Here we are!! The last leg of our journey in Iceland. I´ll get to that in a bit. First thigns first. Scotland. We got up a bit to 7am on Wednesday morning and got ready to leave on the train headed for Edinburgh. It was all going so well. We made perfect time acturally. 45 minutes into the train ride we are asked to get off to due to the lack of air conditioning and loss of power in the resturant. Our option was to get on the 10 45 am train to Edinburgh which was the train that Blair was on because he was lagging behind. Anyways, off we got and waited for this other train. Just before that train arrived ours was fixed so back on our old train. Arriving more then an ... read more

Visit to Reykjavik. The first thing that any visitor to Reykjavik should do is to visit the Tourist Information Centre at Aðalstræti 2 • IS-101 Reykjavík. Ask anyone, it is in the downtown Reykjavik area and is the Tourist Centre where you meet for walking tours throughout the day. They have a number of well kept secrets the biggest being the Reykjavik Welcome Card, it costs about $12 per day and gives you free travel on all the Strætó City Buses and the Viðey Island Ferry. You can also pop into this centre during the day for free Internet access with this card. The card also gives you unlimited free admission to the following which are open during the holiday season including June, July and August: - - All Reykjavik Thermal pools, there are seven of ... read more

A very very white xmas was spent in Iceland. We headed over on the 23rd and as we were landing were confronted with the moon like landscape. Completely different from all the photos we had seen of iceland. The ground was flat and rocky with a light dusting of snow. It was also barren with no trees or bushes. First day in we went to check out the town and to purchase our christmas presents for the big day. We decided to do a secret santa and had to buy the tackiest and ugliest souvenir we could find. After a fantastic meal - A lamb stew, we called it a night. Xmas eve day we were up early for our 'Golden Circle' Tour of the main sites in Iceland. It was very odd with it being ... read more

Less than a week after returning from sunny Ecuador I'm heading to a place significantly colder - Iceland. Although it was certainly cold (our first couple of days anyway) I can't agree with the naming of the country at all as I had to wait until we say actual icebergs before I had seen any ice at all. Still, had a late night arrival in Reykjavik followed the next day by an early morning start to our tour stopping first at Thingvellir. Thingvellir National Park, or 'Parliament Plains', is the site of the first Icleandic Parliament in 930 and the parliament created at that first meeting continued until 1789. The Law Council met every summer there as well as becoming a meeting place for traders. More interestingly (seeing as there are no remaining buildings to show ... read more

Straight from sunny Spain I headed into chilly Iceland. We arrived at Heathrow in good time although as we headed towards our gate we were a little bemused to see the people coming the opposite way wrapped up in furs and fleeces and still wearing their hats and gloves... was Iceland going to be that cold??? We had a good flight and a very easy, if slightly surreal, experience of walking through a practically deserted airport as we arrived in Reykjavik. We took a coach to our first hotel and the tour guide gave a valient attempt at pointing out things of interest along the way. My favourite comment had to be 'And to you right is the famous Blue Lagoon. We usually get great views of it in daylight. You might be able to see ... read more

We started our Iceland adventure on a busy Friday evening at Heathrow. The flight to Reyjavik was smooth and we were soon there. Our first accommodation was at the university just across from the main cathedral. Memories of 1970's college halls of residence came flooding back. The furniture even looked the same. We awoke throughout the night to the sound of what seemed to be a seal clapping but in the morning it was only the metal wires of the flag pole outside. Rekjavik was dull and gloomy but as an optimist I knew the weather would cheer up. They have a saying in Iceland that if you don't like the weather then just wait 15 minutes. (Rekjavik seemed a rather plain, uninteresting place but then I am not much of a town person and the ... read more

After another slack night in my ridiculously nice hotel in Oslo, and a huge free breakfast of eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, plus the trademark cereal covered in yogurt (which got a few funny looks) I made my way to the airport. A 3 hour flight later and I was landing in Iceland. Before the plane even touched the ground I was thinking to myself, I have got to come back here sometime. The landscape was unereal, mainly volcanic rocks and mosses. The airport is about 50km from Reykjavik so I caught the shuttle bus into the city, and made my way to the camp ground. I decided after bashing my budget at the hotel I would do some camping. Issue One: 8 degrees and raining like death. Issue Two: The amount of condensation that accumulated inside ... read more

So it was onto my next adventure, Iceland. As the name suggests, I was expecting it to be pretty cold there, but I was pleasantly surprised when I turned up and it was actually warmer than London! My first day, it was about 23-25 degrees. Very nice! It didn't last though, and although it got cooler, there was no need for the thermals I took along. Anyway, I landed in Iceland, in a place called Keflavik and made the trek to the capital, Reykjavik. I must say I was a bit surprised by the city, and the country in general. I didn't realise it was as small as it was. Reykjavik has a population of 200,000 and the country in total is only 100,000 more. Also it is very volcanic, so much so that all the ... read more

I guess i'll pick up from where the last entry left off and continue through to my departure. I am going to put a ton of pictures up and I suggest you check them out. The Icelandic countryside is ridiculously stunning. When this trip was initially booked, I did some research and found that Reykjavik despite it's reputation for crazy nightlife is really only a party town Thurs-Sat. As a result, I was a bit worried that I would only get one really unnecessary night of binge drinking in. Unbeknownst to me, Monday was a national holiday (I think "commerce day"), this led to two things. 1. A large % of the natives of Reykjavik were on vacation in the Westmen Islands grilling puffin, hanging out and drinking beers and 2. The people who were ... read more

Just a quick note to Johann who commented on yesterday's entry. I meant no disrespect to the people of Iceland. Also, I was not expecting tropical weather, it was a reference to the song "Tropical Iceland" by the Fiery Furnaces. Ok, from the top then. I woke up around 1PM after taking a nap to try and counteract the onset of jetlag. First checked out the square and area immediately around the hotel, then went down by the harbor and through a flea market that is setup indoors near there. Headed to the other side of town and got lunch at Solon, which was a pretty mediocre rendition of fish & chips. I wandered around the town for a few hours and I must say, it's very clean and I didn't run into any areas that ... read more
