I know that I'm here for the educational experience and academics come first and all that jazz but I mean, come on. Do you know how hard it is to work on homework when all I am thinking is "I only have XX amount of days here, I need to be enjoying it as much as I can" Trust me, its not fun. One of my friends put it best, "Writing a paper and being abroad don't mix" I know it sounds bad, but I agree. This is the last week of classes so I've been keeping busy with papers, projects, and study guides. As part of university policy we are required to have a certain amount of classes but for some reason we started a week late. So all of my teachers have been scrambling ... read more

Well, I got through my first Thanksgiving away from home. After going to class, (Yes, I had class on Thanksgiving. The rest of the Americans protested but to no avail) a group of us went to the park and played American football. Some of the Hungarians laughed as they walked by. After that a group of DePaul people all started cooking Thanksgiving dinner. One of the girls has an apartment down the street so we all cooked the food in the dorms kitchen and then took it there. I was responsible for cooking stuffing. After looking up a couple recipes online and talking to some friends on how they make it, I went to the store to pick up the ingredients. I wrote down what I needed and their translations into Hungarian. After getting there I ... read more

Yesterday was a national holiday in Hungary. I don't there is an official name for it but it was to commemorate Hungarian revolution against the Communists on October 23, 1956. For those of you that don't know the story (which I'm sure is a majority because I hadn't hear it till two days ago) here is a brief overview. It started with the college students. They made a list of demands that they wanted from the government and set out with a peaceful demonstration. They walked all over Budapest and the rest of the population joined them when they walked to the Parliament and then the radio station to announce their demands. This happened for several days until on the 3rd day the Communist party open fired on the demonstrators. One of the pictures is the ... read more

Last night my roommate invited me to play soccer with him and his friends. Laszlo, my roommate, plays for a team in his home town in Eastern Hungary. One of the first things he told me was that he has a contract with a big team back home. Immediately I was intimated because I thought I was living with a professional soccer player. Turns out that having a contract with a team isn't that big of a deal here because the level of play isn't that high. So when he invited me to play with him and his friends I was immediately intimidated. As we were walking to the field I told him not to tell all his friends that I was American cause I didn't want to get ridiculed for calling it "Soccer" or not ... read more

So since I haven't added than many photos I decided that I would upload some of my favorites that I've taken so far. Some of my friends posted Oktober Fest pictures on Facebook so I was able to save some of them. If you've read my Oktober Fest post then you know the story about my camera... So, grudgingly, I bought another camera the other day. Even though it's a better, newer camera I would have liked to spend the money on other things. But it's something that I have to have so oh well. These are just some of the many photos that I have taken. There's more but these are the best so far. Hope you enjoy!... read more

The Hungarian culture is very similar to the Western culture but there has been many little differences that I have seen in the past month: -The cross walks are much quicker to turn red. The flash several times and then that's it. Its not like America where you can still cross when it starts to flash. -Paying for the bathroom. Most places have old women that sit outside with trays where its "strongly suggested" that you tip them. Other places I have seen turnstiles that won't let you in if you don't pay. -The difference in bottled water. They have 3 kinds, still water (no fizz) with pink caps, medium fizz with green caps, and carbonated water with blue caps. It took me 3 weeks to figure that out when someone finally told me. Every time ... read more

Hey folks, To read Chloe, stroll down to the french part. I am very late in my blog entries. There is a lot going on right now and we are doing smaller countries. I am writing this entry from Wien where the temperature is not very nice. We spend three night in the amazing city of Budapest. A city that will serve your daily need of history, culture and relaxation. Our hostel was located next to the greatest open air market I have ever been in. They are using an old train station and you can find almost anything you wish for. The main floor is the usual food court. The top floor consist of small restaurant and a lot of souvenir kiosk. By the way, the souvenirs are way cheaper there that anywhere in the ... read more

Wow. It has been so long since I've been able to blog. Partly due to inebriation, partly due to lack of internet. PARIS-MUNICH-PRAGUE-BUDAPEST. I have decided that I much prefer train travel when in Europe. Rock up to the station 10 minutes before departure, chuck your bags on the rack and chill out. Albeit it's 3 times as long, but it's worth it for the journey. This was promtly decided after our shuttle came to pick us up at 3.30am for a 7am flight in Paris, it was painful and so unncessary, but unfortunately a train was just not an option for our little adventure to the land of the beer. Now, I'd love to tell you how beautiful Munich is and how much I enjoyed the German sights but unfortunately all I can relay is ... read more

Day 6 After a pretty drunken night involving wine, local liquors, guiness and desperados this morning was rough not helped by the fact I smacked my head on the ceiling first thing this morn (I hate bunk beds!) But after a late breakfast and doing some washing we got on the tube and headed to the aquarium where we all fell in love with the the turtle now named Frederick! It also had reptiles, birds and randomly a tamarind monkey so that was all good! A spur of the moment trip to the torture museum was not quite as nice but interesting all the same and to be honest maný of the devices were similar to that of the sex museum in prague! Lunch followed and a quick trip to the spar where I found my ... read more
