On arrival at all these islands we are travelling to and from, we are met by the domatia ( room) touts. We get off the ferry, and they stand on the pier, holding up their cards announcing which hotel they are from, haggling the price with you, all trying to sell their accomodation. Up until now, we have found it fun, OK its a bit confusing.... are they telling the truth? Is the next one any better than the last? Its pot luck really, but we have had some really nice places to stay. But this time, here on PAROS, I made the mistake of accepting a flyer from one of them. Why? I have no idea, I just took it from him - fatal mistake. Not only did this guy look like a complete muppet, ... read more

I didn't know what to expect attending a school in Greece. Well, it wasn't much of a school, more like a small art program. Only 30 students attend this school in one semester; no more than 10 students per class. They offered a variety of art class but also, Greek Mythology, Women Studies and Philosophy. The professors were all laid back, didn't believe much in exams or writing papers; as long as we attended class we were learning. The first week we got acclimated to our living situation before classes started. We located the nearest grocery store, beach and night club. Our professors even came out with us to make sure that we were all safe, and to enjoy themselves too of course. As a history lesson our program traveled every weekend to either a town ... read more

I decided that after a terrible break-up with my high school sweetheart it was time to get out of Grand Rapids, Michigan for a little while and study abroad. I had many countries to choose from but for some reason Greece stuck out to me. Three months later I was laying on a beach, soaking up the Aegean sun. This trip jump started my urge to explore the world and I have no one else to thank but my high school sweetheart.... read more

Getting up at 6am (which is really 4am in UK time) was rather painful, especially when you’ve had a bad night’s sleep as awake up on the hour, every hour worried that you’ll sleep through the alarm and miss the ferry! Despite being informed by the hotel reception lady that we were ’3 mins walk’ from the E7 gate of the port that we needed to get to, our walk took quite a bit longer and was via a super busy road filled with lots of cars and lots of whistle-blowing traffic police. Pireaus port was total madness with lots of cars, lots of foot passengers and lots of confusion. We found/guessed at our right ferry and boarded whilst avoiding the chaos of cars, lorries and motorbikes that seem pretty determined to run over every single ... read more

I know most of you have been anxious for me to blog, so I thank you for your patience! When all you can think of is “Is the wind up?” and “Hmmm, what size kite do I need today?” its honestly hard to find the time to sit with your computer and relax. And, what a wonderful thing it is to have this problem. Lucky for all of you, 9 days of travel in Greece could give you a long novel of a blog and tons of pix... we’ll see. Let’s start from the beginning. I arrived in Athens on the 3rd of June with a lovely case of jetlag and entirely too much luggage for one person to carry. When I got off the plane unfortunately all of the buses and metro trains to the ... read more

From Mykonos the Flying Cat 4 takes fifty minutes to get us to Paros, the third and final island of our trip. Compared to our arrival at Mykonos two days ago, things at Paros are pretty low key. There’s no crowds on the port, and by the time the ferry is pulling away we look around to realise that we’re the only people still about. Best be on our way then. A short walk gets us to our hotel and as we check in the friendly clerk hands a hand drawn map and points out the key sites to see as well as the best local restaurants and cafes. After dumping our bags in our room, and now armed with local information, we head off on a walking tour. First up is the ‘Church with 100 ... read more

Paros is a beautiful small fishing island. It has quaint cobbled streets that can be explored in a just a few hours. On arrival we were greeted by a lovel host at Pension Demitrios. We stayed in a lovely Pension (which is like a cross between a hostel, B&B and a small hotel...... After another guided tour of the island it was out to Dinner where Jen ate Tims choice of the fresh fish of the day which was served whole with eyeballs and all ahhhh! A quick word about Timmy boy... He is our guide-friend on this tour and he is the most amazing and nicest mate ever! And he is hilarious... watch this space for pictures... he also has an obsession with body parts hehe... So anyway Paros was so lovely and the town ... read more

I am a beach. The individual grains of sand are not unique and do not have a voice of their own. Do not mistake me, I am happy to have them, as I am happy to have the stones, sea life and trees. They all listen intently to my words, but without a voice, all they offer in return is a living burqua to cover my nakedness. The wind tonight is acting like an amourous man, desperately trying to blow my cover away for a glimpe of my naked being. I am wise to the wind, but must admit I do entice him occassionaly to cool me in the heat or to bring wave after wave to wash me when I have been soiled upon by a disprespectful dog or drunken human. Tonight the wind has ... read more

Not joking. I'm firing myself as our travel agent. Got up at 3am. Took a taxi to the Lisboa airport, a plane to Munich, a plane to Athens, a rushed taxi ride to Piraeus, a 5-hour ferry ride in economy to Paros, waited an hour for a bus to Punda because it was too windy for the normal passenger ferry, which then took us to the car ferry to Antiparos. We arrived after Midnight, trying to find our hotel (it was one we'd not stayed at before). In bed by 1am. There are no pictures from this day. (I have to explain, the were no seats left on the ferry when we booked it in July so we got stuck with Economy, which means you have to sit outside--if you can find a seat--with a million ... read more
