Today we got really lost - again. So instead of spending the night in Heidelberg we are staying in a camping ground near Koblenz, near the castle Burg-Pflez. We started the day pretty well and managed to find our way across Koln to the Dom, with crossing the river only three times. The Dom is a massive cathedral and covers 12,470 square metres. The two spires are 157m high - and yes, we climbed it - all 509 steps. I know, by now some of you will have fallen off your chairs in shock to think that I, Monique, actually climbed that many stairs - but I have photographic evidence that I did it! Anyway, part way up the stairs you can have a breather (since the stair case is so narrow and stuffy) and see ... read more

Hello! I've joined together Germany and Switzerland for this blog as we're running out of time to write them! We left Amsterdam on a day train so that we could see the view and because it wasn't quite as far to our next destination, Koblenz in Germany. We were trying to get to the black forest and there isn't an easy route across so we decided that a stop off in Koblenz by the River Rhine would be nice. Koblenz In Koblenz we had a little look round with our bags trying to find the youth hostel (which is on a hilltop in a fortress accessed in summer by seat lift) - we were actually trying to find the ferry across the river to save us a 1.5km walk but shall we say that signposting and ... read more

It all happened faster than the eye could comprehend. One second Christie was behind me, the next she was on the ground. The thing was, I caused it and that wasn't so good. Before today we'd only had one puncture, now we'd had a puncture and crash ... things were looking up! Christie had decided this morning that I go to slow (hard ot argue with given an everage spped of around 17kms an hour) and that I'm always stopping (also hard to argue with because I like taking photos) so she decided to go ahead a bit today. The section of cycleway form Bacharach to Koblenz was exceptional, flat, right on the Rhine, castles everywhere ... just magnificent. Monday 9th June A fair journey on the bus, arrived Koblenz in a beautiful 30/32 degrees which was much appreciated. Tents quickly up on a pitch with a beautiful view onto the river, the castle and the famous statue. Realised hadn’t quite put the tents up right, so a quick change of poles to the OUTSIDE of the tents! Took some time to get hold of the ‘rules’ for the site. Headed into Koblenz after dinner & meeting for a look around & some photo opps, finishing up at the statue. Long walk back round! Tuesday 10th June Boat cruise down the river Rhine. Notes were confusing and thought it was half-hour -soon found out it was 2 hours, and Gisella was meeting a friend. No-one really wanted to cruise for 2 hours, so we got ... read more

So last night was a great celebration in honor of our 5 year anniversary. We were able to spend a wonderful day visiting the Louvre and Musee Rodin. I can't believe we got to see Mona Lisa, The Thinker, and The Kiss, all on our special day! I definitely won't forget it! We left in the evening to celebrate our anniversary in Paris, and got to eat dinner at that lovely cafe that we had spent the day prior. We had a great dinner, and I had view of two of my favorites in the world: my husband and the Eiffel Tower. It was a great setting, we had great food and great conversation. We left to go see the Tower at around 7:30, even though I was worried we would miss the sunset. We made ... read more

Just returned from a really great and encouraging visit with Juliana. We ended up staying the night at her house and driving back to Koblenz, to pack up for Paris today. The time with her was very restful and very encouraging and we got to enjoy American food on a military base and she even treated us to watching the Bourne Ultimatum. (You can imagine Chet's excitement, since he's an avid reader of Robert Ludlum's books.) Jules just poured out blessings on us from the moment we got there, until the moment we left. She is very generous and selfless and the time was spent figuring out ways to help us save our money, by providing us with a "few" (AN ABUNDANCE, IF YOU WILL) American snack items for the road: American flavored chips, cookies, Starbucks ... read more

Just a very short post to tell you that we are back in Koblenz, until August 14th. Sunday, we are making a nice little day trip down to Heidelberg to see Juliana, my close friend and roommate of 3 years from college. She lives in Germany working with a youth group on a military base in Ramstein. Then, we will be heading for Paris to celebrate our anniversary and to say, "Au revoir!" to Europe. We fly home on August 19th. Chet will probably post a blog sometime today.=) K... read more

We leave tommorrow and will be gone until August 11th. We have rented a car but have not made any reservations at any hotels. This will allow us to be a little more open ended but I have put up a skeleton of a map to show our general route. This will give us the freedom to stop and go wherever we please and stay as long as we would like. We'll call it, "an adventure." We'll keep you posted as we get internet access.... read more

Today was a great day, full of rest. We woke up at 11 a.m., and were able to do a little resting, reading and even yard work with Grandma. It rained, and was a perfect day to just lay inside and read. Grandma fed us well, which is always nice upon returning from rigorous travel, to have a homecooked meal. Wednesday, we leave for our southern Germany trip. Because of the unexpected effect of the pound ($$$$)on our British Isles trip, and different licensing rules for driving among the Czech Republic and Austria, we are "changing" our destinations a little. Our trip will be down to see Bavaria, Switzerland, and some Germany. The trip will, nevertheless, be a wonderful trip, filled with many places we were hoping to see. Prague and Vienna will have to wait ... read more
