Hangover and late start after our cray-z night out at the Ruin pub, led us to get a fire-roasted dough roll thing called a Kürtoskalács, also known as chimney cake. It’s a traditional Hungarian pastry that originated in Transylvania, I’m told. It’s made with dough strips glazed with sugar over a fire. After it’s toasted it’s rolled in toppings like sugar, cinnamon, or nuts. We got ours with cinnamon! Oh it was GOOD! After a couple blah blah shopping stops for Robyn (who is looking for overpriced Hungarian perfumes which cause a person to smell like rotten peaches), we were off to do some real Budapest stuffs. Fortunately for my nose, they were out of the rotten perfume, so Robyn is a little richer and I have narrowly escaped a fruity headache. We took the underground ... read more

Hello all..... sorry I have been so slack, but I have been having a great time drinking champagne in the air and around Europe... I have tried 5 so far and think that Bollinger is the front runner for favourite at the moment (others are Chandon, Laurent Perrier, Pommery and Marquis de la Tour). I left you last in Bath and so far have also visited Edinburgh, York, Oxford (for Lunch with Uncle Ray) and back to London.... I am writing this from my hotel in Budapest (Buda on one side of the Danube and Pest on the other) The hotel is actually in Pest, but we looked at both sides this morning. With regard to the other towns I have visited... I am going to send you to Greg's blog (His blog name is being ... read more

Hi Guys Good to find time to get back. I think, well I know the last blog got us to Oxford to see Ray. From there we headed off to London via the A40. Everything was travelling smoothly until there was displayed a message about a delay near the Target roundabout. A DELAY. It took us close to 2 hours to travel the couple of miles to the accident site (a semi-trailer roll over). This was frustrating enough with some twat in a van in front of us constantly letting car after car in front of us. Sometimes 5 & 6 at a time. I was not happy to say the least. I changed lanes to get by him, which wasn’t hard as he was still letting cars in, only to notice he had a clipboard ... read more

So, I am in Budapest after getting a lovely 'bus' (car) from Cluj. I am staying in Pest (the east of side of the river) in a huge hostel in district VIII. This morning I went along to the Grand Synagogue on Dohany Street. The synagogue is one of the largest in the world, and quite different in style to other synagogues. It looks like a catholic cathedral. Which wasn't an accident. The synagogue was built by the Neolog Jews who were trying to show how integrated they were in Hungarian society. Hungary has always been (comparative to other European states) more accepting of Jewish people. Dohany Street Synagogue was designed by a (non-Jewish) Viennese architect and was built in the Moorish Revival style (based on buildings like Alhambra in Spain), and from the outside this ... read more

Jouduin hetken etsimaan oikeaa paikkaa josta ostin vuorokauden lipun paikallisliikenteeseen. Menin metrolla rautatieasemalle - yksi vaihto. Siella pitikin jonottaa puolisen tuntia (vuoronumerolla), ennen kuin sai ostettua junalipun Bratislavaan. Lisaksi lippu on avoin, eli kay kuukauden aikana mihin tahansa junaan. Ajelin ratikoilla pitkin kaupunkia, ensin poikkesin kahvilla, sitten joen yli. Olisin mennyt jokiristeilylle, mutta vuorokauden lippu ei kaynytkaan siella - paitsi ilmeisesti kavisi arkipaivisin. Menin koysiradalla Bud... read more
