Monday was our last day in Athens. We went to a couple Greek Orthodox churches. The first one that we went to was amazing. Everything was so intricate. There were so many icons, just like all the other Orthodox churches we have went to, and after today, we have been to a lot. So these ones in Athens weren’t nearly as gorgeous as the ones in Meteora. But anyways, then we went to another church in Athens, but it was closed, so we didn’t get to go in. Then, the rest of the day we had on our own. Some of us went back to the Syntagma area and went shopping. That was lots of fun. We tried to go shopping the day before, but since it was Sunday, nothing was open. There were some stores ... read more

I was on a quest, for what I wasn’t sure. One of the wise turtles I had met in Meteora had mentioned that there was a famous oracle to the south and that I may find my answers there. The turtle had told me that the ‘southern’ oracle was thousands of miles to the south, which seemed very far until I realized that I was talking to a turtle - Turtles are notorious for over-estimating distances! I consulted a map and, sure enough, the turtle had been wrong. It looked like a very short distance to the oracle, a comfortable daylong bus journey, so I decided to take his advice. There were no luck-dragons available in Kalambaka, so I settled on a southbound bus instead. Southward I went into the unknown. I left the mysterious pinnacles ... read more

Thiva to Delphiurl='/Videos/4282.html' onclick='dialog("/Videos/4282.html?popped=1","tbvideo",600,600);return false;'Delphi For economy’s sake, and just because it makes more sense, I’ve combined my experiences from four days here, starting the day after my first trip to Orchomenos. The next morning (the 6th) I got up early in the morning and went over and over the information I had on the palace of Orchomenos. There is in fact evidence of a palace near the grounds of the present Byzantine church and monastery of Panagea Skripou. But where? The accounts I had were conflicting and none of them very specific. Nonetheless, armed with this knowledge, I elected to return to Orchomenos. That is after I visited the Mycenaean tholos tombs in Thiva. The two tombs which can still be visited are in the Lofos Kasteli (known in most guidebooks and websites... read more

The plan is for Magda to take the bus to Athens with all the large pieces of luggage. Steve’s Uncle Papas came by at 6am to take Magda and the 8 pieces of luggage to the bus station in Kozani. The bus left for Athens at 8:10am. Needless to say, Xristos didn’t come by like he said he would and I didn’t wake up until 8am, which is the time we wanted to leave by. Oh well! We finished the last minute packing and got ready as quickly as we could. Oh, surprise, surprise, there is absolutely no water this morning not even outside. Alice cleaned up the house and we finally got in the car around 9am to head toward Grevena, which is as far as the highway goes. We stopped by the bakery by ... read more

On my second day in Athens, I got up early to take the three-hour bus to Delphi with Charly and Prem. Those two didn't get along so well, which I mostly just found amusing, but we all had a great time anyways. It was phenomenal to see the ancient Greek "centre of the universe", and I realized that I find sculpture so much more beautiful and inspiring when it's in the place it was originally designed for. Maybe that's the contemporary art student in me, or maybe there really is something to the idea that art has a purpose, and that purpose is in the location. Hm. Delphi is situated on the side of a huge mountain which overlooks a very deep valley and an isthmus on the coast. The hills surrounding it are quite ... read more

UntitledJames Emerson I had to do it. How can you come to greece and not see delphi, the center of the ancient world. The place where thosands, probalby millions went to get advice form the oracle of apolpo before making anykind of major descion. this one site has probably influenced the world more than anyone is aware of. How could I not go. All through university I hads heard that the place was amazing. I remember one of my proffesors saying that when you go there and see the sight, you know why people kept rebuilding the place time after time when it was destroyed by earthquaks. I prayeyed that it lived up to the hype. And still I recived further premenitions of the sights greatness while on the three hour bus ride there. I met ... read more

Day 3 (Jan 28th): Nice was saturated with clear sunshine and within five minutes of leaving the hostel I had to return and drop off my coat because I was too hot! I made my way to the promenade and stood looking at the Mediterranean. There is something about the atmosphere in Nice which makes me feel really good. It could be the clear sunshine everywhere, or maybe the sea air, or just the happy liveliness of the place. It just makes me feel content somehow. I explored the streets of Nice including the hill at the end of the beach and the marina beyond it. In the evening I went for a walk with Victoria, the russian girl, who told me that she'd spent five years studying a course in publishing and then, finding no ... read more

We left Kalambaka on the 14th and headed by long, windy, mountain bus south west to Delphi, home of the Oracle. We arrived late and found a hotel with a great view overlooking the Bay of Corinth. We went this morning to the Temples of Apollo and Athena that are on Mount Parnassos, overlooking a beautiful valley. ALOT of climbing though! Ancient Greeks were in shape :) Then it was off by Bus along the coast to Patra and our connection to Nafplia. We have decided to slow down our itinerary a bit and skip Olympus. It was a bit out of our way, and considering neither of us are Olympic Athletes (we know this judging by our climbing lately), we thought it would be best to continue to this port town of Nafplia and partake ... read more

Delphi is an archaeological site and a cute town in Greece. In ancient times it was the site of the most important oracle of the god Apollo. Delphi was once revered throughout the Greek world as the centre of the universe. Legend has it that Zeus sent off 2 owls to fly around the world and they met at Delphi - therefore marking the centre of the universe. In addition to visiting the archaeological sites - my favorite being the Temple of Athena, of course, I went to the museum which was fantastic - and another relatively long visit by my standards. I also had the best cheap accommodation of the trip to date. Great room on my own with a great view - see sunset photo. ... read more
