http://www.heygo.com 21st February - A day in Iceland Today has been a wonderful day of discovery with virtual guide Albert in Iceland. It was so well planned and all five locations had something special with amazing views, interesting natural wonders and a personal tour around the Turf House Museum with Sylvia. Starting at 10am with gaps in between for Albert to get to the next location. These virtual guides go that extra mile to ensure their group have a great experience. When Albert announced that a bird had decided to leave him a lucky dropping he made everyone laugh by saying ‘I’m so pleased that cows don’t fly ’ Such a fun loving guy. http://www.heygo.com 18th February Iceland Highlights of the West Part I: - Hraunfossar - Lavafields and Waterfalls Hraunfossar - Lava Falls are beautiful and unusual natural phenomena, a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres out of the lava which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the Glacier. The waterfalls pour into the glacial river Hvita from ledges of less porous rock in the lava. The Glacier is 40km inland. As we walked with our virtual guide Albert the views were stunning, I loved all the different colours and textures of the lava rock against the turquoise and white waters. The pedestrian bridge across the river was originally built in 1891 and renovated exactly a century later. Originally it was used to drive sheep across ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 14th February Golden Circle Part I: Thingvellir National Park Thingvellir is the only place in the world where you can stand between two continental plates. Thingvellir National Park lies on top of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a gigantic 16,000-km fissure that stretches between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Iceland is the only place in the world where the fault line is above sea level. This unique landscape is a result of the blanket of 10,000-year-old lava fields. Several eruptions in the area & shifting tectonic plates. Thingvellir is known as the birthplace of Iceland as a nation, and home to the oldest ongoing parliament in the world. The Icelandic Commonwealth period ran from the year 930 until 1262. The law council, Lögrétta, was the supreme institution of the Alþingi, and the Lögbe... read more

The idea of going to Iceland sprung to mind and grew into being mid-yachting charter season. It was my very first yachting season and was basically solid 12-18 hour days for 6 straight months. I had been told by my chief mate that midseason blues were a real thing and the very best way to combat it was to buy yourself something ‘shiny’ so that you had something to look forward to and push you to get through the second half of the crazy European summer. Since I take experiences over possessions, I decided I would book a much needed holiday. I researched tons of places and decided initially I would head to Columbia and meet up with a friend I had made in India just a few months before. Even as I made the decision ... read more

We arrived back a JFK 3 hours before our flight to Copenhagen via Reykjavik. Early? Well, #1 it's an international flight so I didn't think it was crazy when I read that 3 hours is the recommended arrival time and #2 it's JFK so one would think it would be super busy. As luck would have it, there was literally NO ONE in line at the Icelandair counter . Check in took 5 minutes tops and then the TSA precheck line was 6 people long counting us. So 20 minutes after getting our luggage back from the storage place, we were all checked in and ready to go. We quickly got settled, plugged in our electonics, grabbed food and waited to board our flight to Reykjavik. The time went quickly. Before we knew it, the Icelandair ... read more

Our trip ends today. We continue traveling around the Ring Road back to Reykjavik with some interesting stops along the way. Technically we are in West Iceland traveling back to Southwest Iceland. First stop is Grabrok, a volcano with a nice crater that has a walk up it. When I packed clothing for this trip I figured I needed the warm clothing and rain gear for Greenland. Wow was I wrong. It rained once in Greenland, and drizzled another day. It was cold only near the glaciers and icebergs. The rest of the time the weather was great. Yesterday was a good day in Reykjavik, but I knew the rain was coming, but I didn't know it would be this bad. It's cold, very windy, and raining sideways. Today I transferred from my AirBnB to Hotel Orkin. Luckily I was able to walk there before the rain hit, about a 20 minute walk. I put my luggage in storage, rested awhile, then figured out how to take the public bus to Perlan. It was actually quite easy and the bus drivers were very helpful ... read more

August 23, 2019 – Reykjavik, Iceland – Weather: 52°F/11°C, partly cloudy with the scattered showers, wind 1mph, humidity 71° Port of call for the next two days is Reykjavik the capital of Iceland which is situated on the western shores of the island. First thought to have been settled in the 9thor 10thcenturies by Celtic and Norwegian immigrants it wasn’t until the 18thcentury when a full-fledged community had developed. Today we docked at 11:00 am out in the container port area under threatening skies. Cloudy skies, rain and cool temperatures have certainly been a large part of this journey. Our tour for today is called the Best of the Golden Circle, an eight-hour driving tour of the area that in the end covered over 300+ kilometers. On our tour we stopped at a geothermal power plant ... read more

August 24, 2019 – Reykjavik, Iceland – Weather: 55°F/13°C, partly cloudy with the sky clearing to blue sunny skies, wind 8.1 mph, humidity 71° We awoke this morning to a very quiet Reykjavik harbour. Even though we are docked in a container port area there was no activity at the docks. The city is having a festival today that includes a marathon this morning, street parties all through the day culminating in a firework display just as we are leaving port this evening at 11:00 pm. Our tour today was called “Lunar Landscapes”. Our first stop was in the village of Grindavik where the Viking World Museum is located. We spent an hour in the museum which is home to a full-scale replica of the Gokstad Viking longship that was discovered in Norway in 1882. On ... read more

Yes, you read that correctly - today I went to the penis museum. If you are offended by photos of penises, don't look at the pictures for this entry. I slept in today because I knew I would be doing alot of walking. My AirBnB is a little east of the city center, but not too far so I decided to walk. I went along the waterfront where a marathon and half-marathon was taking place. I could hear music blaring from somewhere closer to the city center. Today is Culture Day, and there are bands and music all over the city. Some museums are free today, and there is food and food trucks everywhere. Tons of people out walking around, dancing in the square, and kids having mock battles. I went to the Phallus Museum out ... read more
