Ralf made the drive from Trier to Eisenach reaching speeds of up to 220 kilometers per hour which he loves to do since he is accustomed to driving on the autobahn but it still usually results in me putting my seat back, closing my eyes and trying to sleep through it all! But we reached the cute little town of Eisenach by noon to achieve the highly anticipated “Third Castle in Three Days” itinerary (well... technically fourdays but the first and third castle tours within 72 hours of each other!) For a castle loving, fairy tale dreamer Pisces girl from Minnesota, these have notably been some of the most exciting 72 hours of my life. Once again the Wartburg castle is situated on the top of a rather steep hill surrounded by woods. They obviously didn’t ... read more

I actually got going this morning and walked to the train station. If you follow my Facebook page, I had an interesting experience this morning at the Erfurt train station. I began seeing clusters of 5-10 Polizei standing around, the closer I got to the station and once inside, they were everywhere. Of course, I'd been thinking about how less than 25 years ago this was “East” Germany, and under communist rule, I was more than a bit concerned. So not having any problem asking what was going on and if I were safe, the nice officer said I would be safe for another hour or so but after that, “No.” So I asked if it were a demonstration or something and he said, “No, it's football!” Well, that makes perrrrfect sense being that it's Saturday! ... read more

My most vivid memory from this day was the young mother, with daughter in tow, who boarded the train in Bebra. I was riding the regional trains in southern Germany with my end goal being Trier on the Luxembourg border. But here were these two strangers traveling seemingly anywhere, and it occurred to me that my fellow travelers, riding that day on a fast train, would be missing this experience. I sat and watched out the window at the passing scenery, yet as often as I could I witnessed this microcosm of German family life. The little girl would talk, or her mother would feed her or read to her, or she would strike up a game in the passageway playing with whatever she could find. I was resorting to an old standby in the ... read more

Thursday, May 1st: We travelled from Bad Soden to Neuenhof today. The 200 km ride was somewhat hampered by a 10 km traffic jam caused by a combination of holiday traffic and a construction area on the autobahn. Did we mention we were chauffeured in a brand new BMW? Our hosts, the Beck's, who are old friends of my mom’s, picked us up and took us to their house in the old DDR for a couple of nights. That evening, in true German fashion, a HUGE meal of Thuringer sausage and pork chops was served, enough to feed twice as many people than those actually seated at the table. Let's not forget about the bread and beer too... The evening was somewhat marred by the fact the Bavarian team (FC Bayern-Munchen) lost to the Russians in ... read more

For the past six days, my classmates and I have gone on a whirlwind tour of everything that is Martin Luther. It was a group trip intended to complement our theology/history class: Luther and Bach. Our schedule looked like this: Feb 26- Reutlingen to Erfurt Feb 27- Erfurt to Eisenach to Wittenberg Feb 28- Wittenberg Feb 29- Wittenberg to Leipzig Mar 1- Leipzig Mar 2- Leipzig to Reutlingen The trip went better than I had expected. The group from VU that was in Germany last semester had warned us that the trip was boring and some of them even snuck off to Prague! Between our required visits to churches and museums as well as going on runs, eat out for long meals, and shopping the time filled with no problems. Some of the highlights of Erfurt ... read more
