This day was to be one of the shorter drives, with a number of sites and activities to check out so after our morning coffee we were on our way...after a wrong turn we got back on track and were headed to our first stop of the day: Dettifoss waterfall... We were told that the road from Asbyrgi to Dettifoss wasn't paved, and after finding the correct turnoff we were surprised to see a paved road...wicked! Cruising along merrily when unfortunately that wonderful stretch of asphalt suddenly ended and sure enough the dirt road began...It was then we were to discover that not only was this a dirt road, but it was full of potholes...couldn't drive more than 20 or 30 meters before having to slow down and negotiate through oftentimes deep water-filled holes, it was ... read more

The other 5 members of our small tour group had arrived at the Kex Hostel yesterday afternoon and evening so this morning we packed hurriedly and went down to try and get some breakfast. I say 'try' because breakfast doesn't start being served until 7am and we had an internal flight scheduled at 8am. Fortunately Reykjavik's domestic airport is much closer to the city centre than the international one, just a 10 minute taxi ride from the hostel (also free WiFi at both!). Our 40-minute flight to the northern town of Akureyri was on time and our Icelandic tour guide Oskar was there to meet us at Akureyri airport with a 4-wheel-drive minibus. Akureyri is Iceland's second largest urban area (with obviously the capital being the largest) with a population of less than 20,000, and we ... read more

Having picked up the rest of our little group from the airport we finally set off on our tour of the Myvatn area. As we drive off over the fjord and along the shore, the same way I went on my bus trip to Husavik, we find out from our guide Oskar a few interesting snippets of information about Iceland and the area we are driving through: ~ Myvatn is pronounced nothing like I'd thought and goes something like MEE-VA-TNNN with the NNN being a blow out through the nostrils with your mouth shut. Don't try this with a cold! ~ The fjord is called Eyjafjörður which means 'fjord of the islands'. It's 60km long and the width averages 6-10km along a lot of its length widening to 25km at the end that meets the sea. ... read more

Travel tip # 32:Iceland is a whole lot bigger than you can imagine, so get smart fast and plan more time than you think you need. In the 14 days or so that we have been here, we really have only scratched the surface on all there is to see and do. As we now sadly bid farewell to Iceland, we can say we have enjoyed our time here. No, wait a minute, strike that…… we have been witness to great natural wonders and wonderful experiences that will last a lifetime. We will surely miss the days that allowed us to see twenty or more new waterfalls in a few hours or the day that we saw ten rainbows in just one day. We have used up all the adjective possible to describe what we have ... read more

We went to a waterfall. It was the biggest in Europe. There was another one. It was kind of little. We climbed rocks. It was fun. We went to a volcanoe. I had water in it. It was fun. We went to a lava field. There was a lot of rocks. It was fun. - Sofia Journal Entry Aug 14, 2012 This morning we did not get up to early, but took off for some other really cool places. Daddy had told me that our 2 days in Myvatn would be filled with lots of places that had cool landscapes or seemed like it was from a different planet, just like yesterday, and he was right. Our first stop were to see two incredible waterfalls. Daddy decided that we would see it from the "better" side ... read more

We went to a waterfall. It was beautiful. We went to little volcanoes. There were flies. They got on my dad, but not me. We went to a place with a lot of lava rocks. We had lunch there and it was cool. We went to these hot lava. It was bubbling. It was fun. We went to a hot pool to relax and it was fun - Sofia Journal Entry Aug 13. So after after 2 nights in Akuyeri and breakfast at our favorite bakery, we were off to our next destination - Myvatn. Daddy told me that this would be an area of incredible beauty as he read lots about it in "the book" as I called it (lonely planet). This was not going to be a day of a lot of driving, but ... read more

Our last day together included two crater hikes before lunch, a drive to Akureyri, a flight back to Reykjavik, and dinner near the pond. The morning hikes took us to Namafjall and Hverfjall, two overlapping calderas. Before and after hiking up to the main rim of Namafjall we took in the airs of the nearby mud geysers. The pumice trails easily gave way under our feet and we were fortunate to avoid the rain which would have made the surface dangerously slippery. The hike up to Hverfall on broken stone was not as eventfull as the way down. This provided a fun slalom run for the more nimble, and a challenge of balance and quad strength for others. At the bottom of the trail we entered Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles) as area of raised lava formations. After ... read more

This was a driving day - repositioning to the Myvatn area for a few hikes in the north central area of the country. Before leaving Hofn we took in the Glacier Museum. Besides the historical and geologic displays was a running loop of the Aston Martin car chase scene from the James Bond film Die Another Day. The scene was filmed on Jokulsarlon which had been blocked and allowed to freeze. Scenes of several other movies have been at that location. Riding along the east coast fjords we moved into one of the older parts of the country. Most of the country's landmass is relatively new; shaped by volcanic and glacial activity, and erosion. The east and west coasts are older and shaped more by sea erosion; the last volcanic activity being before the last ice ... read more
