We started bright and early and drove to the National Park. This park is a UNESCO world heritage site, and is the place of the first parliament in Iceland more than 800 years ago. For several hundred years the delegates, their families, and support community would meet for about two weeks in the summer. They camped and fished in the lake. The lake happens to be in the rift valley where the American plate and the European plate are constantly pulling apart from each other. The lake formed when the part in between sank, and is the largest lake in Iceland. The earliest settler in Iceland was said to have arrived in 870. Man it was windy today, serious wind, the kind that is hard to stand up in. Our bus traveled from the American plate ... read more

Most people don't need air conditioning in Iceland, and normally we wouldn't either, but our room is hot even with the windows open and the 50 degree air blowing in. And yes, we checked to make sure the heat was not on. Anyway, it made for a hot night's sleep. We headed out in the morning to the spectacular Blue Lagoon. There we donned our swimsuits and joined in the fun. The water is hot water from the ground and is full of minerals and sicilia. It is very milky looking. We made our way to the bar in the lagoon where we were able to get a free sparkling wine. It was relaxing and beautiful. We came back for lunch and then toured a museum of some of the oldest houses in Iceland. They were ... read more

Dear All Greetings once more, on this my final entry for my amazing trip this summer. I write this one on my fantastic final few days on this summer adventure exploring Viking lands, and they turned out to be a wonderful wrap up to this journey. I was tired and ready to go home, but still had just that little bit of travel energy within me to explore and enjoy my final few sights. On a cool, crisp and seriously windy Monday morning, I left lovely Grundarfjörður behind and set off on my last car journey on this epic Icelandic road trip, heading southwards to Reykjavík, but with a stop off in lovely little Borgarnes along the way. This was a nice little town, in a dramatic location on a peninsula jutting out into the ocean ... read more

After getting no sleep on the overnight direct flight from Raleigh, we finally landed in Reykjavík. The five minute border patrol took one hour, they needed to make a new sign. We boarded a bus for the hour-long ride to the hotel where we met four or five other buses from other cruise lines arriving at the same time. What a mess! After a quick breakfast we checked in and took a short rest. However, we don't like wasting even a minute of a vacation, so we headed out to see Reykjavík on foot. We walked the harbor and then headed to the shopping district which had some quaint, Icelandic architecture. In the midst of all of the nice shops was a "Phallus Museum". Needless to say, you don't have to think very hard to realize ... read more

Short and sweet - real fun begins tomorrow. Chilly rainy day today, so I didn’t do much. The benefit of Reykjavík, bad weather doesn’t bother me since I’ve seen it, done it and I don’t mind if it’s quiet. I bussed down to the harbour and walked back through the little neighbourhoods, just to get a taste of something new. (I also had my pastries to keep me going, yum lol). Also found a few new statues which is always fun :) Flight to Oslo was uneventful - airport was a little more chaotic than usual, but nothing compared to Toronto. Got some more skyr, had my tuna sandwich (always forget they put egg in their tuna sandwiches here which is fine… just a weird surprise) and people watched for a bit. ... read more

It is so good to be back out in the world..! I'm going to get all feels about that at some point on this trip, but right now I'm too tired. Covid got me at the start of July and I was very nervous about how I'd feel and of course that I'd test negative before leaving (which I did, right down to the wire!) Pearson lived up to the current horror stories - it was indeed a gong show, particularly the security line and then just about every Air Canada flight seemed to be delayed - thankfully Icelandair did well, we only left about 15-20min delayed. I also did surprisingly well with the lights and pressure change - that was the last big thing to try post-concussion, success..!! Flight was uneventful. I paid for extra ... read more

I have wanted to visit Iceland for a long time. I finally made it onto the Isle of Fire and Ice that straddle two tectonic plates in June 2022. I spent a month exploring the island. My route more or less followed the N1, The Ring Road, in an anti-clockwise direction. I spent a couple of days exploring Reykjavik before setting off. I set off to explore the peninsula of Seltjarnarnes which stretches northwest from the city into the bay. The cycle was intended as a gentle warm up to tougher days which I had no doubt lay ahead. It turned into a lovely wildlife tour. It was soon obvious that birds are much more tolerant of people in Iceland than in Ireland. A solitary black tailed godwit in its gorgeous red summer plummage continued feeding ... read more

Susan and I were fortunate to find ourselves with a third day in Reykjavik. Our flight home was not until 8:10 p.m. and our airport transfer not until 4:40 p.m. We planned to use the time by visiting the National Museum of Iceland. Breakfast in the Vox restaurant of the hotel was unhurried, There did not appear to be the large incoming and conference crowds of the previous Sunday. Four other members of our tour were also still here and we breakfasted with them. Two individuals were going to remain in Reykjavik another two days. We took a taxi to the museum and arrived shortly after opening. The museum is adjacent to the campus of the University of Iceland and across the street from the National Library. Principally the museum tells the story of inhabited Iceland. ... read more

Again in Reykjavik, the first priority was to take a Covid-19 test. The USA required a negative COVID-19 test to enter until June 12. The motorcoach took us directly to the Harpa concert hall where Iceland had set up a very efficient testing site. A queue formed, but moved quickly. The test result was delivered to my smartphone within 30 minutes. (A smartphone is an indispensable travel necessity today.) Part of the group was going to the Blue Lagoon for an afternoon dip while the coach let the rest of us off at the Hilton Reykjavik Nodica. Luckily, our room was ready this time. The afternoon was available for sightseeing around the city. Susan and I took a taxi to the Hallgrímskirkja. A wedding was scheduled for 4:30 p.m., but it was still open to visit. ... read more

Our Icelandair flight arrived at Keflavik (pronounced Keplavik) at 6:20 a.m. All flights from North America appear to arrive in this time slot and the airport ramp is densely packed with more arrivals than there are gates. Keflavik has rows of ramp stairs out on the tarmac to accommodate them. A bus brought arriving passengers to the terminal A Globus representative met us and drove us and four other tour members to the Hilton Nordica, arriving at 8:30 a.m. The topography of Iceland became clear on the drive from the airport. The area around the airport is surprisingly undeveloped. Only a Marriott hotel and the buildings from the former US Naval Air Station are near it. (The airfield was built during World War II. I saw shelters for fighter jets at the end of the runway ... read more
