Temetői látogatás, rendhagyó idegenvezetés tanulóink, a KOPINT-DATORG Szakközépiskolaidegenforgalmi szakosai (idegenvezető, protokoll, utazás ügyintéző) számára. Egy novemberi csípősen hideg pénteken elzarándokoltunk a Kerepesi temetőbe. Megtekintettük nemzetünk nagyjainak az emlékműveit, sírhantjait. Meghallgattuk tanáraink magyarázatát, elgondolkodtunk elődeink példáján és sorsán. Első állomásunk Vörösmarty Mihály sírköve volt. Felidéztük a Szózat sorait, amelyet minden tanévnyitó végén igazgatónk mond el. "Légy híve rendületlenül Hazádnak, oh magyar: Ez éltetőd, s ha elbukál, Hantjával ez takar. A nagy világon e kívül Nincsen számodra hely; Áldjon vagy verjen sors keze: Itt élned, halnod kell." A korlátra felkötöttük a nemzeti színű szalagot, tovább sétáltunk. Nem messze Arany János nyughelyét láthattuk, a tölgyek alatt. "A tölg... read more

Day 156 to 159 Hungary .....Budapest and thermal spas Our journey through Romania took us through many small towns all looking quite similar, bungalow type houses lining the roadside. The countryside was mainly arable land and rolling hills, lots of horse drawn carts, and people working in the fields. Our last campsite in Romania was run by a Dutch guy, he had opened a children’s home there 12 years ago and was in the process of handing it over to local people, the majority of the children having been fostered. Right up my street! Unfortunately the guy was a busy man and did not have time to chat, as I’d loved to have found out more about his charity and their work. We headed on to Budapest, we found Hungary instantly had a different feel, much ... read more

This is the big one*. A whole 17 days of uninterrupted travel through central and East Europe. Not only was it booked before I left Auckland back in April, but it's the primary reason I left in the first place! Why? One word: Oktoberfest!! I actually made a pact with a few friends in New Zealand last year that we would all be at Oktoberfest 2011, though the Rugby World Cup dissuaded all but one die-hard traveller (She joins me later in Munich). The story starts in Budapest, Hungary, with a whole week to go before we would finally gaze upon the magical gates of the beerfest. I landed late on Friday night with my age-old kiwi friend Hannah, and quickly found our spacious apartment at Boulevard Hostel. We awoke early the next morning for our ... read more

We stayed in our first non-hostel in Budapest. The reason for this being that we were due to receive our dreaded exam results here and therefore we would need a reliable and preferably free WIFI connection. Oh and added to this A WASHING MACHINE!!!! This was honestly one of the highlights of Budapest, actually washing our worn-inside-out pants and saturated-in-sweat t-shirts, in other words ... luxury. Budpest was hot. Really hot. It was roughly 38 -42 degrees whil we were there. That is bordering on too hot for someone who lives in a country with two seasons and one day of summer. On the first day we searched out the nearest tesco express (yeah there was one), stocked up on some food and rambled around the city and it's many bridges. INTERESTING FACT (well a fact ... read more

The floor of the Quiet Room was cold, hard and not particularly sanitary. It was also the only place I could find to sleep off the hours before my flight to Budapest. It was 1am and the temperature outside Doha International Airport was pushing 40 degrees. Inside was a chilly 18 (feels like 10 when you’re sleeping on the floor). I woke up and looked at my phone with a start. How could I have slept for 7 hours and missed boarding? Turns out I was worrying needlessly – my phone was still on Kathmandu time and I had only slept 45 minutes. The hours passed in a haze of tea, internet use and aimless wandering before my flight was finally called. Out into the searing heat and onto a shuttle bus, we were soon en ... read more

We woke up from our night in the first hostel in Budapest and had a very cold shower - it was more of a high up tap than a shower. Jenna needs to man up, she barely put her whole body in. We got to the next hostel, which was awesome on first impressions, with balconies over-looking a big communal area. We dumped our bags and found ourselves in a falafel shop (big nom) and then wandered the streets of Budapest without a map. We briefly went back in time along a street that sold only Victorian clothing, through a market from the 70s, and to a fancy restaurant where we decided to indulge in an overpriced coffee. So worth it though. We then climbed castle hill and saw incredible views over the bridges and city. ... read more

So we wrote loads about the first few days in Prague, and then Jenna somehow managed to delete it. So here's a slightly less enthusiastic version! Immediately after our last blog entry, we were forced into a drinking game. Everyone stood in two teams in lines, we had to down our drink, fli the plastic cup over and then it was the next persons turn- we got messy 3 games later, and were bullied into going out. But after waiting for what seemed like an age outside Mc Cafe, everyone decided to go to the 5 storey Europop club which we really didn't fancy. So we went to Chapeaux Rouge with our lovely Swedish girl, Sanna. Shortly after sitting down at a massive table, with our massive pints, we were approached by a big group of ... read more

Our first full day in Budapest and unfortunately the local meteorologists were correct with their weather forecast – rain showers. With only two days in the city we couldn’t sit around and wait for the rain to clear so we headed off to catch a tram which would connect with the Metro into the city centre. We had chosen our hotel because of its close proximity to the tramway stop just across the road. Little did we realise that the hotel was surrounded by large apartment buildings reminiscent of the Soviet occupation up until 1991. We purchased tram tickets from the hotel receptionist who assured us they would be good for both the tram and Metro for one trip. Unfortunately the grim looking ticket inspectors at the Metro station disagreed and so extra tickets had to ... read more

Well, things have been crazy for the past month, as friends and family well know. My life in Canada has been up-rooted and I'm now officially living in Europe - crazy! I started the summer with a two-week Habitat for Humanity build with some of my high school students. We started and ended in Budapest, but did the actual construction in Beius, Romania. It was an amazing experience and I am so thankful it all went smoothly. For anyone who is considering slightly more off-the-beaten-path travel, I can highly recommend the area of Romania I was in.....beautiful countryside and mountains and the people were just wonderful! After Romania, and a couple of days of recovery in Budapest, I went to the Netherlands, which will be home for the next few years. It was an intense week ... read more
