of the new year and new semester- thanks for keeping up! This semester is starting out beautifully courses are more challenging, flatmates are lovely, and more travels! I left late afternoon on Thursday after Practical (lab) my professor was very understanding which is terrific because he comes across as a very grumpy/sarcastic sort, and he let me take a practical test early so that I could rush to catch a flight. I took the bus into the city center, where I got a taxi. Sometimes I just luck out with Taxi drivers, this one was ... read more

Last summer I stumbled upon a book entitled A time of gifts whilst browsing in a Polish used-book shop. I picked it up for two reasons: It was about travel in Europe and it was dirt cheap. I read it once, then again and by the time I returned home I had read it through at least six times, as well as reading random passages to kill time whilst waiting for a train or food. In short this is one of my favourite books ever. If you are not familiar with it, I'll recap. In 1933, an 18-year-old Patrick Leigh Fermor decided to take off and see the world. He says: "Even before I looked at a map, two great rivers had already plotted the itinerary in my mind's eye: the Rhine uncoiled across it, the ... read more

Wow, Snowstorms, Glaciers, Waterfalls and Lava Tunnels all in one day, i am exhausted! I have got to say that Iceland is certainly one of my most favorite places, the scenery is fantastic and the people or kind of friendly. This morning we went on tour to a glacier, waterfalls and climbng though a lava tunnel, the weather in Reykjavik was raining but by the time we got out of the city it had started snowing, it is so much better having it snow than rain. On the track to the glacier we had to stop and let air out of the tyres as there was to much snow to try and drive through, it was so windy and was about -5 degrees, we all jumped out of the jeep to take photos and experience the ... read more

WE FINALLY GOT TO SEE THEM! On the night of our return to Reykjavik from our drive along the south coast of Iceland, we were at our hostel when we heard a group of school students running around outside in mad hysteria, screaming that they could see the Northern Lights. Realising that we did not have to return our hire car until the following morning, we decided to drive to a nearby national park to view this phenomenon outside of the city's glow. As we emerged from the front door of the hostel, I was stopped dead in my tracks by the sweeping arcs of green light that were drifting across the night sky. I was flabbergasted that we could actually see them this clearly from the city and it was with much excitement that we ... read more
