We got back from Berlin this evening around 5 pm. We came home to a home cooked meal after living on street bratwurst, various pastries, cheese plates, brochen and Nutella for the past three days. We left Berlin at about 8:30 am and the weather (which had been drizzling and cool the whole time we were there) was already in the high 80's. That is a long day in a Fiat Panda with no A/C and 90+ degrees for almost 700 km. At least there are no speed limits on the Autobahn because it almost feels like air conditioning once you get over 140 with the windows down. I do find myself however saying "huh?" a lot after 7 hours of howling winds by my ear. Who needs hearing anyway when you can't understand the ... read more

The slides of Cochem that my parents showed me as a child, did perfect justice to this town. I dreamed of these towns, never thinking I would be so blessed to someday visit them myself. As we drove up to Cochem, which is a tiny little jewel located right by the Mosel River, about 30 to 45 minutes from Koblenz, I was in astonished that this place still looked like the slides my parents shot 30 years back. Cochem had me under a spell, and I would have to say that after Brugge, Cochem is definitely a close second! Cochem is nestled down by the Mosel River, a little traditionally decorated German (tourist) town, but nevertheless, a darling, charming little town. It was a bright sunny day and I felt that we were able to ... read more

UntitledCheston & Katherine HerveyTomorrow morning we leave for The Netherlands and Belgium. We will be staying in Volendam (just north of Amsterdam) for two nights before making our way down the coast to Voorschaten (just north of Rotterdam) for one night. From there we will head down into Belgium for three days; Brugges, Brussels and Antwerp before heading back to Koblenz. Click Here for our route. If you zoom out you can see the red line that marks our loose itenerary. After sleeping til almost noon today (we did stay up until 1 am watching the Princess Diana Concert with Yola) and napping for an hour in the middle of the day, we are pretty much adjusted to the time difference. It was difficult considering that the sun doesn't go dow... read more

Well we have arrived in Germany. When we boarded the discount airline at LAX and it was about 100 degrees inside the plane we began to realize why it is a "discount" airline...turns out it was becasue they only had one engine on. The flight didn't seem too long but Kat only slept about 2 hours and I got about 1 hour. Grandma Yola picked us up yesterday in Dusseldorf at 11:30 am and we made the 90 minute drive southwestish to Koblenz. The weather is very overcast and humid but pretty warm. Katherine lasted about 5 minutes once we got to Yola's before she fell asleep. I joined her 10 minutes later. After about 2 hours we woke and had a wonderful meal of Gulasch followed by a dessert that looked like yogurt, smelled ... read more

Chet summed everything perfectly, so all I need to add is that this trip is going to be a great chance to perfect our ever so American-German. I had been listening infrequently to German cd's, to learn how to get us around, and to try to impress my husband a little bit. I will admit that I was so proud of myself as I boarded that airplane, that the moment one of the stewardesses said something so simple as, "Gutentag," as we boarded, my vocabulary was minimized to, "Er, hello," said in a German accent. It's funny, how once you are immersed in the culture, you suddenly have lost everything you have prepared yourself for. It was like I had encountered stage fright. My second chance was when in the air, the stewardesses came for ... read more

Cycling from Holland to Germany it felt as if we were back in the rolling Kent countryside again - and yes we did feel those extra acquistions on the hills! We arrived in Aachen early and met a couple of other cycle tourists in the campground. Like many other cycle tourists we have met, they were up and out of the campsite before we had even put our heads out of the tent the next morning. There is some logic in this, it means you have covered considerable ground before the sun gets high and hot in the sky. Somehow this logic has not filtered down to us, and we still enjoy long and slow starts over large breakfast bowls and morning showers before a mid morning departure! Leaving Aachen the push was then on to ... read more

Day 18, 18th June. Wesserling - Bonn - Remagen A bit Queezy!!! I was up all night with the worse sickness and diarrhea I’ve ever had. I didn’t realize my body could contain so much puke, yuch! Rory helped me out and stood in some of my vomit in the process. It must have been some sort of food poisoning. At 10.30 we set off, I felt weak, but we found the Rhein and continued to Bonn where the guys got their bikes fixed and other bits added too… Toby became one of the ‘Brookes squad’ and then his front pannier rack broke! At Remagen we stocked up on food, after only about 30 miles I was weak, we decided to camp on the site there. It was raining as I pitched tent at 5pm. I ... read more

We left France and travelled via train into Luxembourg and then to the township of Cochem in Germany, on the Mosel River. Cochem is like something out of a picture post card - a small medieval town in a lush green valley with a river flowing through the middle, a castle overlooking the town and surrounded by vineyards. We spent the afternoon walking along the Mosel river and then up the hill to the castle. A after overnighting in a B&B, breakfast was had in a large room (with a very large glass window) overlooking the street and view of the river and the town. Mid morning we took the train along the Mosel River and onto Koblenz, on the junction of the Mosel and Rhine rivers. Outside our hotel room there was a street procession ... read more

Hello everyone, We started our two weeks aboard the Merlijn last Saturday. There are twenty of us along with four crew members on the barge, Gunther our bike mechanicvan driver and Peter, a rather abrasive little German who is our guide. We cycle 35-40 km. per day along the shore of the Rhine through pretty little towns, orchards and vineyards. This area is know for Reisling Wine and they say that the grapes grown on hillsides are the best for this wine. I don't know how they harvest the grapes--some of these slopes have got to be sixty degree angles. The rest of the time is spent in lectures, museum visits and walking tours. We started in the town of Mainz, one of the oldest in Germany. We have learned that so many structures built bý ... read more
