Woke up late to a lovely sunny hot morning.. no driving needed so we could relax and do some serious sight seeing!! Sam had already decided he wanted to go to the Chocolate museum and I wanted to visit the cathedral. Neither were disappointing. Had a lovely walk along the Rhine and stopped for a coffee and some people watching too. The chocolate museam is a great place for kids - it gives the history of chocolate coming to Europe as well as a factory to see the various stages of making chocolates. The taste from the chocolate fountain was good and the whole place smelt lovely. Hotel is OK - only about 20 minutes from the city so we have walked for miles today. Both exhausted and are now chilling in the hotel. For tomorrow's ... read more

That was a loooong drive! After leaving the hotel in Ypres we decided to drive around and have a look at some of the cemetries so we lost track of where we were... The cemetries we visited were smaller than we expected and much smaller than the ones I have seen on the TV. Though small they were still hard hitting and sad. There were many just for "a soldier" as the identity was not known so it is lovely that they have a grave. Interesting and I hope will bring history to life for Sam as he learns about it in school. The journey didn't start well - mostly because we didn't know where we were! We saw lots of small rural Belgian villages - interesting at first but frustrating - I kept telling Sam ... read more

The sun came out tonight as we left Cologne after an interesting explore of some of the sights the city has to offer. The day didn’t start this way. We woke to the sound of cars driving along wet roads and it stayed like that until we were ready to walk to the local railway station. We had a lucky break as we headed for the train only to get the heaviest downpour of the day just as we were approaching the station. The city of Cologne was looking damp and not at its best but the wet weather certainly didn’t discourage the locals and tourists from enjoying a day out in the city. With a break in the weather we wandered over the railway bridge that crosses the Rhine. Along the entire length of the ... read more

No surprises this morning when a quick look out the hotel window confirmed the customary heavy cloud and intermittent rain were with us again. That helped confirm our decision to take motorways from Kassel to Cologne rather than drive the smaller country roads. In addition, our map showed a veritable labyrinth of autobahns and minor roads curling and criss-crossing around the cluster of cities that surround Cologne, so with no hesitation we turned on the GPS and set off. The motorways were very busy and it was quite noticeable from the registration plates that a vast number of Dutch people must have headed south for the summer and were now returning home. We wondered who’s left in the Netherlands. Just over two and a half uneventful hours later we drew up at our hotel on the ... read more

Day 008, Saturday June 25 This is a big one, covering a lot of time, so try and keep up :) I write this on the 5 hour train ride from Cologne to Berlin, we have been going non stop! It literally feels like we’ve done a weeks worth in mere days. The crowds don’t end, like London and Bruges, Amsterdam and Cologne are insane tourist hubs, I think I should start expecting massive crowds in almost every city we go to, then I’ll stop being shocked each time I step put of the main train station to find myself overwhelmed by the massive amounts of people occupying the main city center. We arrived in Amsterdam late Thursday night, we immediately went grocery shopping, which included uncooked pasta noodles, and tomato sauce, first thing we did ... read more

Here are the pictures from the day of the Cologne Cathedral tour/Excavation Tour. Looking back on these now I recognize the vast majority of them suck, so I am vowing to go back before I leave to do a better job. This will give a general idea as to what it is like. I'm also not in any of them, because by the time the Excavation Tour ended it was a torrential downpour. ... read more

Our trip back to the Czech Republic started in a van with 6 Asian kids (Sharon says I should call them young adults), all apparently malnourished. From Vienna Westbahnhoff to the outskirts they ate about three sausages each, some rolls, hepas of lollies and one guy finished off with a boiled egg with soy sauce. Then, as all Asians seem to do in any moving vehicle, they promptly fell asleep for the rest of the trip. Cesky Krumlov was our first destination, a fairy tale type of village with the requisite old town, pretty river curving around it and of course the castle overseeing it all. Into this framework has to be fitted thousands of restaurants, souvenir shops and museums. Actually we had a great time, climbing up to the Castle Tower, having a really good ... read more

On Friday I spent most of the day traveling on trains. I stopped at Lake Constance for a few hours to walk around and take a ferry across the lake before I got back on another train to head to Stuttgart. I arrived in Stuttgart Friday night but didn't hav much time to do anything in the city after getting settled into my hostel. Saturday morning I had some time to walk around. It's a pretty neat city. There was a viewing platform 10 stories high at the train station that allowed me to take some nice pictures of the city. I then took a train to Cologne (Köln). It was supposed to be a 2 hour and 15 minute train ride on a high speed train, but it ended up taking over 4 hours because ... read more
