Hey everyone (or the few people who still bother reading this!)!! So anyway, on my flight over to Budapest I couldn't stay awake and really only remember the take off and landing. I arrived in Budapest at about 19:30 and jumped on a bus and train to get to my hostel which was on the Pest side of the river. I arrived at my hostel to the familiar sound of Aussie accents, and discovered that the entire hostel was full of Aussie travellers. I stayed and talked with some of them for a while and then the hostel guy put the film 'Dune' and I watched that. In the end I got an early night and slept quite well ... if only I'd known I might have appreciated it more... The next day I spent walking ... read more

Well i'm in Hungary at the moment. Had a very busy last couple of weeks: From Prague i went to another Czech city called Césky Krumlov. The two days i spent there were great, it was the kind of small town you could laze around in and not think you're wasting anytime at all. Césky is home to the second biggest castle in Czech (after Prague castle - the largest in the world) and offers amazing views for those who can be bothered walking to the top (and yes i did - i am not that lazy yet). The town is virtually entirely surrounded by the Vltava River (it makes an Omega shape around the town, or an Ohm symbol for those electronically-minded people), which means in every direction you look there's something beautiful to look ... read more

Greetings everyone! I am back again with an update on my activities here in Budapest. Since I last posted here not too much has happened but here goes…On Wednesday I went on field trips in both my classes. The first class, Hungarian, took us to a local library that used to be a rich family’s mansion. The place was beautiful. Apparently the city bought the house after the family died and turned it into a public library cause it was so cool. The children’s area was really really nice, it looked like so much fun. They had a pit in the floor of one room that was full of square pillows that kids could just lay in. Because my EAP group is full of kids, they all just climbed right in. Pictures will follow. After touring ... read more

Hello again Ladies and Gentleman. I am still in Budapest. And it is now raining. The streets are wet, as tends to happen when water falls from the sky. It’s a nice change after the intense heat of the past…well pretty much ever since I got here excluding a day or two. I will take a picture of rainy Budapest at some point, but I forgot my camera at home today so I don’t have any currently. I do however have a priceless picture of a trashcan that seems to be doing a valiant job despite an obvious obstacle. Yesterday was my first real day of classes, and it went smashingly. Today was my second day of classes, and it went just as well. The professor for my anthropology class which is focusing on the Roma ... read more

Plan for the Day We finally slept a full night last night and it was difficult to get up at 7:30AM - good sign! Today we plan on visiting the Parliament and Hungary's Crown Jewels. We also plan on going to one of the Baths in the city since a visit to Budapest would not be complete without it. Parliament and the Crown Jewels It's not good to be an American if you want to see the crown jewels! Since May 1 visiting Parliament is free for EU Citizens which means the only other predominant tourist groups - Americans and Japanese - pay a $15 per person penalty to visit. Fortunately it was well worth the money as the Parliament was very impressive. The crown jewels were beautiful as well but they are not special for ... read more

A Sunday is no way to discover a city and today we spent the lion's share of our time visiting the lower Pest 's lion-fronted landmarks. We started the morning bright and early at 4:30AM, leaving the digs at the Hilton at about 6AM and visiting into the North of the Castle area, not to visit as we later did in the day, but to hit up the Mammut Shopping Center for some vittles. With considerable challenge finding acceptable dining establishments we decided to take matters into our own hands. This included some pate, cheese, bread, water, Hungarian rose wine, pears, and the UHT milk that love (organic to boot) - just in case you were wondering what was on the menu. . . We then lugged this back the few hundred meters elevation to the ... read more

At the airport, a driver with a Mercedes is waiting for us. Nice. There is cold drizzle when we venture out of our hotel cubbyhole, the Ibis Centrum, so we comfort ourselves with a fine lunch at El Caramel, one of the new, cool places on fashionable Raday Utca. My thick creamy mushroom soup was a perfect warm up and my eggplant sandwich on a perfectly smooth crispy roll, hit the spot. Our waitress knows just enough English to get her job done (typical of Hungarian establishments). The thermal baths/spas that city is known for, have no use for English either, so we stumble through. After a nap, we are ready for dinner at nearby Calvin on Kalvin Ter, a well-known square in downtown Pest. The fettuccine with chicken in a fine cream sauce (about $4.50 ... read more
